Poll about banning free dining (Inspired by Geezer)

Vote your favorite option

  • Do away with Free Dining completely and bring back good food

  • Keep FD, but eliminate the Signatures from the included list

  • Run FD in the summer only when crowds are high

  • Expand it to include DVC

Results are only viewable after voting.
Where does it say that only DVC members can vote and comment? The DVC board is not exclusive to DVC members. Maybe dpmfloyd is thinking of becoming a DVC member or maybe s/he just wants to add their opinion to the mix. It's allowed.

I withdraw my statement. Goodbye.

Not a slight of you at all. Your comment would be appropriate if this poll was on the dining board or budget board, but it isn't. It's on the DVC board, and needs to be related to DVC or it would be moved to those other boards.

My comment is appropriate. It is a suggestion to better improve the results by adding logic.

Simply by mentioning this is a DVC only post confirms the ignorance a handful of DVC members have. Not all...but...some...

Robin, I didn't say this poll was exclusive to DVC members, but I did specifically leave out the "let's keep free dining" option because I wanted to know how DVC members felt about it. Geezer is right about this poll being in jeopardy of being moved to a different board if it didn't have a direct relationship to DVC.

I understand your frustration, but as I said in the earlier post, we are limited on this board to topics that have some relationship to DVC. If they aren't specific to DVC, they are moved to the other appropriate board.

sorry for making waves! :) i'm learning stuff!

I understand that you were trying to word the poll to keep it here instead of over on the restaurant board, but I think it could have been worded differently and still remain on the DVC boards. I am a DVC member who has booked through CRO to get free dining and would have answered "keep free dining" if the option had been offered.

One of my biggest DVC disappointments these last few years is how the food at many of the nicer restaurants(Olivia's) and the like has taken a nose dive due to both the DDP and FD. The food is so homogenized now. OKW's Olivia's use to have signature foods but they were done away with when these plans came out to allow them to be prepared at their giant food preparation facility near DTD and SSR, I miss these meals. The problem is most folks who do not go on a regular basis like us will never miss them and have no idea how good the food once was. Its all profit driven now and I know that is suppose to be a good think but due to this we have cut back on our dining in these signatures restaurants so at least they have lost our business. We usually now get a one bedroom and fix many of our meals and only eat at the nicer places maybe once or twice during a visit...smjj

smjj, when Olivia's lost it's kitchen, it lost us as regular customers. It's been quite a few years now since they took away the kitchen and chef at Olivia's, and now we just never eat there anymore.

I know, we found out the hard way. On one of our stays we noticed the menu was all different. We ask our favorite server what was up and he broke the news to us. Other than a quick breakfast, we have not returned. Its just a shame and what makes it more is new folks going down do not know what they are missing. However,I bet the Disney bean counters are happy...smjj

No worries ... but ...

With two trips per year you should really look into DVC :rotfl:.

hahaha trust me, i'd love to! but this upcoming one is the last one for at least 5 years... or until the fiance decides she wants to go again.

Five years is a long time! Free dining could definitely be gone by then.;) Sorry, I hope you took that as a tease, because that's how it was meant.

5 years is a long time. I predict 6-7 months after that last trip and she'll have the bug to return, Particularly with the weather we experienced this last winter, if that keeps up (and probably will)

Boy, do I agree with that statement! We just sat out at the baseball game last night in 40 degree weather with the wind blowing and the snow falling. :scared1:

BUT...It's a promo that has drastically changed the quality of what we used to get at WDW for fine dining. Nothing fine left there anymore. Even places like Jiko and Artist Point have been hit with the dumbing down of the menu, and are no longer "special". That wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't continue to charge higher prices for the now reduced quality of the meals. I along with many others are blaming FD for that dumbing down. Even the counter service places have lost quality.

We no longer look forward to making ADRs, and the past two trips, we have made very limited ADRs ahead, and mostly dined in our villa or off site. We still go to Teppan Edo multiple times a trip, but last time we even skipped our usual Artist Point and Jiko because they were no longer as enjoyable as they used to be.

The higher prices are also to cover the food they're giving away....so basically WE are the ones paying for free dining. :(

Does anyone know exactly when the menus changed as we were there last May and Jiko, Citricos, and Yachtsman still had some signature dishes? Starting to get disappointed as we just booked our ADRs for Food and Wine at all the usuals and might cancel and move to Swan/Dolphin rants if they no longer offer the quailty and selection.

sadly, this is what i'm expecting. i'm trying to convince her to at least wait until the FL expansion is done. i've also nixed a WDW honeymoon, but i'm open to a Disney Cruise :)

i've created a monster, she had never been before - so i suggested we go. now the rest of the world doesnt exist!

...sorry to take this OT!

Olivia's changed about 5 years ago, maybe longer. They had signature pasta and fish dinners. Sadly they are all gone now and replaced with for lack of a better term, glorified fast food prepared ahead of time in the Disney kitchens located near SSR. We will ocassionally eat a breakfast there but other than that it is a mere shell of what it once was, looks the same and thats it.....smjj

Higher prices on what? Food? Admission/passes, Rooms, cost of Tee shirts? Certainly not DVC dues.

I really don't see how free dining is costing me anything for others to partake in other than reducing choices on the menus. Food prices will go up due to inflation. The only place I know of that had a huge price jump was at Trail's End.

Regardless, I did vote to get rid of Free dining. Glad Disney is doing well with it, but the masses of people waiting at the restaurants on free dining days is scary. We eat in more.
