DH and I were discussing peanuts and were wondering how most people eat them.

Do some folks really eat the shells? 'Cause that's just....ewwww. If I need fiber that bad, I'll just eat some oatmeal.

Ewwwwwe! Gross. I can't even imagine sucking on a peanut shell. Pistachio shell yes, peanut shell, no.

Yes, I know a few people who do that. I agree with your assesment of it also.

Can't eat peanuts. They make me ill

OK I couldn't vote, because in the UK salted peanuts don't come in shells... the only ones in shells that I see are the ones that the squirrel in our garden plants in my flower pots... They don't grow really well though!

I too have never heard of anyone eating the shell!

sorry but i dont eat nuts of any sort.. cant help ya.

I voted to shell then eat but like Southern4sure I love boiled peanuts. Those I suck out all the good stuff and then eat the peanut minus shell. Ok now I want some boiled peanuts. Thanks:cool1:

I break the shell and eat the peanuts, but I LOVE to eat them at baseball games so I can drop them on the ground, making a big mess. :dance3: At my son's baseball games there might be a big pile of shells by my chair, especially if it's a close game or otherwise tense (ie if he's pitching :rotfl: ). Sometimes I kick the shells somewhere else so it doesn't look like I'm a big pig. :rotfl2:

BTW, I buy the big bags of peanuts at Sam's Club and all the baseball parents know that I supply peanuts for all the games. :teeth:

Me too me too! I have not been able to find boiled peanuts down here since we moved. I guess I will have to do it myself! I'd rather suck a boiled peanut than those nasty mud bugs.

:confused3 Salted peanuts come in a can or jar. The peanuts you buy in the shell are natural and unsalted. Or am I missing some southern delicacy?

We're talking peanuts in a shell, like you would get at a baseball game.

I have never heard of boiling peanuts either. What is the consistency like boiled?

You brought up a good question for me, because I had never wondered how the peanuts in shells were salted.

From the American Peanut Council:

To season peanuts in the shell - prior to roasting- the peanuts are washed and then the seasonings, which are dissolved in water, are forced through the shells by a pressure process. When dried during roasting, the seasonings remain inside the shells.

But I do prefer plain peanuts more. Planters salted peanuts have a bazillion extra ingredients beyond salt, and it does not make sense.

I've never had peanuts in the shell that were salted. The only ones I've ever seen or eaten were "au natural". But then again, I've never gone out of my way to look for them, and probably won't, because I do prefer them unsalted.
