If it's a heat pump it's always COOL air. It puts out air at the temp that you've requested. So if you've asked for 69 degrees, it's going to put out 69 degree air, which will feel cool.
If you've got gas or oil or baseboard heat, it should put out warm air until the room gets to 69 degrees.
It may blow out room temprature air, depending on current temp.
Say it is 90 degrees outside and you set it on HEAT MODE but at 69 degrees, the heater(since it is heat mode) can not COOL that air down to 69 so it is just blowing out room temprature air.

Yup, it's sad, eh? I hate my heat pump. But we don't have a lot of choice here. Gas line stops about 1/2 mile from my house with no foreseeable hook up happening anytime soon.
