I have many family who keep inviting me to be "friends" on facebook. I have no desire to have a networking page with any of my information on it.

But, I guess I have to "join" if I want to see their pages.

How does facebook work and is there a way to just keep up with family and friends without having to have a website of my own?

If you had to have a page to be a friend--do I suddenly become their friends' friend? One relative in particular has a very questionable past. I am unsure of her "present"--but the past was pretty colorful and I wouldn't want to inadvertently be "friends" with people I do not know.

I'm totally clueless, please teach the grasshopper!

(I may be confusing it with how myspace works, but the invites have all been on facebook.)

It's easy to join, taking a few minutes to fill out the required information.

Using privacy settings, you control what anyone sees. You also have control over who you want as a "friend".

You becoming "friends" with someone does not mean their friends become your friends.

It's not complicated at all!

Also, if you do not want certain people to know you have a FB page, you can block them completely.

I did not want my sister to know that I have a FB page and so I blocked her. (She is really nosy and thinks she knows it all)

I've been on facebook for quite a while now and really like it. You can set it to where only your "friends" can see your page...and you pick who they are. It's been fabulous for me because I have an adult son and lots of family members out of state...I get to see what they are up to and look at their pictures. I've reconnected with long lost cousins and old school friends...I say go for it:)

Yes you have to join to see their pages. Joining also sets up a page of your own.

Their friends do not become your friends.

Facebook has many privacy options. You can set up your page anyway you want. You can even go so far as to show nothing but the very basic of info (like nothing more than your name really.) It is incredibly flexible and customizable if you take the time to use the settings. You have to customize each section individually (you'll understand once you join) but it will only take like 15 min.
