We have two lakes in the neighboorhood and ducks live around the lake. DH went out riding his bike in the neighborhood today. He came home and said there were some ducklings stuck in a storm drain and mama duck was up on the street quacking in despair. We both went back to see what we could do.

We managed to get mama duck and two babies who were on the street relocated to a safe place. We had to get a neighbor to move his truck off the cover to the drain so we could access it. We removed the cover and looked in. There was a PILE of ducklings down in the drain. DH jumped down in there and he handed up a handful of little ducklings to me - about 5 of them. Such tiny little fluffy things. Then a second handful - about another 5 of them. They were so little I could hold all 5 of them in my two hands. Mama duck had about 12 babies and 10 of them fell down a storm drain.

All are safe and reunited with mama. YAY!!!

You guys are awesome! Donald and Daisy thank you! ;)

Yay! Good job to you and your DH for going down there and rescuing them! Glad to hear that they all got out safely! :goodvibes

That was so nice of you!

My sister and I are huge animal lovers, my sister has actually been known to pick up a few stray dogs and find homes for them. I wish I could do the same but we have a dog here who is very territorial... not a good mix.

We have a duck pond a street away and there are signs everywhere that we should not handle the ducklings. When I was young, my classmates told me that touching the ducklings means their mother will abandon them. Tell me it's not true!

Wow, I love stories like this!!!! And, FWIW, many thanks to you & your wonderful family for your effort in reuniting Momma & babies!!!

:dance3::yay::woohoo::woohoo::worship::worship:

awwww I needed this today. Thanks for saving the duckies and getting them back to mama duck! I was scared to open the thread for fear I'd be reading a sad story. Glad it is a happy ending, you have some good karma coming your way!:goodvibes:grouphug:

OH My, you all are the DUCK HEROES!!!!!
You both deserve BIG hugs, but I think I would have freaked if my own dh jumped in there, OMG, seriously, would have freaked out....
THANKS for saving those little darlings....

That is an amazing story with a great ending! Regardless of the species, a mother is a mother and she must've felt so helpless! You guys are true heroes!

Awww, that's my feel good story for today. It's so nice to know that people still do have a heart. Thank you for being so kind. :thumbsup2

I sure hope not. There is no way we could just leave them down there. At least immediately, mama seemed to take them fine. She and the two babies that were not down the drain had gone under a bush. When I put the rescued babies in the grass by the bush, she came out and herded them under the bush with her. When we left, all of them were with mama.

Ducks do not abandoned it's chick if they're handled by humans. It's a myth, but a good one to keep stuck around so children don't harrass the ducks or other small animals.

My aunt lived on a "lake" aka the drainage ditch, and there were a ton of ducks. Each townhouse complex had it's own lake so the ducks waddled between them all. For the most part they were left alone by harrassing kids, but many people would throw their stale bread out for the ducks.
