Just put in an in-ground last year. We have the DE.... Of course we have all this fancy equipment so we had to go top of the line.
We also have a salt-water pool.

If I'm not mistaken, my parents have a sand filter, and while I've never heard them raving about it, I've also never heard them complaining about it either. They seem to be pretty easy to maintain both during the season and in winter.

we bought one of the newer cartridge filters 2 years ago.

I love it. The maintenance on it is so much easier than our old DE Filter.

DE users vs cartridge, I keep hearing DE needs more maintenance, all I kind find is it needs proper backwashing, am I missing something?

Well it largely depends on where you live.

I'm in Illinois and our house is right next to a Forest Preserve. Our pool is surrounded by Oak Trees. Thus, we get ALOT of organic material in the pool and we are constantly fighting algae

We have skimmers and things, but alot of it goes into the filter. DE filter very tiny particles. Our clogged contantly and the pressure would get very high. I would have to open it up, clean it out, drain out all the old DE and replace it several times every summer.

The cartridges work much better for us because they don't clog as easily. Plus, I have an extra set. When I remove one set I set them to soak in the cleaning solution and then rinse them off. I only need to change them a couple of times a summer. I just open it up, stick the clean ones in, and close it again. It is much less messy and doesn't take nearly as long.

People who live in "cleaner" areas than our pool don't have near as many problems with the DE filters.

Our old pool we had cartridge. Now we have sand. I liked the way you could just pop the filter in. I didn't like the way you had to clean the filters when they got gunky. I do like the way I can divert the water to dry spots in the yard when I backwash now.
I can't say I like one better than the other when it comes to sand or filter.

Started out with a cartridge filter, and changed to DE because with the cartridge if it got really dirty, it would blow back into the pool. So I changed to the DE. IMO..sand or DE

hey to confuse things even further. I remember seeing in one of the pool catalogs last year that they now have DE Cartridge Filters. I don't know what those are like, but perhaps they are easier to backwash than the older DE Filters??

Now I know why they push DE here in Texas....little particles all the time!!!!!! We fired up our pool in August and had to backwash a few weeks ago.

My above ground pool is approaching twenty years old, Johnny Wesimuller SAFARI. I am on my third liner, third pump and still have my original DE Filter, HAYWORD DE-350 I believe. I clean it out everyyear by removing the fingers and cleaning them with a hose. My pool is about half covered with trees so I do get a lot of organic material. I have to recharge it with DE about once a season. I believe that that the DE filters the water much better than sand, my pool always looks clearer than neighbors with SAND. I also can run my filter about 50% less than a sand filter, I run it just enought to turn the water over. I am sure both types of filters over the years have improved, However I swear by my DE Filter.
