Pool question - can a pool have too much water in it?

This morning I looked out back, and the water in the pool (inground) was way low. I went out and turned the hose on to fill it then conveniently forgot about it. Now the water is almost to the top - about 3 inches over the mark where it should be. If the pump kicks on, will that much water damage the pump or damage something else I'm not even thinking about?

I tried calling dh and he isn't answering his cell and he isn't at the office. Should I be out there with a bucket getting the extra water out? I talked to his boss (who had a pool in the past), but I felt too stupid to ask him.

Probably won't hurt the equipment. The only thing that will happen is that the skimmers won't work properly.

Are the skimmers those recesses in the side where the filters are?

The skimmer is the side ports on the wall where the water gets sucked into the pump (not to be confused with the bottom drain, return jets or Lilly pad skimmer…it floats) Any way the water should be ½ way up for best filtration. If there is to much water it can cause problems by not regulating the amount of water going into the pump. If it is for a short while no big deal. If you are in a hot climate the evaporation will probably take care of it before you really need to.

BEEN THERE - DONE THAT! LOL!! :rotfl:

I really don't think there will be a problem, but like DJR said, if they water line is above the skimmer openings, they obviously won't skim properly until the water level drops.

Oh and if you do want to get rid of some of the water, the easiest way is to simply backwash.

Shouldn't be a problem - unless you get a lot of rain and then it will overflow.

Been meaning to tell you - love your new pic in your siggy.

Skimmers? Filters? Backwashing? :faint:

I'm hiring a pool boy to take care of this stuff for me while dh is busy! ;)

I don't think we are getting rain anytime soon. Thanks for the sig pic compliment. :)

Nah. Had mine going on 11 years. The equipment is nothing more the a big water-pump forcing the water through a filter. Too much water won't hurt anything.

NOT enough water would. Because then your pump would be sucking air and could burn out (pumps are usually cooled by the water).

I wish that I could be worrying about how much water was in my pool. Right now I just have a sheet of ice over the cover!
