Poor little ducklings....

We have a huge storm drain in the parking lot at work. There have been at least 3 times where Mommy ducks have lost babies in the storm drain, and each time our maintenance man would climb down and get them. To the best of my knowledge, not once did mom ever reject the duckling because they'd been touched by a human.

In a way, I do believe they understand that they were saved.

:goodvibes Thanks to you and your hubby!! What an AWESOME thing to do!

We discovered a mama duck with six eggs - she chose one of the median strips in my office parking lot for her nest! She's done a good job of hiding it - there are a few of us keeping an eye on it ... I'm worried about when they hatch and she has little ducklings walking around the parking lot (there is not a body of water anywhere close!)

I can't believe that no one has said this yet, so I guess I'll do it ....

Those little guys sure were lucky ducks! > rimshot <

We have two lakes in the neighboorhood and ducks live around the lake. DH went out riding his bike in the neighborhood today. He came home and said there were some ducklings stuck in a storm drain and mama duck was up on the street quacking in despair. We both went back to see what we could do.

We managed to get mama duck and two babies who were on the street relocated to a safe place. We had to get a neighbor to move his truck off the cover to the drain so we could access it. We removed the cover and looked in. There was a PILE of ducklings down in the drain. DH jumped down in there and he handed up a handful of little ducklings to me - about 5 of them. Such tiny little fluffy things. Then a second handful - about another 5 of them. They were so little I could hold all 5 of them in my two hands. Mama duck had about 12 babies and 10 of them fell down a storm drain.

All are safe and reunited with mama. YAY!!!

You brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thanks for a wonderful job of rescuing the babies.

We have a duck pond a street away and there are signs everywhere that we should not handle the ducklings. When I was young, my classmates told me that touching the ducklings means their mother will abandon them. Tell me it's not true!

We had chickens and ducks growing up, and a certain two children (my brother and I) did pet the babies and the mothers did indeed stop caring for them.

Maybe we just had sensitive mama ducks, but it was our experience (not just a myth told to us).

I hope the duck in this story isn't that sensitive.
