This thread just reminded me that at our July 4th parade not only did the soldiers get a standing ovation as they marched by but so did the police and firemen and it warmed my heart.

I have great respect for the police and firemen and of course our soldiers too and I wouldn't be upset if they all got special discounts but I voted no as well.

IMHO, police and firefighters are very important and do a dangerous, wonderful job for us all, but it's not exactly the same as being a soldier in Iraq is it? I don't think so.

I think our countries' true heros should be our soldiers, police and firemen, absolutely, and I teach my children to respect them and we pray for them all every night.

I am not opposed to a discount for police and firefighters, however, I do think that before Disney does that, they should implement a senior citizen discounted ticket and raise the age limit for "children" to something more reasonable, like 13 or 15.

That way more grandparents can enjoy Disney with their grandchildren! (No, I am not a senior yet, although I do have "senior moments" :teeth: )

I voted no for the discounts. I'm sure people from various groups can all come up with reasons why they should get discounts. It would be impossible to please everyone.

I love the general room codes, anyone can use them. If someone is willing to buy an AP, then they can take advantage of the AP rates.

I don't think anyone here has said anything about working moms NOT raising their children. What I have said is that SAHMs have the hardest jobs there is. I stand by that. I have been a working mom and a SAHM. A SAHM is much more difficult both mentally and physically. There have been days over the years that I have honestly felt like quitting being a SAHM and going back to the easier working life. Of course everyone has their own opinion and this is mine.

ITA!

A SAHM has NO time off from her chosen job...my DH, however, gets 9a to 5p off from the parenting job and he doesn't get why I want to get away on my own sometimes before I go crazy...but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

HenDuck - so true, the senior ticket and raising the child's upper age limit. I have senior moments myself:confused: but mostly I act like a child:Pinkbounc

I just want to caution everyone on their postings about motherhood. EVERYONE wants to be a great parent and each of does the best we can. Working, or staying at home.

Teachers can have it real bad, stay at home moms deserve to be honored by society by raising children themselves rather than in a day care (please no flaming about day care, I'm not saying one is better). We could list valuable things about EVERY profession. Each of us provides an important link in our societal chain. No doubt about that.

I was responding to this statement. It seems to imply that only SAHMs are raising their children.

Well, gee, I didn't even think of raising the kids' age limit. Yes, yes, yes. . .that would definitely be desired!
However, I still vote a yes on the police and firefighters. And, although it's not exactly the same thing as fighting in Iraq, it does have the potential to be as deadly. And, all of these groups put their lives on the line daily--whether they face gunfire or not.

I apologize if I said anything to offend working parents! I did not mean to offend anyone.

Like I said, the hardest job there is is being a good parent, whether there is a stay at home parent or working parent.
I've been a SAHM for almost 5 years and I never understood why there is so much animosity between SAHM and working Moms and vice versa. Every person need to make the decision that is best for their family and themselves.

Also, I totally agree that the best way to offer discounts are to offer them to everyone with the room codes and special discounted packages they offer. This way everyone has a fair shot at getting a good rate.

I work FT from home and have 3 daughters, one of which will be turning two this Sept, so I am theoretically an at home mom as well. My DH is a policeman and just hit his 20 year mark as a volunteer firefighter. Can I get a larger discount soley based on the stress factor involved here? LOL...but this is truely my life...
Maybe WDW should give me a discount to get away on my own  Oh, did I mention that I'm also an AP holder????

Well Said Stimpy!

I work and I consider my job my "other" full-time job.

I am the wife of a police officer, I am not sure weather or not a discount to Disney is something that I would care to much about. What would be nice is if they had a Community servant week or two. That would include the officers and firefighters and social workers.

There are a couple of things that struck me in the posts so far.
1 yes they did go into that line of work knowing that there were risks and little bennefit monitarily. BUT I am thankfull that they have the guts to do so. And there are rewards. such as finding the lost children. Taking drugs that are hidden in the kids toy boxes or in their closets, and getting them out of harms way. Arresting the abuser, being sexual or battery. Those are some of the things that make my husband proud of the job he has chosen to do.

2. No being in law enforcement is not like being in Iraq. You see the officers don't know from day to day or hour to hour where the bad guys are. There is no one mapping out the best and safest rout to take while they search the dark building and they often don't have some one watching their backs. They must go it alone and help for the best. PLEASE PLEASE do not think that for one moment I don't hurt for the men and women over seas making it better for me here. To them I can only hope and pray for their safety and return. And when they get here I will salute them and thank them and my huband will watch out for them and their family.

3. Stay at home mothers are to be praised for having the abbility to stay at home with their kids. And working mothers should also have the same. Becouse my husband is in law enforcement I must also work. I take pride in the fact that I can do that full time and still raise respectful heathy children.

Boy, oh, boy. If the debate board was still alive, I'd bet that is where this would be headed.

I just wish that everyone would have a little respect for all working people and those who want to work, but are unable to.

I'd love to see the Koby Bryants and Dennis Rodmans of the world get little or no respect because they surely haven't done much to deserve it. But they get paid lots of bucks, have rotten attitudes about other people and kids want to be like them. Can anyone see what's wrong with this picture?

Police Officer, fire fighters, teachers, nurses, etc, all have my respect because they have chosen a tough job, they like what they do (for the most part) and do a good job at doing what they do. Working people who try to make their lives and the lives of others better, deserve the most respect in the world.

(this is where I would put a clapping smiley if one existed)

Well Said Deb & Bill. I still like the crack about charging more to money grubbing professions! Still cracks me up!
:hyper:

A B S O L U T E L Y !!!!!!

DISNEY SHOULD GIVE FIREMAN & COPS THE SAME DISCOUNTS.

FULLTIME COPS & FIREMAN ARE THE 'MILITARY' ON THE HOME FRONT.

THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE IN THE SERVICES PERFORMED...ONLY THE LOCATION IN THE WORLD THEY ARE PERFORMED!

:earsboy: :earsboy:

I'm a teacher. I just started teaching again this year when DS started 1st grade. I decided to be a SAHM w/him until he finished his Kindergarten year in school.

I chose my career. Nobody assigned it to me or forced me into it. I do not look for accolades, freebies, discounts, etc. b/c of the excuse that I teach "the future". It is what I wanted to do. It is what I selected to do. Why should I get a discount and not everyone else who chooses a career path that helps others out?!

I might not put myself in the line of danger as a Kindergarten teacher (although, you might be surprised!) ... but I do give those who will choose to be in the military, the police or fire dept. a start in their education. I don't need a medal or a discount or anything else. I have the self-gratification of knowing I make a difference in childrens lives.

As for the discount at the Swan/Dolphin ... I can do better price-wise at the All Stars. Sure it might not be as "ritzy" ... but I'm only sleeping there!!!!

And, I have to wonder ... pre-9/11, how many would be saying no to a police/fire fighter discount?!

I love and support my Firefighter/Paramedic husband too!! I agree about the fact that law enforcement and firefighters were well supported for about a year after 9/11 and now that has changed. Not sure why?

By the way, I'm a stay at home mom to 3 beautiful children. A discount for us would be nice, but we don't look for or expect discounts.

I don't show.... seems like 9/11 shook us all up, for a little while. Seeing the buildings come down like that, what a shock. Pre that day, we had a couple of really bad cop incidents hit national news. It's unusual for a good cop story to hit the national news. We form our opinions by what we see. Sometimes its in person, sometimes its only on the news.

I hope you are wrong DAXX with all my heart. 9/11 just brought to the forefront of people's minds the heroic act it is just for those men to go to work every day. I would hate to think that no one cared for them or what their lives where like before that day.

Nobody is asking for a discount. Just testing the climate. Somehow it seems alot like the seagulls in Finding Nemo; there's a discount "mine, mine, mine".

This subject can be touchy and cause resentment toward people in the Fire/Law Enforcement community. With that said I would like to add to the discussion from the point of view of a Deputy Sheriff.

To start with the correct approach is important. As many reasons people have for getting into these two professions, discounts or free perks are not one of them. I would never take away from anyone who works in Civil Service or Community Service fields. There is a distinct difference in the scope and depth of all the services mentioned here and Fire/Law Enf. To understand this I would say you have to walk in my shoes. The benefits a discount would make are wonderful. I prefer to handle any discounts or free services with a humbled appreciation. I never ask for considertion when I am eating or purchasing items. Should a discount be offered to me I "Graciously" accept. I am not owed this, but yes it helps. It isn't easy on the salary I bring home, but I provide the neccesities my family needs. We do get a few luxuries and I put in the extra time on my off duty days for them. Days spent away from my family. We all in some way deserve a reward for getting through life and helping others along the way.

I voted "yes", but it's not what defines my idea of being appreciated.

In closing let me say I am glad to be able to add to the topic and feel quite sure intelligent and open minded rebuttal will follow if any.

not sure why?

Hmmm, I'm afraid I'm opening a can of worms, but I think the reason that people lost the respect for firefighters and police a year after 9/11 has to do with how politically divided the country has become. It seems to me that those supporting this administration, including how it has handled the War on Terror, support these civil servants as well as support the troops in Iraq. Those who absolutely loathe this administration seem not to have the same respect for the firefighters and cops that they did immediately after 9-11.

I bet you that some people will write here and deny this--tell me that's not true. But, I also believe that if we backtracked on those who stated "no discounts" or "yes, discounts", and asked them their political leanings, we might find that to be absolutely true.

I'm not sure that anyone wants this to be a political forum, but this is what I believe--and have seen personally.
