My Great Pyrenees mix started throwing up and having diarrhea on Thursday morning. (Yes, imagine, a 117-pound dog getting sick inside your house ) We put her food up after that. She bubbled at both ends a couple more times that afternoon. I called the vet right before they closed since I figured they'd be closed for the 4th of July.
The vet told me to not let her eat for 24 hours and then to feed her nothing but either boiled chicken or eggs for the next 4 days. Then the next 4 days after that, to mix chicken or eggs with about 1/2 of her Iams. By Thursday night she was no longer getting sick, but she was pretty empty by this point. My poor baby was so hungry until I was able to start feeding her chicken yesterday afternoon.
She has seemed fine, but this morning she was in my bedroom panting which usually means she has to go outside. I dragged my body out of bed and let her outside. And the liquid poop is back!
Do I stop feeding her again for 24 hours? Or is this expected that over the next few days starting eating again, that her stools would be really loose.
Sorry to be so gross! The vet is closed until Monday. As I type this, she is looking out the window barking at EVERYTHING she sees, so I know she is feeling okay. Help!

my vet recommends rice and boiled beef or chicken

It can take a while to work through their system. I would feed her a small meal of cooked chicken, no skin with white rice or cooked oatmeal. To that I would add a few tablespoons of yogurt. You can add sweet potato cooked also as she eats more.

If she is lethargic or seems in pain take her to the Vet now.

My Mastiff has had stomach distress more than a few times and this is the way we have helped him, per our Vet. Also be aware of bloat symptoms.

I sure hope she feels better soon!

I did think about adding rice, but my vet didn't mention it. Now I'm wondering if I should or not :confused3
She really seems fine. She is a big barker. When people call me on my cell phone, they know whether I'm home or not just by whether they hear Molly barking. If its daylight, more than likely, she's running around the house looking out windows trying to find something to bark at. She has been her regular self this morning and was yesterday, too. I was very surprised and disappointed when she started having diarrhea again this morning. Thank the Lord, I was home to let her outside! She has a very sensitive stomach unfortunately, but she has never had been sick this long.....

Have you tried pumpkin? I'm surprised your vet did not suggest it. I've yet to have any case of explosive D that wasn't solved by canned pumpkin. Buy the 100% pumpkin in the can and feed a couple tablespoons each mealtime (for a dog that size).

We do brown rice and boiled chicken, along with pumpkin. Always clears right up!

You withheld food so her diarrhea stopped. It is likely her system isn't healed yet so reintroducing any food would result with the original problem and continue until her system has healed.

Call you Vet and ask about adding some rice.

Canned pumpkin? Forgive me for my stupidity, but you mean just while she's sick, right? Do I need to do anything special to it- or just right out of the can?

Canned pumpkin is fantastic for a doggie digestive system - it's a miracle food, helps with constipation and diarrhea. I feed it on occasion just because they love it but it's a staple in our house for sick tummies.

Just spoon it right out of the can and on top of her chicken and rice. If she digs her Kong, you can stuff it right into the Kong and freeze it - a pumpkin pop!

You can do a Google search and find lots of info on it.

when our dog had the stomach and back end trots.....the vet gave her a shot and she was on antibiotics for a few days......she was off her food for a day and then chickenburger cooked in water and mixed with rice.....cup two or three times a day....and we did that for three days......she did have the runs for a few days ...

Our vet reccomends boiled burger and rice when the are under the weather. BUt you don't want to keep changing foods, at this time or any other.

If she is not vommitting anymore then I would continue with small portions of your mixture. If it was a bug or something it could take a few more days to "clear out".

as with any animal or human, make sure she is drinking at least somewhat, to keep hydrated.

Hope she feels better soon. Could it have been nerves from fireworks?

My vet recommends cottage cheese mixed with Pepto-Bismal... yep, pink cottage cheese! But it works like magic!

Love those barking Pyr's! We foster for the local rescue. Love those big, white, fluffy dogs!! And boy, do they love to bark! We call it "The Pyr is Here" announcement

Keep us updated...

Canned pumpkin or cottage cheese. Never heard about this. See what you learn on the DIS?

On the pumpkin, make sure its not the pie mix, Like Aimee said 100% pumpkin. They are normally right next to each other on the cake aisle, the pie mix has lots of added sugar which can upset her tummy more. The cans are very similar

Update-
Molly got better while she was on the chicken and rice. I gave that to her for several days and she cleared all up...........
Then about two days after being back on her IAMS, she got sick again. This time it looked like there was blood in her diarrhea. So we took her to the vet and he said that it was possibly some kind of parasite. We had to squirt some kind of medicine down her throat for five days for that just in case that was what it was. So we did the chicken and rice thing again and she got all better again.............
Now this morning she has started having very smelly gas and her stools seem to be getting looser again. She has only been back on just plain IAMS (no chicken or rice) since Sunday. Now here we are Wednesday and she is getting sick again. I called the vet just now and he told me to come by and he would give us some more anti-parasite medicine just in case the last round did not kill all of the parasites. However he does not even know if there were any parasites to begin with as the stool sample did not show any parasites last time. He's just thinking it may be parasites.
Molly seems to feel okay. She eats like a PIG and barks ALL THE TIME like she usually does. Could it be the IAMS making her sick? I'm not saying that I think the dog food is poisoned or bad or anything as our other dog is eating it and has not been getting sick. I'm just wondering if all of a sudden her body no longer likes IAMS. The vet tells me that IAMS is a really good dog food.
Over the past few months, Molly has had some bouts with diarrhea that lasted a few hours.............but nothing like this month

It sure sounds like the IAMS is bothering her. Maybe she developed an allergy to it. She gets better with the chicken and rice and when IAMS is reintroduced she has gastro issues again. Didn't your vet notice this pattern? All foods aren't created equally for sure and IAMS just is not high on my list. I hope you get to the bottom of her problem and she starts feeling better for good. :)

Jessica,
This is exactly what I'm thinking. I really do think its the IAMS also. My vet just seems to be downplaying the pattern, but I really think this may be what it is.
I'm thinking about giving her the anti-parasite medicine like the vet said. But putting her back on chicken and rice for four days and then gradually adding a NEW dog food- I don't want to switch her to a new one too quick, but I do want to get her off the IAMS.
Thank you for the recommendation on the dog food.:goodvibes

Is it the same bag of IAMS you were feeding prior? Maybe the batch is bad or the dog has developed an allergy?

I stopped using the old bag (even though it was not making my other dog sick) and started a new bag when I put her back on it this time. So I really think it may have something more to do with the brand like she has developed an allergy or something :confused3

That sounds like something in the IAM's is not agreeing with her to me as well. I have been feeding my dog Ekunuba (sp) since I got her, it was one of the brands reccomended by her vet.

You might look at the indgredients in the Iams and see if you can narrow it down, since she does ok on chicken and rice you can cross those off, so see what else is in the IAMs that might be causing it.

That is aggravating.

Is he drinking a ton of water? I know if my dogs drink tons of water it makes their stools looser.

I have a dog with a sensitive stomach too. We do not give any "dog" treats.

Do you give treats? Maybe something there is bugging the dog?
