Political - Are you gonna boycott Bruce!?!?!

Aloha!:wave2:

Just had to wish SHELLE of SHELLE&DAVE much luck and happiness....Oh! And a small warning, also....my DH is ABSOLUTELY the biggest BRUCE fan ever and it HAS NOT BEEN EASY!:( To paraphrase the late Princess Diana...There have been 3 people in this marriage: Me, DH & BRUCE!!!!!

Seriously, BRUCE IS an addiction, if you haven't realized this already. So be prepared....we would have moved to FLA to live near WDW (my addiction) long ago, but DH won't move out of NJ til BRUCE does!

No, I'm NOT kidding!

Best wishes and have a MAGICAL time in WDW. ;) ;) ;)

For me one of the most admirable things about Bruce is that he speaks out on what he stands for. I can respect that whether I agree or not:D

Yes, I will never attend another bruce concert. I have been to 8 but I do not feel he has the right to dump his political views on a paying audience.

Hey Rose, I like your style. And you do make a good point about Elton probably not being a Bush supporter. And I wouldn't care if he did make ONE statement at his concert and left it at that.

But if I can ever afford to see him, Elton John had better sing his patootie off at that concert till he can't sing any more!! :teeth:

(By the way, I'll pass on the Wayne Newton tickets, even though his politics are probably closer to mine. But Tom Jones, well, I'd consider THAT as a viable option!)

Have a pleasant evening!

Wow, this thread's gotten a lot of activity. :) I just have to ask, beachbaby, how could you not feel his "political views" were not already being "dumped" in your lap, since many of his songs express those viewpoints in the first place? Did you plug up your ears when he sang those particular songs at the 8 concerts you've already attended? I know that seems flip, and admittedly it is a bit, but stating you'll never go to another of his concerts when clearly his music is already political....I just don't get it?

I mentioned before I'm not a huge Bruce fan, and its true....however, I've always felt a particular kinship with him because he and I share the same hometown (Freehold, NJ....my mom and uncle actually went to high school with him....LOL my closest brush with fame, I guess). Sometimes when I hear his songs (particularly "My Hometown") it makes me shiver a little, because I can picture the streets and places he's talking about.

Big aside, I know...LOL...but that tune has been going through my head since this thread started!

I don't want to cause any hard feelings against the guy, but Elton John has spoken out about this very subject recently. . .

Elton attacks 'censorship' in US

Elton John has said stars are scared to speak out against war in Iraq because of "bullying tactics" used by the US government to hinder free speech.

"There's an atmosphere of fear in America right now that is deadly. Everyone is too career-conscious," he told New York magazine, Interview.

Sir Elton said performers could be "frightened by the current administration's bullying tactics".

The singer likened the current "fear factor" to McCarthyism in the 1950s.

"There was a moment about a year ago when you couldn't say a word about anything in this country for fear of your career being shot down by people saying you are un-American," he told the magazine. . . "

For the record, while I understand where he's coming from and am no fan of Bush, I don't agree that it's him or the government causing that atmosphere but rather some Bush supporters. .

Mai Ku Tiki,

We've already discussed our next vacation and it won't be to WDW. It will probably be to NJ to see Asbury Park and the bar that Bruce played at....something Pony. I asked him if he realizes he is probably not going to see Bruce there and he defensively said, "Yeah, I know!"

Is your DH a member of the same message group? They trade concert cds. DF has a ton of them. He has probably 20 or 30 different concerts. They all sound the same to me...but whatever! PM me if you want info about it. I don't mind his addiction as long as he doesn't make me listen to Bruce for very long. I can handle a couple of songs, but I really don't want to listen to a whole cd. :D

I think it's a sad commentary when someone wants to try and ruin a person's career simply because they disagree with their political views.

Ok, then vote for Bush.

The Stone Pony. Great little club.

I don't care what Elton John says about anything as long as he sings! I missed the one chance I had to see him not too long ago and if and when I get another one, I'm there!

Ok, then vote for Bush.

For that career, I'll make an exception...;)

The freakin' price of concert tickets would have more to do with not going than who a person is.

if a performer could commit to keeping their political views quiet during a concert, I'd go see anyone. But I go to be entertained, not pelted with someone's view that I have paid $75 bucks to go see.

I am dying to get ahold of tickets for the concert with the Boss, the dixie chicks, etc.

Uhhh. . you all do know these concerts are specifically fund raisers and not part of any regular concert tour, right?

Or did Rush tell you that Springsteen was advertising it as a Bush Rally to lure you in and then locking the doors and forcing you to watch Dennis Kuchinch speeches while he played the harmonica for 3 hours?

;)

I read this a while ago, too. And, as an administration supporter, I was dismayed when I read it. However, I do appreciate that you recognize that Bush and our government, itself, aren't responsible.

Sarcasm aside, what Bush supporters do you blame for this atmosphere. To be honest, and trying to be very objective, i don't see this at all. Could you give a few examples?

Off the top of my head, the ones who called in with death threats to the Dixie Chicks and threatened to kill the new born baby of one of them all because of one sentence Natalie Maines said saying she was ashamed Bush was from the same state they were.

Then Clear Channel refusing to play their songs on country stations across the country, and some dee-jays organizing "CD smashing" smashing parties of their music.

Over one sentence that wasn't that terrible. . .

Also more recently some theatre owners who atvertised showing Farenheit 9/11 when it came out reported recieving death threats and threats to burn down their theatres if they went through with it.

No sarcasm. . I just think sad incidents like these is what Elton was talking about and I can see why he's freaked out about it.. . personally, I'm just disgusted.

Well, there are nuts everywhere--regarding the threats to the Dixie Chicks, which I didn't know about. Bush gets death threats, as well, from people opposing his views.

Regarding Clearchannel: We should all be able to express our opinions. Clearchannel is not funded with taxpayers' money, so that company, just like us here, have a right to express their views, too.
Same goes for theater owners, I think. If it's a publicly held company, I guess they'll have to deal with their shareholders. And, again, we all have a right to frequent or not frequent those places of business.

I remember that there were those same issues with Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ, as well.

I agree Kendra. . that's why I said I disagreed it was the government's fault or Bush's. . but I still think all of that was a gross over-reaction to one mildly disrespectful comment about a politician and the Bush supporters who engaged in any of it should be ashamed of themselves.

If you beleive in free speech, then you need to support it even if you don't like it.

:)
