I HATE HATE HATE the whole car-buying experience!
I'm off to do some research on some new wheels! Everyone have a great day!
I LOVE the car buying experience! If I lived close to you I would go with you and help you research it all. I wish I could buy another vehicle just for the experience!
When I bought my Odyssey, I went to the dealer to look at the different models (was deciding between the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna). I quickly decided on the Ody, based on the fact that I wanted 8 passenger, but wanted a mid-high trim line and the 8 passenger Sienna only came as a lower end trim line. So narrowing that down for me was easy.
After than I needed to decide on the exact trim line, options, color, etc. I went to a dealer for that. Once I decided on all those things, I went online and looked at the dealer inventories within about 2 1/2 hours of our house. The details are online and it's easy to pull up.
I then e-mailed all the dealers (even the ones that didn't have the inventory that I wanted) and told them
exactly what I wanted--every detail. I asked if they had it in inventory, would be getting it, or could get it (I couldn't see what they would be getting, I don't think--or maybe I could, but they could trade with other dealers) and asked what my cost would be, including all delivery fees, taxes, tags, etc, etc. I told them that I was contacting other dealers and wanted a competitive price.
I had some dealers tell me that they had what I wanted and I should come in and we'd work out a price, but I told them I wanted to agree beforehand. I had another one tell me she had just what I wanted in stock and gave me a good price, but I didn't see it in her inventory and turns out it was the wrong color (talked to her on the phone and determined that). Another place gave me a good price, and would have delivered it (they were a couple hours away in PA), but they would had to have traded for it.
Finally, I found a place almost an hour away that was getting the exact van in and I asked if they would honor the other price. He asked for proof and I e-mailed the e-mail exchange and they came close, so we bought that one. When it was all said and done, that salesperson said that I'd gotten that van for cheaper than anyone had ever gotten a van like that for before.

I'm pretty sure he was telling me the truth. My DH told me it was the most painful buying experience for him.
I'd done similar things when buying our last van 5 or so years before, but that was via the phone and also for my DH's car 11 years before via the phone, but the internet makes it SO much easier.
A friend of mine is deciding between the Pilot and the Highlander and I so want to go shopping with her. She doesn't want to bring her DH because he will side with the salesperson and pay what the salesperson wants.
