Pleasure Island is now Not so Pleasurable

I'm surprised that Disney even let themselves be put in the situation where underage drinking is a possibility!! When my DSIS and I were there at 18 and 20 respectively we JOKED about how easy it would be to ask someone for their wrist band or get people to buy you drinks. Obviously there are people following through. I've been to a lot of places where they not only make you wear a wrist band but check your ID at the bar as well. It's really just a safety measure.

What I don't understand is yes, I'm sure Disney is making more money, but the majority of people coming in are underage anyway!!!! If I want to see sloppy drunk underagers I can just head up to college for a weekend. I thought PI was a place I could get away from that. I hope it's changed back very quickly.

How sad! I guess we won't be going to PI after all. We have one "adult" night while my parents are staying with girls so we were thinking of PI. GUess not-- what happened to the idea of PI being for adults only?? Why aren't security guards doing anything? With the camera phone craze, I am surprised no one has caught this nonsense on tape and submitted it to Disney.

At the very least, people should write to DIsney to voice concerns, complaints. It can't hurt--JMHO...

we haven't been to PI as it's just not something we'd enjoy but i was shocked how many people were leaving at 10-10:30 each night from the resort to go with their little kids in tow(we're "moderately" old people so we were coming back to go to bed:)...1) when did these kids sleep and 2) what do they( the kids) need to be at a night club for? maybe that's part of the reason you see crabby whiney kids in the parks. I am old fashioned i know but this just makes me really irritated, either spend $$ for a sitter or don't go. personally i think it's a bad site for it( imo it should not be in the middle of the "family type stuff" like cirque but off on it's own, like before they added the west side )
but now that anyone can get in it's even worse.

and even more puzzleing to me is where are the underaged kids' parents??? where do they think their kids are at that time of night that allows them to come back with alcohol on their breath? we also saw kids in their late teens by themselves leaving the resort.

Well I have to agree with one of the replies on this thread that I think they should go back to the drawing board and come up with somethine new for everyone. I was there with my younger sis (15) and we walked through did a little video together, they were stilt walkers around and they were doing the limbo in the street and we did that as well. I did not see any security walking around. I did however see them outside each club.

I was very upset to hear that people were getting kids drinks. If I saw something like that I would have reported it immediatly. For someone to watch that happen and NOT do anything about it! That is why it is going downhill because when people do see it happening they turn the other cheek and pretend that it will go away. I have an 18 year old brother and beleive me if I was with him in that area and he asked me for a drink, I'd get him a Coke!!!!

Since reading this thread I will write to Disney and let them know how I feel about it. I didn't see that many young kids in strollers but I did see some teens walking around who I guess didn't want to go to DisneyQuest. I hope some other Dis'ers will write as well and maybe we can get them to change something.

What exactly are the changes at PI? I gather from the posts that anyone can go at any time of night now. When my DH and I were on our honeymoon in July of 2002, they were so strict about checking Ids. We showed our ID's at the gate, and then had to show them like 3 more times when we bought drinks-even though we were wearing the wristbands. Keep in mind my husband looks young (about 17)! One CM even joked about being "way off" after checking his ID. I'm really surprised that Disnwy would change the rules there. Anyway, we will be sticking with Jellyrolls!! :drinking1

The last time we were there, we were a bit surprised to see parents bringing children into Adeventurer's Club. C'mon people, be responsible parents. Don't expose your children to adult humor like that. Some people were actually insulted that they would talk about S-E-X so openly like that at Disney.

IT'S AN ADULT AREA. IT SHOULD BE ADULT ONLY, BRING BACK THE ID CHECK AT THE GATE

If everyone who posted on this thread as well as everyone else who thinks the new policy is a loser, would write Disney about it, something might change. Venting here does no good whatsoever.

I plan to write and tell Disney that I will not visit PI again until the policy changes back to what it used to be:

18 and older only. Children under 18 must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian. No exceptions. (I'd prefer no one under the legal drinking age period).

Best wishes -

I agree with Carol - what do you think is the best way of getting across to them? Email, phone, or real mail? (or all 3)

I think most people saw this coming. When DSIS and I were at PI in 12/03 the new policy wasn't in effect but it was still pretty bad. Under age drinkers and we had a girl next to us lifting her shirt and flashing the guys on stage. One young man lucky to be 17 fell on DSIS and spilt beer all over her and yes security was walking around and totally ignoring all of this. I received a questionier via e-mail and boy did they get a ear full from me. Can't imagine what this december will be like. Susan
I saw that too! I couldn't believe it either!!! I hope changes will happen soon....

We used to go to PI before we had kids and it was inculded in our ticket. Even back then there was people with young kids with them, not wanting to pay for a sitter. It always bugged me. I think PI should be adults only and strickly inforced. WDW is really for kids (of all ages mind you, but a kid mindset still the same) PI should really be fore adults only. It is only fair to the adults. I don't even think under 18 with an adult should be allowed. No one under 18, perferabley 21.

DH and I aren't really interested in PI anymore, so we don't bother (if we did, we would get a sitter.) The comady club and adventors was good, but when at WDW I would rather rest, or if we went out just the 2 of us have a good meal and enjoy the parks with out the kids.

Also all the smoke just buggs me to death. Seeing young kids smoking puts me over the edge. (drinking would too.)

As much as I like DTD I have noticed that since it is open and no admisson it can be more crowded and not as many people on vacation, just hanging out. Since we got AP we tend to skip it too. Why bother with DTD if you can go to the parks for the same price?

We went to PI in January 04 for the first time after many trips to WDW, because our "kids" were now old enough (then 20 & 21) to be there. With the new policy change, I will not return. I don't want to spend an evening in a supposedly "adult" atmosphere with a bunch of teens. Sorry Disney, someone else is going to get that money.

When I heard that they were ending the old policy, I was afraid it would turn out like this. I would think that just from a liability standpoint, Disney would not want to put themselves at risk...but apparently I'm wrong.

Add me to the letter-writing campaign. This needs to be changed...and soon!

Funny...waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, when this new policy change came out...people thought it was a great idea. And those that were against it...were continually shot down on these boards.

But of course - that was "back when" PI was an "option" or "included" in your park hopper. True - it was always 18+ or "accompanied by a parent" in the past...but that was just to get into the "island"...now it's a free for all until you get "into the clubs"...therein lies the problem.

of course - they could just stop selling liquor on the 'street'...but then their business would REALLY go down I bet.

DH and I really aren't "club" people (Bring back the wildhorse saloon!!!)...so no big deal for us. Our most recent trip...we totally skipped PI and West Side.

Oh I am soooo disappointed right now. I didn't know anything about this. We haven't been in a few years, and were looking forward to PI especially the Adventurer's Club. I don't think we'll even waste our time now. I know my DD9 will probably want to go to see what it looks like, but if all that I read is going on there I don't know if I want her to see it. I'll also be writing a letter, but I guess it's too late to change it for our trip.

OK, I leave for a bit and all heck breaks loose. What in the name of all that is Mickey is going on?!

The last time I was at PI was during Halloween 2003. You paid at a window or showed your pass (if it had that option in the package) and were carded. Once you showed your ID, you got a wristband.

I too am on the "you should be 21 or older" train but I know that train is never going to stop at PI unfortunatly. I don't like seeing little kids in an open BAR because their parents were too cheap or too selfish to get a babysitter or just not go. They just don't get its not appropriate to have your kids up at 11;00pm in an open air BAR with drunk people.

Are you now telling me they don't card? Are you saying there is no admission fee? What is the "open policy"? I just paid EXTRA for Pleasure Island on my package for Feb. If its free, WHY in holy heck did I pay EXTRA for it?!

Can someone please clear this up for me? Adventurers Club is my favorite place and wanted to do some serious hanging out there. Is this going to be awful? Help. :guilty:

I was told that in order to get into the clubs, you'd need to pay or use one of your Plus options on your ticket...and it's one Plus option per club.

It's "free" to walk into PI...the street.

if you wanna go into a club...you pay...ie - your "MYW" option or whatever they call it these days. you show your ID/get your wristband when you go to go into a club. (and yes - you gotta wait in line at each club)

otherwise...i forget if the 'street vendors' hand out wristbands.

I wonder if most of the problems would be solved if entrance to the island was still "free", but there was an age policy: 18+ or with parent/guardian. This policy is easily enforceable, and would eliminate (well, cut down---there are always irresponsible parents) the roving bands of unsupervised teens looking for booze.
