Okay so I have come to think of the DIS boards as an extended family so, while what I am about to say is embarassing and perhaps a little bit too much info for some of you .... i really need to put this out there and get some suggetions.

I am a size 26, I am recovering from Thyroid Cancer of which I had surgery this past July and it caused me to spring from and already hefty size of 18 to now a 26!!! as a result of this weight increase i totally notice everything is more of a struggle and Im scared about my trip Im about to take.

I notice that I have a problem with all my pants rubbing the inside of my thighs, and it causes these painful rash type bumps and I dont know how to keep this from happening. I think i read before about like tight knee length spandex or something under my shorts or capris to prevent rubbing but, I am afraid im gonna sweat to death. What to do? What is moleskin for? Or am I even saying it right?

Please, I need help, if someone will reply and not just read and laugh I would truly appreciate it.

Be blessed.

i am so happy to hear you are recovering!!!! I think it is called moleskin, there was another thread that spoke about it. im sure someone else will know for sure. not sure if talc would help or not but i know it needs to be pure with no perfume! Hope you have a great time!!!!!

Mole skin is for the feet

You need Body Glide!!! It's the size and shape of a deodorant. You rub it on your thighs before getting dressed and voila...no more painful red chaffing skin.

I heard about it before our last trip and I LOVED it!

I have been a size 26 and pear shaped so thigh chaffing is something I am familiar with. When doing all the walking at WDW I used a product called Bodyglide. It is an anti chafe stick, kinda looks like deodorant but you roll it on your legs. Bodyglide creates a soft, comfortable greaseless barrier to protect your skin from rash, chafing, blisters, sores and rubbing. I got it an REI store but lots of places sell it even Amazon.

I get quite of bit of relief from Zinc Oxide. It clears up the rash overnight in most cases and prevents it from reoccurring. The only thing bad is that it stinks so go easy with it! It's very inexpensive so try it at home first.

can that bodyglide stuff be used on all chafing areas? I get horible chafing from tee shirts and from my sandles. Yea, I have troubled skin..

Body Glide is awesome. I brought some along on my last two trips and it worked very well on the bottoms of my feet as well as the inner thigh area.

Ah the dreaded Chub Rub... baby powder and Body Glide will be your friends. Also, I'd hope this is a given, but if you find it gets worse as the weather heats up, staying squeaky clean will help if only to keep any ickies from clogging up your pores and all that.

I love that saying "the chub rub" thank you ALL for your input ... I had never even thought of the body glide but I assure you I will be getting some of that on short order.

I appreciate the understanding, perhaps someone who had not experienced such a horrible feeling would not think of how taking each step could be agonizing if dealing with those rashes etc.

hi!, I noticed you said you had THYCA and I was wondering what kind you had. I had Follicular Adenocarcinoma and it had actually attached itself all the way my vocal cords. It also got into some of my lymph nodes and so I had to have a neck dissection with my surgery. It was rough with the weight gain so I know what you mean. :offtopic: I also had my parathyroid glands nicked and they stopped working properly. I know have hypocalcemia because of it. I don't know if you know this, but I used to be in a group ran by Catherine Bell ( JAG< ARMY WIVES) and she is also a survivor! She does not participate in the group discussion any more due to her hectic schedule, but I do see her periodically at the taping of Army wives:banana:. Back to the topic, Many people also use corn starch to help with chaffing. So I hope that what ever you decide to use it helps you.

Another fellow thyca survivor here. I dont have any advice about the chafing, but I am sure learning alot from the fellow posters too.

I was just curious as to your weight gain too. For the past year I havent gained any weight but they are keeping me realy hyper as mine is really rare and agressive (columnar cell variant). Now I have gained 8 lbs. in 3 months and I dont know why?

Well if you want to share I would appreciate any info. Blessings to you.

I agree with the body glide. It will help prevent the rubbing rashes. Good luck!

OP: I don't have any advice not already offered, but I just wanted to wish you all the best...and nobody's laughing. You have been through a great deal. I've had a couple of close relative go through a fight w/cancer. The meds alone can cause substantial weight gain, not to mention you've probably had to physically slow down a lot too. I say KUDOS to you for your bravery! Best wishes and I hope everything turns out great for you! Hope you feel all the love coming your way!

I am a size 28 and the "chub rub" seems to be clothing dependant for me. Some shorts give it to me and some don't. I never heard of body glide. I want to check it out now.

Kim

Hi everyone, thank you again for the responses.... I really take the time to understand and thoroughly read all the great advise I get. I agree with what Kim said about the chub rub being clothing dependent ... I notice that sometimes I have a problem and sometimes I do not ... But I do know that the inseam of most pants or capris cause a painful blister or rash (whichever) and it stinks... I am hopeful that body glide can help ....

Now some of the most recent posts have been in regards to my thyroid cancer. I DEFINATELY encourage anyone who has questions or concerns or maybe even wants to talk to me about thyca to send me a private message.

I was the type person who never went to the doctor .. I decided after 7 years of not going that I needed a physical. I went to get a physical and the doctor said my thyroid felt "full" so, she ordered blood work which came back okay. Lucky for me she was not satisfied with that and she sent me to get an iodine uptake / ultrasound scan. The ultrasound showed the thyroid to be really really big.

The doctor ordered a biopsy ... which came back undetermined .. not normal or abnormal so the doctors decided to do surgery which in where they were gonna take out 1/2 and send it to pathology to see if it was cancerous ... and if it came back that it was cancerous then they would take out the other part while I was still under. So ... low and behold, it came back that I had pappillary thyroid cancer and the whole thing had to come out.

Problem is, not only did they take out my thyroid ... but they accidentally took out 2 of my parathyroid glands as well. I am now hypoparathyroid and I have a serious calcium deficiency and I have big problems with tingling in my hands and feet, and problems with feeling out of breath (as I found out the hard way that calcium controls your muscle around your heart) and therefore mine is beating irregular and causing my body to work harder.

I had my surgery 7/21 (this past July) and Ive gone through radiation and now I get blood work once a month which always has issues ......

I do not like to get on a pity pulpit but, I do not have much support. I do not come from a big loving family, it just seems that I am looked at as being fat and lazy rather than someone trying hard to be whatever normal is again and just not feel tired.

Again, ANYONE who wants to talk, I would love it.

Body glide is great but what i have found works even better is to use "jock itch" cream for any redness that does form. it takes the burn/stinging away overnight.

something you might also want to keep in mind is if you have the "apron" or the underbelly area - that can get SUPER moist and a good way to heal that if it happens is diaper rash cream (i prefer desitin creamy because its so much easier to get off your hands after you apply) but when I was in disney a year ago, i didnt realize how bad i would sweat there and the trapped moisture can cause weeping skin and that will cure it right up once you dry it off.

For this I get a generic anti-fungal cream at Walmart and it works great and fast
