Pool at Poly is such a let down!

Wow - now that's just awful if one does that. This is getting out of hand.

I could not see myself purposely shutting the gate right behind me when there was someone right behind me. I would feel so rude. I would be one to let the pool hoppers in by just trying to be nice! They need employees with scanners, just like at SAB.

Our subdivision has an RFID Pool Gate Lock... no 'key'... no access.

We have absolutely denied a group of kids who had been lingering at the gate waiting for someone to leave. We paused... politely asked them if they had a key... and when they said 'no', closed the gate behind us preventing them from entering.

I never once thought I was being awful or rude, quite the opposite really... as I feel we allowed for a more enjoyable experience for current and future pool guests, who pay HOAs to have access to such an amenity.

For the rates and maintenance dues Resort guests and DVC members pay... no guest of the Polynesian should ever feel 'shame' asking a member to scan their Magic Band to enter the gate, per Resort Policy.

But this is my point exactly in my earlier post: if Poly management really cared about stopping pool hoppers, they would have CM's at the gates making sure that everyone that attempts to enter the pool area is actually staying at the Poly. It should not be left up to resort guests to "police" the gates themselves. My god, for the nightly rates we are all paying to stay at our beloved Poly, I can't believe how many folks feel it is totally ok for Poly management to let us potentially play the "bad guy" by making sure we quickly shut the gate on other guests that are attempting to enter the pool area. Why is the Y&BC the only resort that can figure this simple concept out? typhoonlagooner, I agree with everything you stated in your post. But my question is, why should any of us, as guests of the Poly, have to do any of these things you mention?

Is it really that hard to shut the gate behind you?

I'm curious what that means? Not because I want to sit in judgement but because I just can't figure out what the issue is. Are the undesirables those that get drinks at the bar and the upper class are those that don't get drinks? That doesn't seem to make sense so I fell I'm missing something.
I've visited the Poly pool bar without having a reservation, but I made sure to hold my drink with my pinky finger out so that I'd fit in. It's just common courtesy.

We have stayed at both moderates and deluxes. Disney is our annual splurge for our family of 5. We are NOT filthy rich and are a dual income family. We love our pool time and there is nothing more frustrating then not being able to find a few spots by the pool. The Poly pools are appropriate size and number for the size of the resort and not to accommodate pool hoppers - plain and simple. There is nothing more frustrating to hear a large group bragging about pool hopping and you were lucky enough to find two chairs for the rate you chose to splurge on. I was there in April and I'll take the fence so I can enjoy the amenities I'm paying for. Flame me but if you want to enjoy a cocktail at the pool budget for it like we do! (One in college too!)

I completely agree. I am exactly like you, dual income, family of 5, and its the tables and chair part that really bothered me. Almost $500/night and I cant sit by the pool?
One year I had to laugh..there were a lot of guests at the pool and a CM announced they would be doing some trivia game. Many families went over to the area to play the trivia game, then the CM announced that we had to sign up our "team name" and show our KTTW cards. 90% of the families left the area and went back to the pool! Hmmmmm. We played! It was 3 second audio clips of songs from Disney movies. I thought...I have this in the bag!! Yeah...I bombed big time. Amazed me that people know every sound from every Disney movie ever made!

That's a great point. Thanks so much for your help!

It is a great point. Are people that lazy that they can't close a gate, they would rather Disney pay someone to do it for them? Or pay someone to patrol the pool area?

People complain Disney should do something about pool hoppers, so they put in a fence and a gate. And now it is simply too hard to close the gate behind you? Boggles the mind.

Well with the price they are charging per night for the Poly... :)

I personally don't think it is snobbery to expect access to an option you have paid for. The Disney rules are very clear. If you are not a guest of the resort, stay out of the pool area. As it has been said, if it was a free for all, those paying for the privledge may be without use of the facilities. I think Disney is aware that the fences and access controlled gates will not keep everyone out that is not supposed to be there but will hopefully act as a detourant to those people who have any respect for rules and are interested in teaching their children the same.

Your level of lucidity is inspiring. Thanks again!

I found this one on another website:

I think this fence is nice and has full potential with the landscape maturing and blending with the fence. Many areas in Disney start out looking similar until the landscape start to mature. I can say we have stayed at the PR countless times lodging in the Hawaii building. One of the trends we saw over the years was a surge of non-guest using the pools throughout the day, so its nice to see a mechanism to maintain resorts facilities designated for resort guest provided to guest as Disney taking a passive complaint driven position. Its a major reason we stopped staying at the resort....maybe time to take another look at the PR in the future. This change was well overdue. Just add a few CMs to manage the perimeter like you do at SAB.

I get a kick out of people saying its snobbery when Poly guests say they dont want pool hoppers. I am anything but a snob. I dont care if every guest at the MK went to the Poly pool, as long as there was space for me. Like I said above...for nearly $500/night, I would hope I got an opportunity to sit by the pool. Its when non Poly guests take up the available seating is what upsets me..... regardless if they were staying at the GF or ASM.
The last time I was at the Poly was in 2010. I vowed never to go back due to the no seating at the pool and the parking issue every day. I do LOVE the resort and was thrilled to hear about the fence and parking guard checking for dining ressies and resort guests. I am now booked again, but starting to feel worried with the mentions of fences not working and parking still being an issue.

Really??? Again with the snobby jabs. Is it pinky etiquette that my DH and I work our butts off to splurge on our family once a year? This has nothing to do with snobbery. If you want certain things in life you have to work for them. I will not be handing access to the pool on a silver platter for someone who isn't willing to pay the price but wants it because everything they want should be handed to them because they're special. Please, enough with the snobbery jabs it's offensive.

If there was a group behind me I'd just keep walking a bit past the pool gate until they let themselves in.

I like your more passive approach.

Someone posted a short video on Tikiman's FB page last night. It shows that the RFID lock on at least one of the gates is operational again.

And again, I have to ask, why would Disney go to the trouble of installing locks that require the user to be a guest at the Poly in order to gain entrance if the fence's only purpose is for safety? If the fence is in place just to keep everyone out when the pool is closed, then there was no need to have the RFID reader on the gates. They could simply unlock the gates at opening and lock them again at closing. This seems to me to be Disney's passive approach to discouraging non-resort guests from entering the pool area.
