Ponchos

We always bring some Dollar Store ponchos. I can easily carry one or two in my purse and throw them out afterwards so I don't have to carry around a wet poncho. We use them for Splash Mountain too.

We have used both the dollar store ones and bought Disney ones. The dollar ones are definitely a one and done type of product. They are shorter, so expect to still get wet to some degree with them... the Disney ones, although a bit costly for a poncho, are thicker and more durable - and longer. Plus when they rip, WDW will exchange it for a new one for you. Well worth it and a nice souvenir you can use in the future too.

We always bring poncho's just in case. We get them from Walmart. They are usually around $1 - $2. We buy them knowing if we have to use them we will throw them away. To us, it's not worth it to carry around wet plastic.

I was so pleased with myself that I remembered to buy the $2 ponchos sold at Target. But going there on a stormy day, the thin material just blew all over the place with gusts of wind, and had hardly any coverage. In the future, I'm thinking of buying a very light waterproof shell jacket and wearing that. Hopefully it won't be too hot during the summer.

personally i just fold the disney wet poncho back up and toss it in a plastic bag before putting it back into my purse then when i get back to the hotel i hang it to dry for the next morning.

Can I ask what everyone does with their Disney/more expensive ponchos after it rains and you're still in the park? We brought $1 Store ones last visit and luckily never had to use them in the parks. But we did get caught in some downpours and then were stuck with soaking wet ponchos. I appreciated having disposable $1 ponchos because we could just toss them. But they certainly weren't the best quality so I can see where having some of the Disney ones would be nice.

as i had just said in the post above yours we just fold them up and put them in a plastic bag and then put that into our purses and then when we get back to the hotel we take them out and hang them to dry until morning.

we usually take them off inside out so when they are folded the wetness is not touching the plastic bag.

and when we have needed to use them more than once in a day having them folded inside out makes it less gross to put back on because you don't need to touch the wetness.
you just unfold and put it on turning it right side out as you put it over you head.

Sorry, I hadn't refreshed the page from when I read this post last night, but when I posted your post popped up like you had read my mind! :) Thanks for the tips!

I've never worn a poncho in all my 18 trips to Disney.. shocking, I know! My dad refused to buy them, and we used to call him 'Poncho Villa' after the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, because he revolted against their use. :) During one of my adult trips I took a cheap disposable one with me and it tore as soon as I took it out of the package, making me think my Dad was right about them. But my last trip I got caught in a rainstorm that made me feel icky, and I'm going to give it a try this trip, so I'm looking for poncho advice.

Do you buy ponchos before your trip, or do you buy them in the parks? Do you prefer the cheap disposable ones or better quality ones that you can reuse? If I go the cheap route, I think I'd buy multiples to use in case one tears again, but I'm wondering if they would be too flimsy to be of much use in a downpour.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. :)

My cousins have bought them for cheap at Wal-Mart and they're able to stick them in their purse/back pocket. But something that I will never get over is when people wear their ponchos on Splash Mountain. I've been on that ride about 100 times in my life and maybe my arms get wet, but not enough to wear a poncho.

maybe you will after i explain why...
i love splash mountain, i love the theme, i love the songs, i love the characters, i love the drops.
i am not a fan of getting wet and then walking around all day drying out.
when you're lucky enough to only get a few sprinkles of wetness on your clothes its fine but when the timing is off and you get absolutely soaked and even though you wore quick drying shorts your underwear are still uncomfortably wet all day its not fun and well worth tossing the poncho on in order to ensure that does not happen.
