I just found out that the horrible mutation on my wrist is due to a brush with poison ivy this weekend. Anyone have any expereience with poison ivy rashes or have advice on remedies?

This is actually freaking me out and it itches really bad too!

Benadryl will help with the itch. You can also buy benadryl cream to put on the area. There is also cream called Zanfel that dries it up quickly. It's quite expensive ($40) but it supposedly works wonders.

Try to scratch as little as possible and keep it away from your face. You could wrap it loosely while you're doing things but it's best to let the air get to it I believe. You may want to put something on it at night because you could scratch it while you're sleeping otherwise.

I'm so sorry that you've got this. Get some good lotion as the previous poster suggested and other than that, time is the only thing that helps.

Thank you for your kind help, meeshi and Planogirl.

It certainly will be a challenge to not scratch it.

But my husband is so sweet--he has volunteered to rush out and buy anything that will help me feel better.

Take care!

I found it at walmart..it's about $4 a tube but worked wonders for my poison ivy last year..I had tried everything and was still itching like crazy..you put this on kind of thick and it worked amazingly for me!..good luck!

There is also cream called Zanfel
Is this prescription or OTC? I'm very sensitive to poison ivy, and usually take about month to get over it completely. Hopefully it will be a long time until I get it again, but I would be willing to try something new, even expensive, if I need to.

If you can stand it, try sleeping with some loose clean cotton socks on. It will prevent you from scratching in your sleep. (bad news there).

I have a co-worker who swears by the Zanfel cream, and it is QUITE expensive, but it works like a charm.

Good Luck

Debbie<---who has had MORE than her fair share of brushes with Poison Ivy, and knows what you are going through!

If more develops due to milder exposure and you're feeling miserable by tomorrow consider getting a prescription for a steroid.

Ok, this is going to show what a comic nerd I am.

When I saw the title of this post, I thought you were yelling out HELP for Poison Ivy.

Sheesh. I need to get a life.

This is crazy but my Dh used Bleach to get rid of his. yes it stung like the dickens but it was dried up by morning and gone 1 day later.

He found this out on accident but used it again when it happend. And again it worked.

My late DMIL used to swear by Ban liquid roll on. I like a poduct called IvyArrest.

Just like lynxstch said... Try Ivarest.
Worked wonders for my teen a couple of times!
Good luck and try wearing gloves to bed, so you won't scratch in your sleep!

My DH would tell you to scratch the heck out of it, even so it bleeds, and the story gets worse...then dab it with hydrogen peroxide. OUCH!

He lived on a farm surrounded by woods and it was his job in the summer to cut back the poison ivy so it wouldn't take over everything else. After being infected so many times he learned that it's best to stop before it spreads.

But I would listen to all the other kind DISers remedies and ignore my DH's theories. It'll be gone before you know it! :)

the first time i got poison ivy i had to see my DR cuz i made it look really badd and he put me on some prescription stuff that worked really well. i really wish i would remember the name right now.

It's OTC, I found it at CVS and it was about $40 but DH was willing to try anything that would help.

Here's a link to a picture of the package:
