Please share your Christmas menu

DD and I talked about this last week. We decided on a bunch of appetizer type things, and then lazy leftovers next day. Mainly just picking. Then that night her father emailed me to tell me he would be taking her Dec 24-Jan 1st out of town. :sad1: So I guess we will do our appetizers and Christmas on Sunday before. Then I will be alone for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and NYE, so likely won't eat or maybe a little soup if I get hungry.

Aww I hope you eat something you like while DD is away. You don't even have to cook, buy it from your favorite restaurant to have at home.

Last year we made a tri-tip roast with creamed potatoes/asparagus...and also had apps like Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, crab dip, etc...

My daughter and I are going to tackle Julia Child's Beef Bourguignon. It has 35 steps to the recipe.:scared1: I think it's crazy, but we're gonna do it. Serving it with buttered parsley noodles and French bread...:banana:

I made this for the first time last month. Very good...especially since it contains 3 cups of wine. :thumbsup2

2 words of advice - start early.

We decided a few years ago to stop traveling on Christmas and stay home. So, I started doing a "fancy" meal on Christmas day. Our menu, so far, this year is.

Balsalmic & Onion Pot Roast Made this last year and it was such a hit that I will be making it again this year.
Mashed potatoes
Asparagus with lemon & Parmesan
Glazed Carrots
Stuffing
Rolls
and for dessert I normally do a decadent chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and topped with chocolate ganache.

We may do a make your own pizza buffet for Christmas Eve. New Year's Eve we always do appetizers only and everyone gets to pick their favorite to include.

Christmas dinner is always at Grandma's house. She's 82 and going strong. She'll make the turkey and ham (Grandpa won't touch poultry) and Mom and I will split the rest between us:
Shrimp cocktail appetizer
Shrimp salad
Rolls
Jello salad
Lima beans
Green beans
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
Dressing AND stuffing
Sweet potatoes
Turkey
Ham
Olives, pickled onions and veggies

Dessert-apple and chocolate pies with IDE cream and/or cool whip plus a pecan pie I make and only my husband eats. And Christmas cookies, fudge, almond roca- all home made.

I am tired just thinking about it!

We know Grandma won't be able to host for too much longer. I've volunteered to host but won't be going all out with this spread. I'm thinking ham, rolls, salad, scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts with pie for dessert work for me...

We had people over for Thanksgiving (October for us Canadians) and I did the turkey but tend to change up the dressing (stuffing) each year. Sometimes sausage and onion, etc, other times apples, sage, etc. I made homemade cream of tomato soup as an appetizer and served it with a dollop of creme fraiche. I even put it in a tea pot and poured each guest's portion. It was a big hit. I also switch up my sides. We did Brussels sprouts and pancetta, potatoes and carrots. We finished with pear and apple crisp. Christmas is just me and my husband this year as he has to work at 6 am on Boxing Day. He works retail and since our nearest family members are a three hour round trip we decided to make this year less stressful. We have decided to make Beef Wellington along with the sprouts again and I think I may make a celery root mash instead of potato since we have pastry on the Wellington. However those Boursin potatoes sound awesome, perhaps I'll make ham this weekend.

We're doing our usual main meal:
Beef Tenderloin
Au Jus
Yorkshire Pudding
Green Beans
Salad
Rolls

Now in terms of appetizers it can vary. This year we'll do smoked salmon spread because we have some delicious smoked fish from Alaska. We'll also have a meat and cheese tray. I'm sure there will be veggies too with assorted dips.

Dessert is always Christmas cookies and mint chip ice cream. It's a great finisher after a very rich meal.

Christmas Eve: Spiral ham with pineapple, potato salad, macaroni salad, scalloped potatoes, asparagus wrapped in bacon.
Appetizers: meatballs, pigs in a blanket, sausage dip with chips, grilled pineapple wrapped in bacon, summer sausage with sweet/hot mustard, swiss cheese log with crackers, sausage balls.
Christmas Day: Breakfast casserole, leftover ham on hawaiian sweet rolls.
New Year's Eve: Oyster roast and beer! :cool1:
New Year's Day: Blackeyed peas, collard greens, cornbread, fried chicken and mashed potatoes and sweet tea!
Yes I'm in the South! Gotta have the peas and collards for good luck and prosperity in the new year!:thumbsup2

It will just be DH, myself and my Mom here for Christmas Day dinner. Same as it was last year.

Last year I did a turkey and all the trimmings. Mom didn't seem to really enjoy it, and it was a lot of work.

This year I mentioned to her that I was thinking about doing "something different" for Christmas Day dinner. I said I was thinking about making spaghetti and garlic toast. Her eyes lit right up and she said that would be great! Her favorite food is spaghetti and for some reason she never makes it for herself. So, that's what we'll be having for Christmas dinner this year. :)

But then on the Sunday after is when all our family will be here for our family Christmas celebration. We're doing brunch at 10:00 as our daughter's husband will have to leave for work (he's a sargeant at the local prison) about 1:30. So, we're having:

Stuffed French Toast
Two baked egg casseroles (one with ham, one with sausage)
Two kinds of homemade muffins (probably blueberry and apple/cinnamon)
Sliced ham and link sausages
Hash brown casserole
Fresh fruit bowl (melons, berries, etc.)
Orange/apple/cranberry juices
Coffee
Mimosas

Then I'm going to have snacks in the afternoon for anyone who just wants to "hang out" for the rest of the day:
Meats/cheeses/crackers tray
Veggie tray with dip
Chex Mix
Fruitcake/Christmas cookies
Pumpkin Roll
Assorted pop and iced tea and coffee
Adult beverages

We're going different this year with a Mexican theme

cheese enchiladas with red sauce
chicken enchiladas with green sauce
pork tamales
taco bar
chips.....queso, salsa and guacamole
and green salad

not sure about dessert yet.....DD is thinking about making churros

I love a delicious brunch!! It all sounds so good!

These are so darn delicious, and really pretty simple.

Boursin Potatoes

3 pounds red potatoes, unpeeled
salt & pepper
1 pint heavy cream
1 (5 oz) package of boursin cheese
Fresh chives or parsley, chopped

Slice potatoes into quarter inch rounds and toss with S & P
Slowly heat heavy cream and cheese until melted
In a buttered dish layer half of potatoes
Pour over 1/2 of cream mixture
Repeat
Cover and back at 350 degrees for an hour
Sprinkle the top with chives or parsley

(If you really want to make it easy, I've used the pre-sliced fresh potatoes in the bag - usually in the refrigerator aisle. I think they're called "Simply Potatoes" and they taste quite good!!)

Omg, I have to make these, yum! Thanks!

We eat at my mom's house:

Super simple, but one if my favorites of the year.

Shrimp cocktail
Cheese ball
Queso and chips
Spiral ham from Honey Baked Ham
Broccoli casserole
Potato salad
Baked beans
Mac and cheese
Rolls
Large assortment of candy, pies, cookies

We have always had Xmas at our house with about 30 family members. Last year we decided we didn't want to host Xmas anymore. (long story) We went to WDW instead and had the best Xmas ever! This year, the kids wanted to stay home & be with the family. But next year we will be at WDW again.

Lots of Italian bread!!

Sugar cookies (Xmas shapes with frosting)
Snickerdoodle cookies
Peanut Butter Blossom cookies
Chocolate Crackled cookies

Desserts I will purchse:
Cheese cake from the Cheese Cake Factory

I'm Italian, so our Xmas tradition is Italian food. I am also Puerto Rican and for Thanksgiving, along with Turkey & all the traditional fixings, we have Spanish food too. :thumbsup2

Christmas Eve is my favorite meal of the year. My mom started the tradition of just appetizers that night when we were little. Everyone got to pick their favorites. Now my two sisters who live locally and I help with the cooking. There are 15 of us, 16 if my other sister comes home. We still do the appetizers which usually include:

Shrimp cocktail
Stuffed mushrooms
Bacon rollups
Artichoke dip
Nachos
Meatballs
Veggie tray
Fruit tray

There is usually other stuff, but those are the standards. Cookies for dessert. My sisters and I bake a lot so we will have huge trays of cookies.

Christmas Day is at my house and I do the traditional turkey and ham dinner with all the sides--mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole, rolls, applesauce, and stuffing. We have SIL and her family, MIL, FIL, my parents and one of my sisters and her family. Other in town sis goes to her in-laws. For dessert we have more cookies and a brownie trifle and someone usually brings a pie or two.

For the next 3or 4 days we eat leftovers--my favorite part of the holidays is those days after Christmas when all the cleaning, shopping, wrapping and baking are done and the kids are still home and we hang out and play board games and eat whatever we find. Love it!

Whatever they're serving on the Disney Dream.
:-D

Well that sounds very nice!!!:goodvibes

I am hosting Christmas Eve, still figuring things out but here it is so far...

Appetizers/lunch at noonish.

Homemade cheese ball, sausage, crackers
Hot Roast Beef on french rolls for sandwiches
Dill Dip with Rye Round
Veggie Tray
Relish Tray

Dinner

Spiral Ham (maybe)
Scalloped Potatoes
Lasagne

Desserts

Chocolate Mint Dessert (the must have thing we have every Christmas)
Famous Wafer Cake (going to try this out for fun)
Christmas cookies
Lemon Cake

I am not cooking Christmas Day, LOL! Leftovers it is. :wave2:

We are hosting an early Christmas this year-family will be coming the Sunday prior. I'm looking for ideas and recipes for our menu-from appetizers to mean dishes to sides to dessert. It will be: me, DH, my MIL, BIL, SIL, 2 nieces (3 & 5) & my DD (14 months). No one is picky, but obviously not looking for anything spicy, because of the kiddos.

So far, I want to make either a brisket or a pot roast. Any mouthwatering recipes you can share?

Sides ideas that would complement the meat?

Appetizer ideas?

We are going to make some fun cookies (snowman shaped maybe?), might pick up a dessert from Costco.

Thanks!:goodvibes

I have a list of stuff pinned from pinterest that I may want to try this year.

Need the sun dried tomato dip recipe! That sounds so good!

Also, I'm curious about your SIL's cin. crescent roll thing. My son loves cinnamon.

I still can't figure out what we are having. We had prime rib once but this time I'm serving more than 8. Do I do two?
We usually have around 16 people and I just go to the butcher and have them custom cut me a large roast. We have gone to our local butcher, but the last couple of times we were really pleased with Safeway's quality. AND they are always on sale the week of Christmas.

I love this! Thank you for sharing. I think maybe I will start this but on a different day.

For Christmas eve we have sloppy joes and Ballreich potato chips. Costs a small fortune to have them shipped but it is an old family tradition.

Christmas breakfast is whatever we decide that morning and overnight cinnamon rolls.
Christmas dinner has been a prime rib pasta w/ a horseradish sauce. It is really good but I am thinking of something else this year. Though DH is not liking me changing it.

Could I get the recipe for overnight cinnamon rolls. I've been looking for a good one. This is such a fun thread.
