POLL: Remembering this Disney Decade

Not really my personal favorite but something that I notice as a major impact at the parks is Disney Pin Trading

I would call this the decade of Pixar, Pirates, and Promotions. WDW added just enough new attractions to keep us interested, but not nearly enough to give the "Wow" we all crave.

I think a lot of great things happened with Disney this decade. Here's my list, in no particular order:

1. Pirates, Pirates Everywhere! (movies, attraction rehabs, party, tutorial, make-over, merchandise, accomodations)
2. New resorts: POP Century, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Tree House Villas, Bay Lake Tower
3. Year of a Milltion Dreams
4. Tokyo Sea
5. The Wand Came Down
6. New attracations: Soarin', Fantasyland Expansion Announcement, Buzz Lightyear, Finding Nemo: The Musical, Test Track, Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor, Toy Story Mania, Jedi Training Academy
Attraction Rehabs: Ellen added to Universe of Energy, Updated O Canada Film, The Seas, President Obama, Pixie Hollow
7. New resort features: Magical Express, Key to the World Cards
8. D23
9. Green Iniatives for the Parks
10. New tours: Segway Tour
11. New restaurants: Yak and Yeti
12. New special events: Food & Wine Festival
13. New internet features: Online ADR System, Disney Parks Blog & Twitter Account
14. The Turn Around of ABC
15. Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba
16. New aquisitions: The Muppets, Pixar
17. Iger Replacing Eisner
18. Adventures by Disney

There will always be negative things from this decade that stick with me but not very many. They include:

1. The Monorail Crash
2. The Death of Roy Disney
3. The Closing of Pleasure Island
4. MGM-Studios becomes Hollywood Studios
5. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
6. Disney Dining Plan
7. Sale of the Mighty Ducks
8. Dropping The Chronicles of Narnia Series
9. Discontinuing Figment Meet-n-Greet

I think you're missing a few. Even if you leave out the Disney Pixar films (and why would you?) there was also:

Fantasia 2000
Dinosaur
Lilo and Stitch
Treasure Planet
Brother Bear
Home on the Range
Chicken Little
Meet the Robinsons
Bolt
The Princess and the Frog

Thankfully FOX is saving the Narnia franchise now.

I'll remember this decade for Pirates.

The closure of the Adventurers Club.

Probably isn't that monumental to most (except Bill From PA)

The decade I really discovered the magic. :cool1:

I think this decade will be remembered as the Decade of Pixar.

I would like to also mention the amazing effect of pin trading at the parks. I don't know that the decade will be remembered for pin trading, but it sure has become a huge part of my experience.

Decade of DVC explansion. When the decade opened, the WDW DVC resorts were Old Key West & Boardwalk Villas (plus offsite Vero Beach & Hilton Head).

Added:
Villas at Wilderness Lodge
Beach Club Villas
Saratoga Springs
Animal Kingdom Villas
Bay Lake Tower
In California - Villas at the Grand California

As a DVC member who bought in 1999, I love all the new choices!

Disney went through a decade to me of transition.
I look forward to see Disney come out of transition and into a phrase of defining themselves.

I think Disney has gone through the same the the country has gone through.

On a more personal Disney note.. It was the decade that Disney defined me and my family. This decade Disney has become a large part of what we watch, where we go, even what we listen to on our ipod's. Because of that I thank Disney and I certainly look forward to watch my family continue to grow with Disney helping us along the way!

The decade I really discovered the magic. :cool1:

i would agree with you. this is the decade i came back to disney, i hadnt been to WDW in 10 years before...and for the past four years, ive made at least two trips a year.
i think the year of a million dreams was awesome ..i loved everything about that :cloud9:

The decade I really discovered the magic. :cool1:

Ditto here. I was reintroduced to WDW when I decided to take a trip to commerate my 40th birthday in 2000. I was going alone, so I thought it would be the safest way to travel. Since then, I have gone alone, with family, and with friends.

And I did the Land/Sea package in 2000, so it introduced me to the world of cruising!!!:yay:

Just a few comments:

Positive: I respectfully disagree with PP's who don't like the addition of Resorts.... It is actually the thought of experiencing new Resorts and Dining that has me wanting to go back again & again....The Resorts old & new are interesting to me ...each of them...in and of themselves...:cool1:
Is this because the new Resorts in 2000's have predominantly been DVC?

Negative: The closing of Adventurer's Club. Kongaloosh!:sad1:

for PP....Comcast might buy NBC...Probably because NBC is for Sale....I believe General Electric (or whomever parent is called now) is interested in getting out of the TV business....I don't normally follow those things....just interested in that one.....

The biggest thing happening at WDW in the 2000's IMHO....will be my Wedding in 2002 at Poly. ....and then consequential visits with my new blended family in '04, 06, '08....

Great Thread! I love everyone's comments...

Does anyone know when the Disney Institute closed? I read a kids' book about it when I was younger - the Disney Girls series - and ever since I wanted to try it. :\

I agree with geogat...I grew up in this decade (I was 10 in 2000) so as I got older I came into my own and discovered the magic of Disney waiting to be unlocked. Now, as geogat said, it defines me. :tinker:
