I am interested in renting points for a DVC resort this Sept. One of the members of my party has some health concerns, so I'm wondering what the cancellation/changes policies between renter and rentee. As I understand it, if I cancel 30 days prior that member gets full use of their points. I know this is a private transaction with some trust required on both sides. Would I be expected to find a substitute renter or would the DVC member just find someone else and provide a refund?

Because this is a private transaction all renters have different policies on cancellations. If you found one with a 30 day policy, congrats because many have an absolutely NO refund policy. Most people would advise an individual against renting points unless they were certain that there would not be the possiblity of cancellation. Good luck to you

completely depends upon what you and the person you rent from agree too.

get a contract so you both understand what the rules are....

at 30 days the points go in holding - so you would need to cancel at least 32 days before -

No refund from me.

I rented to YOU.

sorry.....

If you hadn't rented them from me, 6,7,9,11 mths prior, I could have sought another renter. Now you cancel and I have 32 days to find another renter?

nope.......

Have to agree with Boat. With the fantastic savings, some times as much as 50% over what Disney charges you give up some of the advantages of paying more and the cancellation policy is one.

To me the problem is that I have invested my time booking your stay, and now that the renter has backed out I have to now seek another renter and spend yet more time. Also when i rented the first time it was 11,9,7 mths out and my points were worth peak value, and now 30 days prior to them being lost, they have MUCH less value.

nope......

no refund.

By the same token, I would NEVER call a renter 30 days prior to the vacation and tell them "I have decided to take my daughter to the boardwalk for the week, so I am refunding your money, and you will need to find another person to rent from"

Seems to me that you would simply divide up the total costs among the number going. If, originally, you had 6 people going and now have 5, divide the cost by 5 vs. 6. :teacher:

If you are saying it this one person doesn't go, none of you will go, I'd go a different route in planning a vacation: such as dealing directly with Disney which has an easier time reabsorbing your cancellation into its inventory.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I haven't done this before so I need to be sure of what I am getting into before I do it. Now I can share the information with the rest of my party.

Some members will allow you to reschedule the vacation - again it depends on the member and the status of the points used to make the original reservation.

Even if you do not plan to cancel, it is always a good idea to ask what happens if you do need to change or cancel a reservation. Written agreements help to ensure the same understanding on both sides of the transaction.

Best wishes -

There is a huge problem with "full use of their points" and that is the use year issue.

My points are April use year. Which means they expire on March 31st. If you have a reservation with me for late Febuary, and cancel in early January, I only have until the end of March to use or re-rent those points.

You are best off looking for a owner who has a use year that is just previous to your trip (and August or September use year for a September trip) - for instance, my April use year is great for an April or May trip. They may be more willing to be more lienient with a cancellation policy. I wouldn't refund a dime if someone cancelled late in my use year.

If you expect this will happen, you may want your contract to reflect contigencies. i.e. you may put in that you will be responsible to sublet your reservation, but the owner agrees to change the name on the reservation for a $50 fee.

I agree with the others. You need to call CRO and book a room-only reservation if you're not sure that the trip will happen.

Like many who rent their points, I agree with the "no refund" policy. Most of the best travel deals are non-refundable; on most hotel chain's web sites, for example, their best rates are their internet-only rates, and they are non-refundable once you book them.

I think this is a MAJOR misperception on the part of many renters. The assumption that because the member gets the points back in their account if canceled by 31 days out, means the member has no risk, IS SIMPLY UNTRUE. Points renting is not something to do unless the person renting understands enough to have reasonable expectations. This statement alone would show that a renter does not understand what they, or the member, are getting into. I won't elaborate on the additional costs, risks or limitations that the member has in this situation unless asked.

Interesting new perspective - at least for me, LOL. I have never thought to compare renting points to bidding for a room on PriceLine or Hotwire, LOL!

Best wishes -

I don't do refunds .I can make a change based on availability but has to be 32 days prior to arrival and again it depends when the points expire or the renter can try to make a re rent and I will change the name for a 50$$ fee

This isn't only for sites like Priceline and Hotwire. I've found this on major hotel sites as well. Book it for the internet rate and you're locked in. No cancellation.

This is actually the best way to look at renting points. If I ever have to rent out some of my points, it will definitely be no refunds.
