DH and I decided we are just plain nosey and would love to have a police scanner. We found 1 store, Radio Shack, that carried them and they only had 1. It was a handheld for $109.00.

Any ideas where else to look and what to look for? Is handheld better or tabletop? Really do not want to go much higher than $100.00 since it is just for fun and for our inquisitive nature (politically correct way to say "nosey".

A defendant I am prosecuting was listening to the police dispatch frequency on his smart phone when he was arrested. Perhaps there's an app for that.

We had a tabletop when my husband was a police officer. I loved being able to hear him talk while he was away from the house. Enjoy it! It can get very addicting and fun but scary, too.

I think we will enjoy it also. My phone is an antique according to my grandchildren so not apps for me.

I wonder if online ordering would be a good idea since only 1 could be found where we live.

Happy New Year from one prosecutor to another!

My nephew (volunteer fireman) is buying another one due to the police stations here are going digital and the one he has won't pick up the calls so you might want to check that out before buying one.

Just make sure it is digital . Ours isn't and
Our local stuff does not come thru. It is on
Our list to upgrade

Back in the "Old Days" when I was "On the Job" scanners were all the rage for citizens to listen to us. Nowadays most call info is sent to the patrol cars via their laptops so there is not as much chatter as in the "Old Days". As in you may hear officers calling in when they arrive, but miss the initial call and location. My wife refused to listen when I was on patrol as "something bad may happen to you".

After I left the force I got involved in the local EMS squad and the initial call was broadcast over the air but sensitive info was sent over scrambled radios to the hospital. I left that 12 years ago so that may have changed over the years too.

you can listen to police scanners online :)

I just found a local channel online.
I live right next to a major road and hear sirens frequently, so this may help figure out what's going on.

DS has a bearcat hand held scanner. It was about $90 on Amazon. It says Nascar on it, but he can get police and fire on it. He also listens to the stuff online (radio reference). The website works on a delay.

My Dh avid police/ fire scanner listener as former fire chief. We have a Uiden for family room, ap for her iphone, and ap in his kindle for when he is his man cave! He really likes the apps best !:rotfl:

FYI, you can listen to almost any police scanner in the country for free online at the website http://www.radioreference.com/ Once you get there click 'live audio' and next choose your state, followed by your county. Then scroll down and click the speaker icon next to the station you wish to listen to. takes a minute to load.

I am listening online right now. Thank you guys so much.

My niece is an EMT dispatcher and volunteer firefighter so I will check with her about digital signal in our area.

This is fun listening as I play on the computer.

Did you also post this link back in hurricane season? I know I got it from here on the DIS, and wanted to give a big thanks to the person who posted it. :goodvibes) Great site!

It was very interesting listening to the info from the areas being affected by tropical storm conditions, while waiting to see if anything was coming our way.
