Points Rigamarole - cancellations / banking / changing

Hello all, really hoping someone can answer this asap as I'm looking to book but things are "in the air".

I understand the cancellation policy with banked/borrowed points and all. What I'm curious about is what if I cancel a booking in THIS use year, leaving points available to bank. But I've already booked something in the NEXT use year with those points.

Can I BANK the points from THIS use year, call member service and have them CHANGE the reservation in the NEXT use year to use the points I've BANKED from this year INSTEAD of the ones from next use year? ( That way, I can bank THOSE points into the following year ).

Basically trying to minimize any chance of losing points and/or reservations based on an uncertain vacation future.

I believe the answer is yes, provided you cancel this year's reservation soon enough to bank the points.

If you booked during the home resort advantage period, and the points you want to bank are not the same resort, they might not switch them out. You'd have to cancel and rebook.

Okay, well the idea is hopefully that I would have everything at our home resort... so I hope it's all good.

Yes. 100%. Have done this exact thing many times in past. Just call MS. They are extraordinarily helpful when it comes to this. They are very fast and understanding with point reservation reallocations.

MS is very helpful.

I have had situations where I booked reservations with borrowed points and with current use year points and I had to cancel the reservation made with the borrowed points. They have switched the points on the remaining reservation to use the borrowed points so that I could then bank the current year points.

Yes, this is allowable.

Yes, MS has done this for me several times. The only exception is if you booked the next UY stay during the home resort priority period it has to be that home resort points (in case you have multiple resorts).

You also can do the point reallocation yourself online. You would bank the points and then go in to modify the existing reservation. Just select to modify to the same dates and then when you go thru to book it should take the newly banked points first for the reservation. It won't like like it will but after you finalize the "new" booking you'll see that it uses the banked first.

Oh! Well thanks for that! Can that also work for adding a day? traditionally when wanting to ADD a day to an existing reservation, I've always called MS. But if I can do it online, I'd prefer that...

Yes! Select modify and then search on the dates for the entire reservation. It includes the availability of what you already have booked and will add the extra day (assuming it's available of course). The ability to modify is a really nice thing done with the website.
