Our family is currently exploring buying into DVC. I have been trying to do some research on how the system works and I understand some aspects of DVC better than other areas.

One of the things I am trying to understand is options around obtaining extra points in a given UY. I have a decent understanding of the banking option and the borrowing from future years. I also read that you can buy up to 24 additional one-time use points from Disney for $15 each.

Can someone give me an overview or direct me to an area that describes more details on exchanging one time use points between DVC members (is it called transferring?) I am really interested in how this works.

Thanks

Transfers, for the most part, are simple. You find another owner who is willing to transfer you some points. Once that happens, that owner calls MS and asks that the points be put in to your account. They are now yours to do with as you wish.

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY. You can only transfer in or out of your membership once per UY. For example, you want find points that are 2011 UY points--that would count as your 2011 UY transfer.

It is against DVC policy to accept money for transfers, although people do it all the time, just don't mention it when calling MS.

The biggest thing with a transfer is you want to make sure that you get points that can be used for your time of travel. If you secure points that have a UY that is still within its banking window, you can still bank those points.

It is a great way to boost your account in the short term. We are thinking of doing this instead of adding on more points. We need them for the next few years but not sure if I will need them after that. What I will do is seek a transfer large enough to cover me for a few years.

Good luck!

Disney will allow one transfer of points in your use year from another member OR for you to transfer points to another member in a use year. Basically, it is only one transfer per use year, either points coming in or going out.

There is a rental board here is the DVC section where you can make contact with other owners for doing this, however keep in mind that Disney does not get involved if something goes wrong or if you mention that money is involved. It is an arrangement between you and the other owner. There are sticky notes that clarify essential info regarding posting threads for renting and transferring of points at the top of the rental/transfer board.

Key things to keep in mind are the expiration dates for the points and when they need to be used or banked etc.

Hope this helps!

And also, if points transferred to your account are from a different DVC resort than you own then those points cannot be combined with your points for a reservation until 7 month booking window, so if you want to take advantage of priority booking window at your home resort you'd need to transfer in points from a member who owns at same resort as you. And as Sandi and Dee posted be sure the transferred points will be valid for dates you plan to travel.

:)

There is a document called Home Resort Rules and Regulations that you can obtain from a guide. Or when you are member it can be downloaded on the MS website. Here's the information regarding transfers:

Transferring Home Resort Vacation Points Between Club Members.
Transfers allow a Club Member to assign all or a portion of his or her Home Resort Vacation Points to another Club Member. Transfers are subject to the following restrictions:

1) Both Club Members must be current on their Annual Dues and monthly payments (if applicable), and any other outstanding balances, including, but not limited to, fees associated with any exchange programs, miscellaneous services booked by Member Services in connection with Club Member reservations, and any incidental charges and/or balances due in relation to DVC Resort stays, in order to give or receive a Transfer. Both Club Members must be closed in order to participate in a Transfer.

2) All Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points retain the Use Year of the transferring Club Member and expire at the end of the transferring Club Member's Use Year, unless they are Banked.

3) Once Banked, Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points will expire at the end of the Transferring Club Member’s next Use Year, unless they are used. In addition, Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points cannot be un-Banked or returned to their original Use Year.

4) The Club Member who is Transferring the Home Resort Vacation Points to another Club Member is still responsible for the Annual Dues payment on those Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points.

5) Banked or Borrowed Home Resort Vacation Points may not be Transferred.

6) Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points may not be Borrowed or returned to the Transferring Club Member.

7) If a Transfer occurs between Club Members from different Home Resorts, the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points retain all the reservation rights of the Transferring Member.
• The recipient of the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points may use them to make a reservation at the Transferring Member's Home Resort during the Home Resort Priority Period, or at other qualified DVC Resorts after the Home Resort Priority Period and any other applicable priority periods.
• The recipient of the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points would not be able to use the Transferred Home Resort Vacation Points at his or her Home Resort until the end of his or her Home Resort Priority Period and any other applicable priority periods.

8) Transfer requests may be made by phone and must be confirmed in writing, by mail, fax or E-mail, to Member Services. DVCMC will not assist Members in finding another party for a Transfer activity.

9) Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity.

10) During a given Use Year, only one (1) Transfer per Club Member or Club membership, either as Transferee or Transferor, will be permitted.

11) Only Club Members who have closed on their purchase agreement are eligible to transfer Home Resort Vacation Points.

I think one important item to remember is Number 9, members are prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity. You can have your membership revoked if it's violated. But it is okay to rent points from another member.

It does seem pretty straight forward. Thanks everyone for all the information. It seems like using these boards is a greta way to get straight answers to my question(s)

When you are transfering in there are lots of "misinterpretations" that occur so it is best to ask for a supervisor if it is anything but the most standard transfer
