"plunder" to bring home for class

jwann

I didn't see your post as unethical at all. I thought it was a good idea. Maybe not totally truthful but really what harm would it do. But then again as long as the gems went on the cruise ship and came back home, I wouldn't have a problem. As long as you presented it properly, I think the kids would have got a kick out a picture of Captain Hook with the "loot"

I say, go and get a good sleep and don't worry, your ethics are just fine.

I was refering to myself when I suggested buying the gems at home and giving them to the class.

They are for my son's fifth grade class not my preschoolers, If I were to do that my husband pointed out to me I would be teaching my son to lie. (and basically asking him to lie to his teacher and class) Jay had a bit of an issue with the beads too but then at least conceeded since we are getting them on the ship (from DeeAnn but on the ship)

I think I was not clear enough, or assumed others knew since I had posted about his pirate report for class that this was for HIS class and his teacher not my preschoolers.

I was never inferring that you were unethical but myself. My husband has a way of looking at things in black or white while I often see gray. Please accept my sincere apologies if you thought I was inferring anything negative about you, that was not my intent at all!!!!
ps love the solar ring idea-where is that store.
sorry again.

it seems like every once in a while posts are not showing up just a white or tan line? I wanted to make sure that my apology/clarification showed up. I never meant that jwann
was unethical but myself!!

Ann ~ If you are on the western route...

If you go to Del Sol, show them your KTTW & they will give you one of those plastic color changing rings for free. If you are on the Western, there's one in each Port- there's at least 3 rings. I think they sell for a buck each. Tell them what you are doing in each Port store. I bet they would give you a few more...

Go to the shopping in paradise talks. They have raffles for all kinds of stuff... Arno gives out cards for free stuff in the Ports. I think in GC a store was giving out a free loose sapphire jemstone. In KW it was something else, In Coz, it was free earring studs...Take advantage of that stuff if you're going to be shopping in Port anyway. It's free "plunder"!

If you're on the eastern, I'm sure there are similar giveaways...

Shells are great too! Collect them from the beaches you visit!

Have a great time on your cruise!

Do any of the countries your stops are in have their own money? What about changing a couple of US dollars at a bank for the equivilent of pennies in the other currency. You'd have lots of interesting coins to fill your chest.

That is a GREAT idea! I would assume Anguilla does don't think St. Thomas does but maybe? anyone know?

This might be wrong-and who knows unethical....but someone asked what "plunder" means...Per Merriam-Webster: "it means to take goods by force" "to steal or loot" So, even if you were to take the beads...to truely use them to the meaning of the word...you would have to "loot" them. That's getting technical...

I think anyone of the posted ideas are great! The beads, pennys from each area...shells...etc...but remember-if you have one of something you'll have to have one for all 21 students...I'd stick with the freebies and stuff...the treasure chest is a great idea too...

Ann - you are a very sensible women - so I am sure that you have thought this through. Why are you letting your teacher "bully your son into doing more work?" OK - maybe bully is a strong word.

It just irritates me that teachers think that they can load up on extra projects just because the kids are going on vacation and missing some school. IMHO, it is a reasonable expectation that the kids missing school should be expected to make up any work that they missed while being out of school. Why should they have to do extra projects that the other kids in the class aren't expected to do?

Just my 2 cents.

Huh???? Mike has a GREAT teacher, he is not bullying my son in the least. The other children in the class will be reading about pirates etc, Mike is going where pirates actually lived. The teacher is excited and enthused about this and thinks Mike can add first hand knowledge to the class. I think it is more than fine and probably a lot more enlightening than just reading a book and writing a journal.

I'm pretty sure I'm right about this: You cannot BUY plunder. Plunder must be stolen!

I don't understood the idea of bringing something back to the whole class. Why do kids want trinkets from someone else's vacation? Many of the kids in a typical class have never gone on a vacation -- other than a trip to Grandma's house. Many of them will never go on a cruise. Isn't it kind of rubbing their noses in it?

The class is studying pirates, the teacher thought it would be fun if we could find some "plunder" that could be used in class as they are writing their own plays about pirates. As to the "rubbing their noses in it" HUH??? Kids love trinkets, candy etc.. and we are from a very wealthy town I assure you not a child in his class is impressed Mike is going on a cruise, they certainly would not be offended to get trinkets to use in class. Geez...

I didn't realize they were actually learning about pirates in school - which then makes this bit of work a very logical project.

Pirates of the Carribean was showing at the end of October when we were on the Wonder!

Pirates of the Caribbean while we are on the trip, (he really is a GREAT teacher, gets the kids all enthused about learning) so it was a logical tie in.

Mrs. pete, RELAX~
it's only a school project, Mike is going to be IN the carribbean, his class is studying pirates and the carribbean. The teacher thought it would be a FUN thing to get something FROM the carribbean. He didn't mean to steal it. It's not rubbing anyone's noses in anything! Mike knows his parents work hard all year to go on this vacation.

deep breaths, deep breaths, relax.

I didn't mean to upset anyone. I just really don't "get" why kids would be interested in souveniers from someone else's vacation.

We also live in a fairly wealthy area, and most of my children's friends attend private school. Still, I have several less-fortunate kiddos in my scout troop who become quiet and withdrawn when other kids brag about things they have or places they've gone. Perhaps I'm more sensitive to this because I grew up dirt-poor.

I just adored Pirates of the Caribbean, and showed the DVD at my scrapbooking workshop last night! I also bought pirate hats for all of the women to wear. I ended up with an extra one and will bring it for Mike to wear the day he brings in his treasure chest of goodies!!! I bet the kids in his class are going to have the time of their lives reliving the excitement with him!!! I for one love your idea, and being a former teacher would appreciate all the extra work you are putting into this project!!!
See you in a few days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you could give him one time use ones and let him take pictures of what they would have seen like trees sand stingrays turtles and put pictures on poster bord and he can tell about each one. the he can give them a picture or keep them on his wall. get post cards for kids and littel bag of sand cheep and they can learn without knowing him to and not take up his time.:earsboy:

I think this is a great way to expand what the kids are learning in the class. It's a great learning experience for both your son and the class!

I think that growing up poor makes us more sensitive to others, but in my case, as my material wealth increased, I became more "ME ME ME". It took a lesson in life for me to get off the "ME" bandwagon - that includes my being "oversensitive" to issues.

My dear friends have an income that is twice ours - yet, their vacations consist of visiting relatives and Las Vegas gambling excursions. Their daughter has never seen the sights we have been able to show our children, especially Michael - because of what the parents do with their money.

Many teachers like to incorporate "real world" into the classroom and in the case with Ann's son - this is the reality. Some kids get different life experiences and it is a wise teacher who can use all the resources available to her for teaching.

Whether we are both with that "silver spoon" in our mouths or not, it's the experiences our parents give us that make us who we are and what we are - this is just a way of sharing. It is all in "how it's presented".

Maybe "Pirate Day" at the class would be the perfect way to handle it!!! Love that idea!
