We have been to Wdw enough so that my teens consider themselves experts. Lol

I am the planner and former fast pass runner.

We are going June 2015 with several newbies that aren't quite as used to walking as we are

I was explaining to the newbies that at Wdw that we could easily walk 10 to 15 miles a day (I'm thinking Epcot ). But of course my teens think that I'm crazy that we never walk more than 5.

We are theme park commandos. I know we walk a lot

What is your touring style and how many miles do you estimate you walk a day? I really need to impress on the newbies that they need to be prepared so I'm really curious to see your answers. Thanks

To keep the newbies in favour of the parks, I would underestimate the amount of miles you cover!!
Less is more in this instance...

I'm gonna agree with the teens, sorry. I'd say 5-7 miles for most people is the max.

I am a former commando now lives here with an AP so my style has changed a little anyways. I too did the 10 miles a day easily cause we were never in the resort and always at a park. Running back and forth for the FP runner upped that amount. And criss crossing for rides adds up.

I will say my last weekend trip was with the new FP+ and its going to change the way people tour...or at least it will for me. You have your 3 FP+ times and the rest you have to stand in line for. Now you may choose to run around looking for short stand by times inbetween your FP+ or you might just get in line for whichever ride you come to. But for now 3 FP is all you get.

But Disney is definitely a walking adventure and I would make sure to impress that upon anybody going. Just the walk from your room to the shuttle bus to where you get dropped to walk to the front gate before "really" starting the day can be a hike depending. Of course you don't want to freak out your newbies so make sure they pack comfy shoes and encourage some pre-trip walking to get ready.

Last year when I tallied up all our Fitbit steps, we did an average of 9 miles per day.

On our trip 10-day trip (9 park days) in October I walked 78.4 miles, so an average of 8.7 miles per day. A typical day for us is RD-8pm (sometimes earlier, sometimes later).

This was our average last month according to my fitbit. And we're not commandos by any stretch. If we'd been at the parks from open to close, we would have easily added another mile or two to the total.

While it doesn't need to be an endurance test, anyone not accustomed to a healthy stroll on a fairly regular basis would do well to "train" for a WDW trip. Nothing elaborate, but some laps around the block daily for a few weeks before the trip would help. :earsboy:

I suggest you find a 5k run/walk in your area that's held about a 4-6 weeks before your trip. Have everyone prep for that.

If they can walk the 5k (3 miles) without being exhausted then they can handle the extra needed at Disney. They'll be tired and footsore eventually, but not likely to point of not having fun. If the 5k is too much, they get a wake up call and still have several weeks to get it in gear.

Also encourage them to spend more time on their feet. Standing still is harder on the feet than walking.

Having a test goal can be fun and gives the newbies a goal to reach for that is attainable and not discouraging. If someone told me I'd be walking 15 miles on vacation (that's more than a half marathon!) I'd think twice about going.

I think we logged about 3-4 miles a day at WDW, with a hefty afternoon swim break.

Now, at DLR, we easily did 10-15 with the walk to the park, through the park, to the other park, back to the hotel to swim, back to the park in the evening, and back to the hotel at closing. To me, you walk way more at DLR than WDW, but WDW is much more spread out and has multiple transportation options where at DLR everything is walkable.

Not commandos, but according to my Fitbit, we averaged about 11 miles/day in January for 10 days. We were staying @ BCV, so we walked to parks and around the area a decent amount.

At least 7 to 9 miles per day.... I'm getting old because I needed a rest day after the 4th day.

My go zone virgin health miles pedometer registers between 25000-30000 steps per day. As a teacher I usually get 7,000-9,000. I never sit down at work. We actually get about the same number of steps city touring in Europe as in Disney.

We averaged 10 miles/day per my Fitbit on our May 2013 trip and had 2 kids under 5 and were out of the parks at dinner time every day (not commando). I had no idea, and had anticipated 4-5/day before we went!

The first time we went I had a pedometer and we did 10 miles one day...that's all I remember. This time I will take my fitbit and I am actually excited to see what it calculates. Hoping to get at least 5-7 miles

I think I actually lost weight when we were at WDW last time from all the walking. My body wasn't used to it haha

We've been keeping track of this for several years....our average is 9 miles per day. The highest count was an anomaly, but nonetheless that was a 14 mile day (and we were tired!!).
