Tim, you are young. Take the happiness while you can. :thumbsup2 But to be a devil's advocate...

If the commute is such a killer is there a chance you could move closer to the city?

Up with a migraine...the kind that doesn't allow me to sleep, leaves me feeling sick, etc. :headache: Took meds, but it will be awhile before they work. :crazy2:
Oh yuck, yuck and double triple and quadruple yuck.

Good morning sunshines :sunny:
There's what starts my morning right. :thumbsup2

Good morning, my pretties.

Tig, I hope your headache dies. I'm plotting some headache serial killing. We'll bury yours next to Paige's. :thumbsup2

I'm babysitting my nephew today for a few hours. He's the same age as Molly, so she'll have a blast. I need to get a LOT of coffee down before he gets here.

First, that sounds like the wicked witch of the West or East or wherever she was from.

Second, I'm all for that.

Third, you will have a headache as well!

Good morning, friends - I am at school today, but PLEASE call me someone if I can do anything for anyone .................
Flurry, you have a heart as big as all outdoors honey.

.......and Koolaid, may you be rid of all sucking ticks at work. :lmao:

Hello, Miss MJ.

Tim, that's a hard decision. I'd be more likely to choose happiness over promotion, BUT... you're young, and making a big advancement in your career now is a great opportunity.

Imagine for a moment that you must take the NYC promotion, that you do not have a choice. How would you feel about it? Would you be excited, or would you be furious?

Paige...my sister is a teacher and that's what she said. :rotfl:

Miss Jas - Yeah, I could move up north and get an apartment, but my goal was to continue living at home until I saved up enough to buy a house. And in NJ, that is not easy. ;)

Oooh, good thought there. I'd be ehhhh towards it. Like "well this something I have to do." (if that makes sense). Not furious, not happy...just ehhh.

snowwwwwwwy...yes. And I'm indecisive so this is fun!

I hear ya, BUT (don't you love the but), so it takes you a little more time to save up for the house, the promotion will mean more money, with more opportunities that could mean more money, so actually living closer could be looked at as an investment. Plus, who wants to live with their parents? ;) :teeth:

Hi Paigey! :yay:

Good morning, friends

Hi Tim, can't remember if we've spoken yet, so HOWDY!

Even though you don't know me at all, I'll jump in on the life-advice bandwagon. :rotfl2: You should always always choose happiness over career longterm, BUT - if you could work in NYC for a year and then come back, is it possible that that temporary sacrifice would add to your long term comfort level? Might it be worth it in the long run?

ETA: Look, Miss J, we were typing our big BUTs at the same time! :rotfl:

My headache is better, but not gone. I can't take more migraine meds, though, so either have to tough it out or go to the dr. If it hurts after I eat I'll see if a vicodin helps any.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. In general, as long as it can work and the advancement would be there eventually, I'd choose happiness. However, a short-term stint at something that isn't perfect if it helps you in the long run isn't so bad. One other thought, though. I assume that you aren't involved with anyone at the moment, but what if that perfect person comes along and he lives in the NYC area and you are hoping to move out of that area. Kind of complicates things.

Good point, Tig. Then again, finding the perfect person in NYC might just make that the happier place. :goodvibes

You'll make the right decision, Tim.

Tig, I'm glad it's letting up a little. I'll take it for you. Send it my way.

Tim, I should say take the happiness over the money....but I have a job I hate because I make a lot of money and can live where I want. Remember that housing costs in this area are no walk in the park either. My suggestion would be to float your resume out to a couple of head hunters, get another firm to go into a bidding war for you and then tell they company you work for that you really want to stay, but you want to be in DC AND get the promotion.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It's refreshing to get advice from a different perspective than IRL friends and a few of my co-workers. Something else to consider, I absolutely hate my job (Big 4 public accounting) but am sticking it out so I can finish the CPA, get certified, promoted, experience, and then look for a different job, so this also weighs in as well. Oh, and if I stay in DC, my firm pays for my apartment/hotel, meals, gym club membership, and flights back home to visit family and friends, so it's not a shabby deal. So anywho, I'll give it some thought, take into account the good advice I have gotten here, and let everyone know what happens. ;)

In other news, hi litebrite! :yay: I think we've crossed paths in other threads. :teeth:

Tig, happy to hear it's slightly better.

I have to get back to work if I want to get out of here by 8 tonight, and try to wean (is that the word I was going for?) myself off the DIS. ;) Oh, but the intern is going to Disney next week, so I was giving her so many tips and advice. It was like Christmas for me.

Morning all!!! :wave2:
Tig I saw you on last night, but the boards were soooooo slow when I tried to post, I gave up and watched Dirty Dancing for the thousandth time.

OK ladies, I need some career advice. So I've been with my firm since I graduated college (a year now) and a few weeks ago, was put on a client in the DC area. So anyways, I got my rating at work (exceptional) which means I'm up for early promotion next year (a year early) if I stay in the NYC office. If I stay on the client down here, I wouldn't be up for early promotion, simply because there are opportunties in the NYC office to step up and take the senior role. I'm happier down here and feel like it's a nice change to get out of NJ (even though I love it) and do something different. I hated working in NYC, but I figure I can just bear it out for a year and then come back if I wanted to. I don't really feel challenged down here, but I have a meeting with the sr. mgr to talk about this.

My coach and seniors in NY think I should head back there but my mom and dad think I should stay where I'm happy since they saw how much working in NYC really drained me mentally and physically (the 1.5 hour commute each way is a killer too). I asked my friends Saturday night and they were split. ;) Oh, and also my friends and family are all up in NJ too.

So, what do you think? :confused3

Ok, I have ADD, how long will you have to stay inthe unhappy place for the promotion? If it is a year, I would suck it up and take the promotion. Then transfer to someplace better.

My step sister is a CPA with PWC, started out with E&Y. She can go wherever she wants. She had to do some crappy assignments for about 2 years, but now she has options.

Tim- I can't offer anymore advice than what has been given. Like the others, where will you be happiest? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
On a side note, I didn't realize how young you are. ;)

Tig- hope the headache clears up for you!

Its rainy here today which I wasn't expecting at all. It sucks and I feel like a truck ran me over. I so hate that my boy reacts to weather.

Oh and I think we made a vacation change for our November trip. We were going to fly but in talking yesterday I think we may drive afterall. We thought that if we leave early Friday morning we could drive to VA to Jeff and Anna's since they will be living there then, spend Saturday with them and then leave early Sunday for Florida. We could stop there too on the way home. That way we can sneak in a visit with them too since they won't be coming up for Thanksgiving.
The other thing I was going to look into was splitting it driving and flying. Drive to VA and then fly to FL from there. I'll have to check into the various options. I told DH they are about 1/2 way. When I mapquested it it was 10 hours 43 minutes here to there. From there to Fl is 10 hours 48 minutes. Can't get more 1/2 way than that!

Morning all!!! :wave2:

You gave up on talking to me and watched Dirty Dancing, huh? :woohoo: THAT sounded funny.

Excellent point!

I didn't catch how old you were NJ?

Guys I have had not had time to read back but wanted to say good morning before I was out for the day. The weekend sucked--more on that later.....Have a sitter coming for some mommy alone time which is awesome!!! DS has a soccer game tonight--he is sooo bad as is the rest of his team, but hey, he is only 7.

Tim--hiya! And I think if you can manage to only be in NJ for a year, that is what I would do. Good career advancement at a young age is setting you up for a promising future. THis is coming from the wife of a guy who made really bad career choices before I came along. We are good now and he is happy in a totally new field--the one he should have been in to begin with--but he is behind other people his age in income and job level.

The rest of ya--you know I lurve you!!
