Poncho Talk

I guess it depends on how windy it is and how much notice I know the wet stuff is coming.

I prefer the umbrella when my goretex is not handy.
  • plastic is not breatheable
  • easier to shake off the umbrella when I walk into a restaurant
  • my backpack stays dry... for windier days.... the compact is left at home and I reach for the golf umbrella

We were there Labor Day week. It stormed on Sunday and we used the cheap .99 Walmart ponchos and they worked fine. When we got back to the resort we hung them up on hangers to dry and the next day we packed them in zip lock baggies. Did not need them again but they were perfectly good for another go.

We have the ones from Disney. We used them last week during our trip - only put it on twice and on Sunday 9/4 it poured for hours and my poncho was great. This is the 4th trip that I've brought them on and they're still in great shape! If they rip or tear, you can replace them in disney at no extra charge.

I've done it all. The 99 cent then toss it, the Disney ones (which last for years) and this year I got the IKEA ponchos and LOVE them. They are longer, they have no open gaps down the side for all that ran to come in, the hood fits well, they are easy to shake off and dry much faster than the Disney ones and they fold up into their pockets. Was just there in rain and stayed super dry!

(They have matching fold up totes, two sizes of backpacks, umbrellas ... all very light and since they seem to be same fabric they would be water repellant.

We have all the colors. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50330499/

OMG, those are super amazing. I am going to have to snag some at Ikea before our trip!

Haven't read through all the replies but have a question that may have already been answered here.... Do they replace them even if they're older versions purchased inside the parks or only the current designs being sold? Ours are several years old at this point and I always wonder, will this be the year they fall apart and will they replace them.

We like the Disney ponchos. They've lasted us years. I'm short so an adult poncho covers most of me.

I first saw a kid sized one on a kid at DHS, as I was in my Disney one. They looked so dry and comfortable .... so I asked the kid if they were staying dry. They said yes. I saw the little tag IKEA and the mission was on.

The IKEA ones look amazing!

We just bring the dollar store ponchos. Bring them every trip and it rains at least once, but we have only ever used them one time. They are tiny and easy to carry.

I didn't even know they did this until our last trip! My niece seems to always have something happen to hers...

We were in the gift ship behind the castle and the CM noticed her snap has torn off and replaced it without even asking us! I didn't know it was an option and, even if I did, I wouldn't have asked for the one snap! It was great of her to notice!

We stick with the Disney ponchos because they will replace them when/if they get damaged. I don't know what my youngest son did, but we needed to replace his poncho two times during our last visit.

I showed my BF, and even he agreed that they looked great and that he'd wear one. He liked that it's longer, and will still be plenty roomy with a backpack on. He also liked that we will be able to find each other in a sea of semi-clear white ponchos (He can have anxiety in large crowds and being able to immediately spot someone he knows helps)

I'm in the Disney poncho camp. There are a lot more durable than the cheapie ponchos, they dry very easily back in your hotel room, and like everyone has said above, Disney will replace them if you rip them. There's also no need to buy them in advance. Just pick them up when you get there. Every retail location everywhere has boxes of them.

I wore my backpack under it and what a difference. With the "plastic" Disney ones my pack was always getting stuck or pulling and with this it was roomy and no friction. I have red with white tiny dots, DS has grey/slate with tiny dots and other DS has black. In my wild imagination I see Mickey heads with the dots. This one in catalog is an all new and I might go get that too. BUT I suppose we should stop talking about them so no one else gets them :D

I'll second the Ikea ponchos. They are very nice. Have their own built-in storage pouch that doubles as a pocket to put stuff in when you're wearing them. No gaps on the side so you are dry on all sides, not just the front and back. The hood is also nice as there is a velcro there so you can open it when not wearing the hood, or you can adjust the tightness. The elastic around the head opening in the hood keeps the hood in place when it's windy.

I bought ponchos from Tokyo Disneyland and they are even more durable than the US ones, much thicker vinyl. But every time I've brought them with me to WDW when the forecast calls for rain, I've never used them.
