OK ladies, I need some career advice. So I've been with my firm since I graduated college (a year now) and a few weeks ago, was put on a client in the DC area. So anyways, I got my rating at work (exceptional) which means I'm up for early promotion next year (a year early) if I stay in the NYC office. If I stay on the client down here, I wouldn't be up for early promotion, simply because there are opportunties in the NYC office to step up and take the senior role. I'm happier down here and feel like it's a nice change to get out of NJ (even though I love it) and do something different. I hated working in NYC, but I figure I can just bear it out for a year and then come back if I wanted to. I don't really feel challenged down here, but I have a meeting with the sr. mgr to talk about this.
My coach and seniors in NY think I should head back there but my mom and dad think I should stay where I'm happy since they saw how much working in NYC really drained me mentally and physically (the 1.5 hour commute each way is a killer too). I asked my friends Saturday night and they were split.Oh, and also my friends and family are all up in NJ too.
So, what do you think?![]()
Tim, first let me say that you sound like the kind of employee that I would want working for me, if I actually worked.

Anyway, I was reading your post aloud, and my sister had a great suggestion. She said to talk to the one person you work with/for (a senior person) that you trust and would consider a personal mentor. That is the person who is likely to give you the best advice.
Personally, I agree with others here. You are young. Do what makes you happy? Too often, I have worked with people who were only concerned about getting ahead and they were miserable.
Well, that's my two cents.
