Poor visit/observations at DLR after a year

Well it's been a year since I've been to DLR and we recently decided to renew our annual passes and went to DLR Thursday-Saturday April 25-27.
Here are some observations that I've noticed in the past year since I've been gone.
There were 16,000 high school students there for an international DECA conference, add in the 1,000+ high school students there for Music in the Parks and Heritage Festivals that I know take place there that weekends (and the music t-shirts we saw) that's a lot of kids but oh well.
They screwed up our booking at Paradise Pier Hotel and we didn't get the appropriate discount, they said since we booked it there wasn't anything we could do. We are talking about a couple hundred dollar discount too.

We were on a floor with said high school students (I am not teaching this year so I am on a break from high school students) at 1:30am they were running the halls, yelling, laughing, knocking on their friends door which was across the hall from mine so we could hear it yelling housekeeping in a high pitched voice. So I finally went out there and yelled at them. I didn't cuss but used my high school teacher voice. I didn't hear from them the rest of the night. I reported them to security to notify their director/teacher when I take a trip 10pm is the curfew and parents and I take 2 hour shifts patrolling the hallways to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen. No idea what their teacher was up to. When I reported them I found out I wasn't the only person reporting them.

Our Glow with the Show ears only worked for one day then stopped working. I couldn't find our receipt (honestly if I kept a receipt for everything I bought at DLR I would need a separate backpack for that). So they said the only thing they could do would be switch the batteries which they did and it didn't work. Mine wouldn't turn on at all and my sons just glowed a dim red in each ear (so dim you couldn't see it except in total darkness and even then it was dim). I was pissed as that was $50 out the door.

Speaking of the Glow with the Show ears, no one was wearing any except the cast members. Both showings of World of Color we were at were crowded and seriously besides cast members maybe a handful of people were wearing them. Guess they aren't as popular as they had hoped, especially if they only work one day.

We ate at the Carthay Circle Theater Restaurant for the first time. I have mixed reviews about it. First off I have major food allergies, I'm anaphelactic, I can't have anything with nuts, almonds, walnuts, peanut butter etc, no fish any type of fish, no mushrooms and no olives. My son is also autistic and I don't want to make him sound like a brat because he isn't but he is picky about what he eats and even if it is something he does like to eat if it doesn't look the same he won't eat it. It took us a while just to get him to eat the mac and cheese at Ariels' because it came is shells as opposed to long straight noodles like in east mac.
Anyways first off the ambiance was nice. The place is gorgeous and beautiful and very fancy, I felt underdressed in shorts and a t-shirt.
We managed to manipulate things enough for my son and my hubby will eat anything. The only thing I could have was a the rib-eye (the most expensive thing of course) and they had to hold the sauce/gravy due to the mushrooms and zinfidel. Well my rib-eye was RAW and I mean RAW I had asked medium well done. PLus about 30% of it was nothing but grizzle/fat as in non edible. They took it back and brought it back and it was still raw, only the two bites I had cut off were done right, still the grizzle was still there, we tried again and it came back the same way. I said I was done the third time. They were nice enough to take it off the bill and still allow us our world of color tickets. My husband had something that I forget (I think it was lamb and chicken or something) but said there was very little meat and he was still hungry. So nice setting but horrible food and we won't be returning.

OK world of Color we sit in the premier Carthay Cirlce seating in the handicapped section because of my sons autism he can't be in a crowd so this allows him space should he need to walk around or make a quick exit. They ask us to stand since we are physically capable of doing so and reserve the benches for those who can't sit. No problem I totally understand. So we stood behind the benches. However we couldn't see the show. I seriously don't ever remember having this problem before. But my son could barely see over the people seated on the bench in front of us (normally the area we sit in isn't that crowded so we often sit on the benches.) PLus the crowd in front were all standing (why can't they make them sit like fireworks or fantasmic?) PLUS in the crowd had several people with kids on their shoulders!!!! NOw not even my husband nor I could see. There was a small seat on the bench where just my son could sit or even stand. I talked to the cast member and complained to him that we couldn't see and he kind of shrugged his shoulders saying there wasn't much he could do that seating was first come first serve which I totally understand so I asked if they could make the people take the kid off their shoulders so others behind them could see to which he said no they can't ask that. Seriously??? So those beinhd them those handicapped just can't see, even after appending the money we did for dinner??? I asked if my son could stand on the bench he said no because it is a safety hazard, and I said well isn't it a safety hazrd for a child to be on their parents shoulders. He again smiled and shrugged his shoulders. They claimed with our park view room at Paradise pier that we could see it from there and the TV channel plays the music. well we could see the back of it, the projections weren't clear at all and we couldn't see the water effects in front of the screen because we were seeing the back of the water screen.

Now World of Color, when are they planning on a refurb and redoing of the park area where people watch from? The projections on the water screens the cartoons and that are looking really blurry to me, my husband and person standing next to us commented on it too.
Plus those water half globe things that come out of the water and display things on it still aren't coming out of the water.
I'm still also waiting for a CD on the music of World of Color. BUT WOC needs a refurb....badly.

Radiator Spring Racers is still having the breakdown problems as from when it first opened. Remember my rant when we first went on it how we had to come back 3 hours later only to have it break down right as we were about to enter the car? Well guess what I kid you not same thing happened except we didn't have to wait 3 hours, it was early morning entry but right as we were about to get into the car it broke down. The power cut out. They have to everyone off of the ride. Reset and power each car back on separately, and each track section back up separately and it is a mile and a half track and then cycle through all the cars. 45 minutes later we were on the ride. That's how we spent our early morning entry. A former student of mine is a ride operator lead on that ride and she says it breaks down anywhere from 10-20 times in a three day period, not good.

I have been dying to ride in the front section of the monorail for years. OUr second magic morning entry after the first train went off we were first in line for the next monorail train and I asked to ride in the front section and he said if it was avaialbe we could, and I thought no problem because the park just opened. Well it turns out someone was in there from inside the park and they selfishly decided to ride in the front back to the park. Seriously they couldn't just switch sections since they already got to ride? They should seriously think about making people have a one way ride only to make it fair.

I know this sounds really negative and I'm sorry but I love DLR and that's why I hate to see things so bad.

The Iron man exhibit at Innoventions was great and they had things very well organized in terms of letting so many people in and out of the exhibit. That was a good thing to see.
Space Mountain was still closed with no explanation, not even to cast members.

Everything else was positive.

Sorry if this sounds like a negative rant I didn't intend for it to. I just hold DLR in higher regards.

THanks for listening.

anyone else noticing the problem with the glow with the show ears? World of Color?

anyone else noticing the problem with the glow with the show ears? World of Color?

I'm sorry to hear that your Glow with the Show ears were having problems. The two pairs that I bought were working fine, but I did notice that not many people wear them. I thought they were neat, but I don't wear mine either because they were heavy and the battery pack in the top made it fit badly. I would try replacing the batteries (again) on all of the pairs that were having problems with brand new batteries (I don't know if the batteries the CM tried were fresh out of the manufacture's packaging, but they might have been partially used otherwise).

The batteries on the ears are only good for 8 hours. Also, even if you turn them off they seem to draw power. After running through a ton of batteries, I now take the batteries out when not in use.

Also, the first time I replaced the batteries, the ears didn't work. I took them back to Disney, and they tried new batteries and they worked fine. My friend tried replacing only 2 of the 3 batteries on hers and they didn't work. So you may just have a bad battery.

Sounds like an extremely frustrating time.
Yikes !!!!!
Sending you hugs and Pixie Dust for better Disney memories .....

thanks guys,
after the CM tried replacing batteries that they had we also bought a new fresh package of batteries and tried changing them that way (as the batteries the CM had were in a drawer and I couldn't tell if they were new or used)
I agree about the battery pack rubbing on the top of the head and on my son it looked weird like he had an egg head
lol they do need to make them more fashionable lol

I'm sure they will come up with technology soon that addresses those concerns
but they don't appear to be as popular as Disney hoped
maybe its the price of the ears, maybe the guests don't really understand what they are and what they do
Disney isn't really pushing or advertising them well
maybe its the problems with them not working

I was there the same weekend and I noticed DLR seemed to be feeling the effects of the economy. It was less crowded than when I was there a couple months earlier but it was the first time I saw trash everywhere. A friend even stepped in gum. As I exited a ride, one cast member was asking another if they wanted to pick up some trash in the walkway. It wasn't bad compared to other parks, just surprising for DLR.. Also for the first time ever, two cast members handling rides were incredibly rude, that said, there were too many others to count who were amazing. Just not the usual Pixie Dust floating about I guess. I'm still going back in June. :)

Disney has always replaced every single electronic gizmo that has failed to perform without question. Batteries going dead after 1 or 2 nights, failing to work even with new batteries etc. Heck, one time our 5yr old dropped his Buzz lightup toy in a fountain. Disney replaced it. Another trip he dropped his toy on the ground and cracked it, Disney replaced it. We've never gotten upset and demanded Disney do anything. We've just asked nicely and they've always just handed us another toy.

they said since we booked it there wasn't anything we could do

What does that mean? If you booked with a discount, what happened to the discount?

why can't they make them sit like fireworks or fantasmic?)

They make people stand on Main Street for fireworks. I've only seen sitting be allowed back near small world. On Main Street it would be a horrible fire hazard.

We sat for an hour to WAIT for Fantasmic, but then they made us stand for it.

And how would you even be able to see WOC if people sat? There are hedges and fences between each section, and I wouldn't be able to see much over them (I can barely see anyway since I'm short).

RSR goes down when something goes onto the track, for one of the reasons. It's hard for them to control that, since they haven't gone to Universal's level of not bringing many things on. So someone has a baseball hat on and it blows off, ride stop. Someone tries to take a "selfie", their phone falls out of their hands and onto the track, ride stop. It's not all the fault of the ride or under their control.

I'm astonished that a school group had the funds to stay at PPH! When my sister was there for a cheer thing, they stayed at the $99 Ramada Plaza.

Glad I read your post, because I won't be bringing my 2 autistic boys to WOC. I don't think they would enjoy it at all. We are opting for the Fantasmic Dessert Package when we go in July. I think I may just go to WOC on my own while the kids are asleep back at the hotel with my DH. Sorry about your steak, you should have had it cooked the way you want, although I think steak is better medium-rare.

DH. Sorry about your steak, you should have had it cooked the way you want, although I think steak is better medium-rare.
The chef may have been thinking the same thing, because that's how steak is to be served... you can also always cook the steak more, but you can't uncook it once its been taken over... redos they probably tend to be overly careful with as the patron was already unhappy with it.

What does that mean? If you booked with a discount, what happened to the discount?.

I'm wondering the same thing. If you booked, then you had a CONFIRMATION emailed to you with the rate you booked. NO hotel is going to deny that emailed confirmation.

I've had lanyard pouches replaced that were a year old, so try another cast member on the ears. We haven't purchased any because we noticed no one else has them.

We also had a disappointing WoC viewing experience. The viewing area is so poorly designed. But we had the fortunate opportunity to stay in the Grand Californian Villas a couple months ago and watched from our balcony every night! The kids loved it so much they didn't mind leaving the parks so we could be back in time to watch it! That's the only way to go from now on. If you don't get a PP view room, they have a viewing deck on the 6th floor.

Glad I read your post, because I won't be bringing my 2 autistic boys to WOC. I don't think they would enjoy it at all.

We've done WOC twice with our DS (7) who is autistic and he has LOVED it both times. We did dinner at WCT and got to the WOC area early to grab good spots. Our son brings his nintendo DS to play and he has no problem at all waiting for the show.

If you check out the WOC Superthread found HERE and look at the image of the viewing section, we sat in the Reserved Viewing section just above the red WET section. We grabbed a spot right against the railing so no one would sit in front of DS and we sat around him so he didn't feel crowded.

Now, this might not work for you and your boys, but there are ways to make it enjoyable!

They screwed up our booking at Paradise Pier Hotel and we didn't get the appropriate discount, they said since we booked it there wasn't anything we could do. We are talking about a couple hundred dollar discount too.
What discount did you book? Did you have an email showing the discount? I've never had them not honor a discount.

Wow, I am so sorry. I have a lot of "foodie" friends, and they all love the place. We are thinking of going on our June trip.

PLus the crowd in front were all standing (why can't they make them sit like fireworks or fantasmic?) PLUS in the crowd had several people with kids on their shoulders!!!!
There is no seating area for fireworks, except in side areas of the park, such as Small World. As for Fantasmic!, the areas down by the water are seated areas, but the rest of the areas are standing. The way WOC is set up, there is no way to do seated areas. I personally do not like the handicap seating areas. We usually take the standard WOC dining area, since it is much less crowded than the regular areas, and my kids (1 Autistic, 1 claustrophobic) simply space themselves out on the front rail and it works great.

Kids on the shoulders have always been a problem. Disney tried stopping it in the beginning, but it became an unsafe issue for the CMs to deal with. Imagine a college student, female, trying to tell some big dad he can't put his kid on their shoulders. It was a bad scene. Heck, I have had dads verbally assault me simply because I ask them to take their kids off their shoulders during fireworks.

45 minutes later we were on the ride. That's how we spent our early morning entry. A former student of mine is a ride operator lead on that ride and she says it breaks down anywhere from 10-20 times in a three day period, not good.
Yes, any time someone loses a hat, jacket (yes people hold jackets over their heads and lose them), glasses, phones, cameras, etc... they have to stop the ride. If the item ends up in the slot, the ride will be reset, but they have it down to where it usually only takes 10 - 15 mins to reset.

I have been dying to ride in the front section of the monorail for years. OUr second magic morning entry after the first train went off we were first in line for the next monorail train and I asked to ride in the front section and he said if it was avaialbe we could, and I thought no problem because the park just opened. Seriously they couldn't just switch sections since they already got to ride? They should seriously think about making people have a one way ride only to make it fair.
Totally disagree. If you wanted to ride so badly, why didn't you simply ask for the next train? It would have meant waiting 5-10 mins. It is very rare to be able to ride from the DTD station. If you wanted it this badly, why not get in line and wait at the Disneyland Tomorrowland Station?

Space Mountain was still closed with no explanation, not even to cast members.
Cast Members would tell you they don't know, even if they did know. I think everyone following the reports know they were fixing railings.

I sympathize with you. I had a bad trip a couple of weeks ago. However it wasn't Disneys fault, it was my sister and brother-in-laws. I'm not going to tell you to "get over it" but I'm surprised by some of the things that Disney did/didn't do. It sounds very "undisney". I would write a letter to the company outlining what happened. It can't hurt. I have yet to do WOC because I hate standing and waiting for that long. I always say "next time". I'm 62 and in pretty good shape, but standing in one spot for more than 20 minutes is pretty uncomfortable for me. I have 5 autistic grandkids of varying degrees. As they get older I am thinking about giving WOC a try. I'm going with my 2 ten year old grand daughters Tuesday and may try it.

Can't imagine why you need a receipt to replace your ears....I mean, where else would you have bought them?:confused3

But it was fair already. You're allowed to ride round-trip from Tomorrowland without getting off the monorail. That's why you were told "if it's available" when you asked the CM if you could ride up front instead of the CM guaranteeing that you could fit on the next train. You might have had a better experience if you had waited for the next train.

In March, we waited three trains until we could ride into the park from DTD on a busy evening. When an empty nosecone finally arrived, a very self-entitled couple with a stroller who had just arrived behind us argued with the CMs that because we were there first, they and their baby wouldn't all fit in the front with us. Then they got annoyed that their stroller couldn't be brought up front. Then they asked if there was somewhere to "check their stroller" onboard. (I *swear*.) The CMs had none of it, the wife was told to ride with the stroller in the main cabin, and the dad sat with his child in the back of the nosecone. We sat right up front because we were there first. I'm sure the couple complained about the situation after they got off the monorail. But our situation was fair, too, and they could have waited for another train.

A lack of patience on a crowded day at DLR never creates more happiness. That's just the way it goes.

First, I'm very sorry that you had a rough trip. I go often and some days are definitely not up to par with others. I think a few things can be dealt with though...

1 On your hotel rate, if you have a confirmation with the correct amount on it, call Disney back and persist with managers if necessary to get the money refunded. I've never known Disney to not make it right, especially when you have proof. If you meant that you didn't notice the price when you got your confirmation, I sympathize as it happens to the best of us.

2 I have similar advice on the ears. Go into one of the stores on Main Street that carry them (I imagine both the Emporium and the hat place across do) and explain to the cm what happened. If he or she doesn't replace them, ask to talk to a manager and explain. Disney has totally replaced things for me, past the 30 days, just because it was broken--without yelling or crying or even losing my cool, so they weren't just trying to get me out of there. :-) Persist and let them know that it matters to you. I have total faith they will fix it for you.

3 On the seating for World of Color, I definitely agree to skip the dining package and just pull a fast pass. Then it's really all about when you show up. Line up before they let people in and grab a spot on the rail for DS. You and DH can sit on either side to give him buffer. Use a blanket or sweatshirts to give yourself some space. Once you've got a spot, send someone over to Boardwalk Pizza where they will package up your pizza to stay warm for the walk over (Once your in the reserved area, a CM will give you back a FP so you can come and go freely if you need to use the restroom or fetch treats or take your son away from the crowds until just before it begins). Or if you want to try the handicapped section, ask if just your son can sit and you can stand behind him. Unless I'm remembering wrong, they allow ecv's and wheelchairs in that area, so it's not like DS would be taking a seat from someone with no alternative.

As for the rest of WOC, I've seen it a couple of times in the last few months, once just a few weeks ago. I didn't notice the projection problems. I wonder if there was some malfunction or steam/fog/weather issue that night.

Kids on the shoulders is definitely annoying and I respect that by holding my 4 year old giant when I'm alone with him and have to hold him up a whole show. Feel the burn. :-) I think if Disney doesn't tell people not to climb on something they built, it becomes a liability thing about how they intended it to be used etc. Dad shoulders not so much. California, land of frivolous lawsuits, and really stupid precautions to prevent them.

It seems like the rest of your concerns were more about guests than Disney... kids noisy in the hallways at unreasonable times (I am the opposite and loathe the people who yell back and forth to meet up with their party at the elevator at 6am) and the people who stayed on the monorail. I'm glad the kids at least stopped when you asked and I would definitely ask a CM and queue up for the next monorail for the front next time.

And I'm sorry your dining experience was rough. I imagine being allergic to nuts, mushrooms and olives, most fancier places are rough for you with sauces etc. Hopefully you had good food elsewhere on your visit. That raw steak ordeal was definitely out of control.

We ate at the Carthay Circle Theater Restaurant for the first time.

It amazes me that they couldn't cook the steak right. They must have thought medium rare, not medium well. For a pricey restaurant that is inexcusable, your steak should literally be perfect!

A proper ribeye is very fatty and the 30% sounds about right, but again sounds like you didn't get the best cut of the bunch as it shouldn't taste like you described.

I'm curious about the hotel discount issue, as well. Did you book through Disney or a travel agency? If through an agency (even Expedia, Priceline, etc), it may be a discounted block that is governed by the agency and not Disney. Happens with rental cars all the time. The important thing is to book directly with the provider, so the customer becomes the primary agent and not someone else.

The other part I zeroed in was the receipt issue for the mouse ears. When we go to Disney (either of them), we generally save all of our receipts until a week (or more) after our trip. We collect them in one place to reconcile the bill afterwards (since we generally charge to the room), and they are usually folded in a neat stack or in an envelope out of the way until we are sure we don't need them. This includes food receipts (drink cart, restaurants, etc), too. Just a good practice to have. If you are a local, not sure how you want to handle it, as the dynamics are different.

Just to put it out there, life at Fantasmic is not rainbows and unicorns; rather, it is a full contact sport. People are generally rude and will push in front, force you over, and even sit on your blanket in the section that sits on the ground. The shows are fun, but people suck. ;)
