Plus size formals- where to find proper and cheap ones?

We are booked for a cruise this December and have a wedding this October. I have never had need for a formal attire outside my work life ever. So I went hunting through a lot of online store but none of the ones available look to be made keeping the plus size in mind.

I need something with a bit of sleeves, not amazingly short but not a maxi either. I am even thinking of getting a nice top to be worn over black trousers if the dress thing does not work out. I dont need something that sticks to every curve.

These sites have skinny models for plus size dresses so I have no idea how the dresses look in real life. MOst of them are mother of the bride/groom dresses.

Any ideas?

I have several very nice things that i got at either JC Pennys or Dillards or Macys-im a tall curvy girl who is somewhere between womens and plus-depending on how much i have been working out and how much stress has made me eat. My husband is in the military and we attend about 4 formal events for various things each winter-and my son got married this spring as well. All three of those carry formal wear in plus and misses sizes that is not horrendously priced. Coldwater Creek also has some nice things around the holidays but they are not super formal

Macy's! They have a great selection in their stores for try-ons and they also have plus-sized models online if you prefer to shop that way.

O also found that Lane Bryant has MORE of an evening gown choice online than in the store.

Sydney's Closet. It's one of the only stores in the US that specialize in formalwear for the plus market.

I recently had to buy a last minute dress and didn't want to go all out. I have a closet full of formals that are all mega too big now.

ya thats short for me I really want something kneew height or more. I definitely want a little more sleeve. Picky I know but I need to be confident of carrying the dress to feel good.

Its a cute dress, but isnt formal

Macys does carry formals I have gotten them there before, I have also had luck at JC Pennys and David's Bridal, all have plus side ones

Nordstroms has failed me yet again. Don't even waste your time there! All they have are short-ish dresses with no sleeves. The only two contenders are too tight around the middle and I wouldn't wear them!

I'm not sure where you are or how "formal" you want to go, but do you have a Fashion Bug store near you? They have an online store too. I've never looked for dresses online, but I have shopped in the local store. They always have a great selection for plus size women. Dress Barn is also fantastic. I buy most of my work clothes at Dress Barn.

Do you have a David's Bridal near you? They have lovely plus-sized dresses.
Do you have a Sym's near you? Same thing. Both are reasonably priced as well.

The Macy's stores in Wisconsin-Milwaukee-Appleton, stopped carrying plus size formal dresses. I asked why-and the salesperson didn't know.

Try Kohl's online, they will sometimes have some formal dresses, but they go fast. Chadwick's will have dresses too online.
