Can I take a carry-on and a pocketbook or is that like having 2 carry-ons? We are taking more carry-ons this trip due to DS's air mattress and his backpack with books and homework and my other DS's dvd player kids snacks and all my travel info and our jackets, so everyone has a carry-on this trip. Thanks, Linda :)

I don't know what a 'pocket book' is, but the personal item is like a small laptop case, or a handbag, or what I read called a 'purse' here.

It is not two 22 inch bags, as some people here seem to think.

The personal item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.

So you can take a carry-on and a personal item? And yes a pocketbook is a handbag and it's not a big one and it could fit under my seat. Thanks for the info Linda

Many airlines do allow a carryon and personal item (purse, smaller laptop bag...that sort of thing). Some airlines do in general but if you're on a puddle-jumper type plane for part of the travel you might only be allowed to bring one into the plane.

hee hee. "Pocketbook" must be a Jersey/Philly thing. We have often used that term interchangably with purse but I guess it's a regional thing.

If I plan to carry on a bag, I put my purse (a small one, not my everyday one) inside a tote bag. This way I can fit other things also (ipod, dvd players etc.) but it still counts as 1 personal item.

I'm from Mass. and I carry a "pocketbook" too! I always take that and a backpack or VB big tote bag on with me.

Another pocketbook carrying female. I always use the term purse for a small evening bag - similar to a clutch. Pocketbooks are everyday bags.

Good thing about being smashed in the middle and get all of the terms.. I guess I never thought of purse / pocketbook / handbag wouldnt be the same everywhere..

Guess it's like pop or soda, couch or davenport etc etc

I take a tote bag for my under the seat carry-on, and shove my purse into that. That way I can have a bin carry-on too. :)

As a male I have always used the term pocket book and wallet interchangeably. So for me, I would take a carry on, a personal item (camera/laptop) and a pocket book/wallet since that fits on my body.

What's a davenport? I've never heard of that except the town in FL. :goodvibes

I am a life long New Englander and I often use pocketbook as well.

I bring a tote bag that can fit under the seat and I put my purse INTO it. I also put in the things that I want easy access to, like snacks and a book. The tote qualifies as my personal item and I carry a small carry-on bag as well, but that goes in the overhead.

It may not be a big issue, but coming back it could be - people always seem to carry a lot more back than going down. Wow - guess it is all the stuff we buy when we are down there!

Anyway, we were about half boarded coming back and they started asking people to volunteer to gate check items, at no cost, because of the larger size of bags coming back. They still were within the requirements for a carry-on; it just seemed like now everyone had one and the flight was completely sold out. We were lucky, because we were sitting in the back of the plane and boarded relatively early - my two traveling companions had virtually everything glass they could find down there - so we were concerned about checking anything.

Yea, throw sofa in there, and also I think somewhere calls them chesterfields, but again, I think that is a style, but still applied the same way :)

Kind of like everyone calls tissue.... KLEENEX around here. Kleenex is simply a brand name.

My grandmother always called it a Davenport..... it was just another term for couch.....

Kleenex is another term for tissue. Yes, it started as a brand name but, if I remember some dim info from a teacher in my distant past, Kleenex lost the rights to the name because it was ruled by some court somewhere to be a part of the lexicon of the nation. There are other examples of this but haven't had enough coffee to think of any right now.;)

And here in my neck of Connecticut its:

Pocketbook
Couch
Kleenex
Soda
Grinders (although Subway is eating into that one:rotfl2:)

I want to play!

Here in Western Michigan we call them

Purse
Sofa
Kleenex
Pop
Subs

And when I go to take ibuprofen I say Advil. Much easier.
