Please settle a diaagreement

We have been to Wdw enough so that my teens consider themselves experts. Lol

I am the planner and former fast pass runner.

We are going June 2015 with several newbies that aren't quite as used to walking as we are

I was explaining to the newbies that at Wdw that we could easily walk 10 to 15 miles a day (I'm thinking Epcot ). But of course my teens think that I'm crazy that we never walk more than 5.

We are theme park commandos. I know we walk a lot

What is your touring style and how many miles do you estimate you walk a day? I really need to impress on the newbies that they need to be prepared so I'm really curious to see your answers. Thanks

Every time I've used an app to keep up with it its always been around 15 and 20 miles, but we walk to DHS from the Swolphin and then walk to Epcot for lunch and then will walk back through EP to get to MK, so we walk a lot. just up to you as what you want to do! I think if you're just in 1 park for a day it'd be a lot less but I can't speak to that.

I don't know how much I actually walked in January, but it was enough to not gain a pound or two after taking in a ton of calories over 10 days!

I think totaling up the milage scares some people. Unless they have a comparison as to how far they walk in a normal day it's a bit pointless. A lot of people don't realize just how many steps they take in a day. I know I walk about 4 miles around a university campus just going to the places I go every day.

I'd put our WDW walking at 8-10 miles a day. We're not commando but we have been known to go from open to close.

I am not so sure these pedometers/fitbits give an accurate measure.
One trip I took mine and obviously came on all the rides with me- all that bumping around upped the measure considerably:lmao:

I wondered about the bumping of rides on the pedometer and remember checking before and after a ride once. Did not seem to affect mine.

I wore a pedometer a trip or two. We racked up 10 miles on a park-hopping day and only 4 miles one Studios day. We are semi-commando and FP- runner people.

I think people tend to overestimate how much the average person needs to "train" to walk around the parks. Sure, visitors may walk anywhere from 7-12 miles a day, but that's also spread out over 8-12 hours and the walking is broken up with long stretches of sitting and standing. Your feet aren't sore at the end of the day because of the distance you traveled, but because most people aren't used to being on them for extended periods of time. While there is certainly no harm in improving one's cardiovascular ability before a trip, good footwear selection is far more vital in keeping one's feet relatively pain-free.

I walk a lot with work, but we (me, dh and kids) all "train" for Disney a few weeks before we go by walking our neighborhood.

I'm gonna agree with the teens, sorry. I'd say 5-7 miles for most people is the max.

This.

For those using things like a fitbit or other pedometers, they do not work in circumstances like amusement parks. In amusement parks, most of your strides are far shorter than your normal stride. You shuffle, shuffle, shuffle through WDW because of the crowds and lines. Your pace count determines the distance measured by these devices, so the final result is useless for anything other than a step count.

January trip wearing my ped. HUbs and I averaged 9 miles/day. one day we did 12 miles in a frantic search for lost fanny pack at Epcot. I told him I thought I had another month to train for princess race he just laughed at me.

We did 6-7 miles on average last trip and a 10 mile day at the MK. We walked less than on past trips because we were with our three month old so we were at the park for fewer hours in the day.

These are my thoughts too. If the newbies are elderly, very young or have health issues it is a good idea to prepare them but if they are average healthy people is there really a need to "train" them? I guess most people can figure out that if they spend 8 to 12 hours at a theme park they will be doing alot of walking and standing :confused3

been going 1 - 2x a year since 1992. We like to stop and smell the roses so to speak.

We have worn pedometers in the past and iphone tracking. We average 8-10 miles a day walking.

:woohoo::woohoo:

Thanks everybody...

I still think I'm safe saying 8 to 10 miles a day.

I think I just want to make sure they can keep up! which its going to require some stamina on their part & some convincing for them to wear some comfortable walking shoes (not necessarily the most fashionable)

as a side note, it FREAKS me out when I see women in heels at Disney.

well to each their own, but when your with me...you must be ready to walk those miles (without whining) and you must have some comfortable broke in walking shoes.

lol :cheer2:

At disney in Dec 2013, ended up with 124 miles over 10 days that included arrive and leaving day. Peaked at about 16 miles in one day with the 12.4miles / day average. we were at parks from open to close most nights.

I can tell you from the GPS/step tracker on my phone that it had us covering almost 25 miles over 3 days back in December. I'd say 8 miles a day would be very realistic.

I've done a pedometer twice just for the heck of it. It's us two adults, early 50s and our normal thing. But we do walk instead of ride. Like, we'll walk to a park entrance instead of taking the tram, etc.

Our lowest was 13 miles (it rained that day so we had some long times just waiting somewhere) and our longest, and I'm not kidding, was 23 miles. But remember, we walk and don't ride so that 23 miles is way out of the park (literally and figuratively).

Why worry about how long? It would be fun to gauge it but it doesn't really matter. Just do Disney the way you normally do and who cares? If you need to have a note about it (like losing weight or something), then do it. Otherwise, I'm not counting the miles, I'm counting the memories.
