We don't feel an obligation, but if I'm in big city where there are large churches with spectacular music I might go. If I'm visiting friends or family I might go with them. If I'm just at the beach or on a road trip, I'll probably skip it.
I've been to London twice and I've been to services at St Paul's and Westminster Abbey. Spectacular! The first time we went to St Paul's, by coincidence they had a group singing a mass my choral group had just sung the year before. I was thrilled and it was interesting to hear little boys singing my part! It's interesting to see how other people worship.
It's funny how things change though. I can still remember some of the churches we visited on vacation as a child. We often went if my parents thought something looked interesting. Glide Memorial in San Francisco in the 60's was particularly memorable! The hippy culture was big at the time and that was who the congregation was ministering to. People were dancing in the aisles, etc. My parents had prepared us, so we weren't taken by surprise, but it was still amazing. There seemed to be lots of other visitors too. Many years ago we would do a bulletin board at church in the summer for people to post bulletins of churches they visited. It was always interesting to see. Now most of us don't go to church on vacation.
