Pool Hopping Question

With all of the recent hub-bub about pool hopping and the treatment of DVC members, especially in regards to this PRIVILEGE, a question came to mind. We are DVC members and we have 250 pts which we try to stretch. ALong with the fact that we live fairly close to WDW (an hour and a quarter away), we go quite frequently and will from time to time pay cash at other Disney resorts (usually at a moderate, or the occasional premium). When we are staying at another Disney resort paying cash (so the id card just says resort guest), are we bound by the same no pool hopping rules as other resort guests, OR, since we do have DVC membership cards, are we allowed to still pool hop since we are DVC members, just not using our points for that stay?
Any thoughts (or facts) on thi

You have to be staying "On Points" rather than for cash to get pool-hopping.

And you have to be staying at a DVC resort. (Staying with DVC points at a resort such as the Grand Floridian doesn't allow you to pool hop.)

I see the little yellow smiley after that comment, but is that true? I know that Hilton Head is too far for a reasonable day trip to WDW, but I could actually imagine someone making a day trip to WDW from Vero Beach (and possibly including a stop at a WDW resort pool).

The write-up about pool hopping that I have is from 1993, so it just says, "Disney Vacation Club Members and your guests staying at the Disney Vacation Club Resort have access to all Walt Disney World swimming pools. Just show your Resort ID card, which identifies you as a member, to the host/hostess at each pool location." (It says "the Disney Vacation Club Resort" because there was only one DVC resort at that time -- the resort now known as Old Key West.)
