On March 27th, my husband had tingling/numbness on his right side from his shoulder to his foot, but actually the couple of days prior he felt tightness in his calf. Never blurred vision, never pain, never a headache. He called me, I was in Florida at the time. I missed his calls. When I saw I had missed calls from him I called back. He told me an ambulance was on its way because "someone" told him he was having a stroke. Though his vitals were fine in the ambulance.
He got to the hospital which is the worst hospital in our area and they ran tests. Other then his bloodwork which showed high choloesteral the ct.scan came out as unremarkable. Symptoms never got worste but they kept him for observation. He called me to say that he had a stroke. I came home from Florida and went to the hospital very confussed since, all tests came out fine, I wanted to know how they diagnosed his stroke. The nurse that I asked was very mixed up because she didn't even realize he was in their for a stroke, it said it NO WHERE on his chart. She came in and went over the chart with us.
Finally, comes the MRI, then the next day being released. Not one mention of a stroke on his release forms. No restrictions checked off, and he was told he could go back to work immediatly. We both went the next day to work on a movie, and he was absolutly fine. He still had some numbness and tingling, but not enough to ever effect his walking or moving whatsoever. Infact he felt no different from when had had gone to the hospital in the first place.
So the day after that I wanted to pick up his medical records from the hospital, him and I went to do that and were told we could only have some of them, the other stuff would be faxed to our family Doctor. Why wouldn't we get to see all of them?
The ones we did get said a lot of medical terminology, but each said the same thing at the bottom, unremarkable findings. Well, one did note plaque build up but other then that ended the same way.
His hand started to feel more tingling/numb (only his hand). I called our Doctor explained the whole thing, the nurse said the paper work she had at that point did not mention a stroke. But would press the hospital for a final report to be faxed to them before our afternoon appointment.
When we got to the Doctor he said that my husband did have a stroke and should have been on bedrest for two weeks, not driving or back to work. I honestly felt too shocked at the moment to ask where on the Medical test results indicated a stroke, but see the Doctor was reading the final report that had come earlier that afternoon.
I know little about strokes, but thought at minimal, he would have had a headache, blurred vision or something, not just tingling/numbness to the point that it didn't even effect him. For crying outloud, he was certainly able to be intimate w/ me upon his release from the hospital. Wouldn't a stroke effect everything?
I guess I wonder, which I will ask the Doctor on Tuesday at our follow up visit, how they determined he had a stroke. I'm just asking anyone here if they have ever heard of a full blown stroke (not a TIA because they symptoms disapear immediatly) ONLY effecting you to the point of numbness/tingling, and not other symptoms.
Any good thoughts or advice you could send my way would be appreciated.
Thanks for listening.

I have heard of people having mild strokes before. I hope your husband is o.k. I'm sorry I don't have any true insight into this for you. I'll say a prayer for you and your family that everything will be o.k.

I am sorry to hear that you can't get the details. Hopefully you will be able to get to the bottom of this. I will keep you both in my prayers.

thanks everyone. I'll say its about the strangest experience I have ever had. When he tells people he knows at the store, or at the barber shop, they can't believe it. This is also putting doubt in my mind. I'm telling you its so strange.

I have never had a stroke, but I do have some of those symptoms when I have severe migraines. It's very scary and most doctors I've seen just blow it off like it's nothing abnormal. I'm glad to hear your DH is doing alright.

The more research dh and I do the more it doesn't make sense. He never had a headache before this whole thing, during or after.
Tomorrow is our follow up with the family Doctor and now that we had time to digest all of this, we have a lot of questions to ask. Point blank we want to know if he can tell us without a doubt that dh had a stroke.

I would suggest a follow-up with a neurologist to either rule it in or rule stroke out. This is not a diagnosis you want to have on your medical records--it will make it very hard to nigh impossible to get life insurance for him.

I know I really want to follow up with a neurologist.
The report I finally got gave the following Diagnosis: Left Thalamic Infarct the detailed report said no hemorrrhage associated with that and the ventricular system is normal, the orbits are unremarkable, the pituitary appears normal.
Maybe thats a fancy way to word stroke, I don't know but have been doing a whole bunch of googling, only getting more confused.
My Mom is convinced that he has a case of the shingles. Someone else we met suggested MS. I just don't understand why they wouldn't just put stroke on the report if thats what it was.

I know this thread is almost 6 weeks old, but wanted to give you the details on what we just went through.

A week ago today my dad started slurring his words and was paralyzed on the left side. I called 911 immediately. It turns out that he had been having occurrences of his vision in 1 eye going out for about 30 seconds during the past year.

He did have a stroke - but it was a mini-stroke or TIA. But it is still considered a stroke. He has NO remaining symptoms or paralysis at all - thank goodness.

But after 2 days of all sorts of tests including CAT scan and MRI it was determined that he had 90% blockage in his carotid artery. He had surgery done on Friday and came home today (Monday).

We are SO lucky. If this had not happened he would almost certainly have had a major, major stroke.

I hope all is well with your husband.

First big hugs...

Second.. I think I would be pretty annoyed and would be in my battle gear already. I would be talking to your family doctor and saying two things, I would want a follow up with a neurologist and have follow up tests with a better hospital....there has to be a better hospital that at least knows whether or not your DH did in fact have a stroke and would tell his wife who came home from Florida to be at his side.. I would want to know if there was any damage from this stroke and what are the chances that it could happen again.

This is a prime example of the squeaky wheel gets the oil, you are his wife, he or you had every right to know exactly what the tests said and what was going on with him.

I do hope he is feeling better and that you two can manage what is going on with him... Please keep us in the loop....Sorry I get so passionate but sometimes I am just shocked at what I read and how hospitals treat patients.

I just wanted to expand a little on what happened with my dad.

We were sitting in the living room when my sister called to talk to him. He was stretched out in his recliner. He was mumbling a little talking to her and I heard her say - I can't understand you.

My dad is a big kidder - he has joked in the past about being sick, passed out, etc. I walked over to him and said "If you are joking STOP right now."

I noticed that his left eye was looking out to a different direction. Knowing some of the tests for a stroke, I asked him to raise his arms. He could not lift his left arm. I asked him to smile - he did but the left side drooped. I asked him to say a sentence.

He was of perfectly sane mind - but he had NO CLUE that all was not okay. None at all. I called 911 right then as it is IMPERATIVE that you get stroke treatment as soon as possible.

In less than an hour all of his symptoms has disappeared. Had he been in bed taking a nap (as he had been earlier) neither of us would EVER have known that the stroke occurred.

The next instance could have been a major, major stroke that could have left him in a nursing home - paralyzed and unable to speak.

Don't mess around with a stroke or a possible heart attack. Don't wait to see if it goes away, don't try to drive them yourself. Get an ambulance there ASAP.

The OP may have described Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).

I was diagnosed last March with a "mild" case that started with numbness on one side, later a tingling sensation all over my body. It has yet to go away.

If the OP is still reading this thread, has he been assesed for GBS?
