I don't believe there is dog poop at the Polynesian, but if I had to step in it somewhere.....
To the OP, consider the "negative" things you have read. Then consider if you had the same experience that it would "ruin my entire vacation."
For instance, someone complained about a smell in an elevator. While I have not experienced that at the Polynesian, if you could not tolerate the one or two floor trip in an elevator next to a smelly tourist, then perhaps you should stay at a resort without elevators, or request a first floor room.
Another complaint was that the room had not been serviced by housekeeping prior to the poster's return for a mid-day nap. Rather than request "early housekeeping" the poster changed resorts mid-trip

. Trust me, just like every other hotel, everyone's room gets housekeeping but not every room is cleaned first and one room is cleaned last. If the timing of housekeeping is important to you, let the housekeeping staff know.
A funny comment I read recently had to do with the poster's opinion of the lobby at the Polynesian. The complaint was "the look is dated." Then the poster said they much preferred the lobby of Wilderness Lodge!

Uhmm, Wilderness Lodge is meant to invoke the style and design of the great National Park lodges built during the Depression / 1930's. Can't get much more "dated" then that! (Well, GF might be late 19th century).
Finally, alot of the negatives posted here recently have had a "not worth it" undertone. Yes, the Polynesian is an expensive resort. In terms of facilities, rooms and amenities it is comparable to a nice Marriott or Hilton, which in the "real world" (as opposed to Disney's World) would most likely charge less per night. But then there is no where else in the world, Disney or otherwise, that has the views, the location, transportation options, and those tiki torch lit pathways.
Have a great trip wherever you stay!
