I do know for a fact at least for 1 person at Disney that they were told they could go no further since they did not have their degree and if they had been hired today they would not have been promoted to as high of a managerial position as they were. This was at Disney in Florida.

I'm not disputing you it does happen sometimes at other places, but not usually and who are you supervising? can you go higher? and do you have no additional training past hs?

I can tell you that I do not work for Walmart. The company I work for does not have retail establishments. I supervise business to business sales and customer service employees. I can and will go higher. And I most likely do have more experience than the OP, but you have to start somewhere.

I was hired at a well known, Fortune 100 company two years ago and within a year was promoted to a supervisory role in one of their corporate offices. I don't have a degree. You don't "know for a fact".

I agree, it depends on the position you're going for but it's not always necessary.

My Sr VP told me he never stepped foot into a college. He started working for the company right out of high school and he's in his 30s.

If you can, I suggest talking to people who work for both.

The last time we went to Orlando we stayed at Universal. I know the hotel desk clerk came from Disney because he thought Universal had a better package. I believe he had a college degree.

I also agree with the other poster. I would practice writing correctly. On your job you might need to write something and you want to be proficient in what you write. I realize spelling is not important on the Dis Boards, but typically, practice helps with your abilities. (Can you tell I am a teacher.)

Good luck with your choice. It is obvious you are motivated to succeed and that means a lot! Congratulations and be happy that you have 2 choices!

thank you everyone for the amazing suggestions. as of today im honestly leaning towards disney because of education. btw both jobs are 25 to 30 minutes away. at either job i dont want to be laid back i like to work hard and do a good job at that imo. also the hours are 5 am to 1 at the wilderness lodge because it pool cleaning and that is done in the morning before the pool is open at i think 7 and i just maintain it every day until 1. my dad was telling me that a great reason disney is good is because the amount of hotels they have so that leaves more room for other job oppurtunitys. im not going to lie i loved the lady who interviewed me at HR. she was very nice and seemed to really want me on her team. keep in miind that i only been to the casting center and did not meet my co workers or bosses yet so im a little nervous about that lol. but ive been to both hotels in the past many times and stopped by the Wl 2 days ago to see the employees but it was late so no pool attendants. i really appreciate all the helpful things you guys have all said and please the more suggestions the better

oh and btw my dad didnt go to colledge and he is the boss of 12 action gator tire companys and one of them is the AAA car care center in front of magic kingdom. and my best friends dad is a highly paid manager for 3 disney hotels and didnt go as well. if you work hard and put years in a company and get trust you can move up just as fast. companys just prefer a degree. you can live a good life without one its whatever you prefer and what job your goiong into. sorry i needed to clear that up

I have worked for both Disney and Universal. I can say that I would pick Disney hands down. The 2 companies are like night and day. Also, if you ever leave the Orlando area, having worked for Disney looks amazing on a resume'.

As for the college degree argument on this thread, it really depends on your field. In my career field, experience and "who you know" means much more than a degree. When I have tried to apply for jobs outside of my career field then I have not been able to even get an interview without a degree.

Geez, by the comments on this you would think the op was asking for the best way to collect welfare, not a job selection. Some people just feel the need to be cruel to make themselves feel better.

OP, go with your gut. Which interview were you the most comfortable with? I've read some things that Disney is very difficult to work for, but that is just some things that I read at a time that I was considering moving to FL. There are many companies that will only consider employees for open positions & even will assist you with furthering your education. Good Luck.

Not so yay when you realize you can ruin yourself financially by moving up within a company. There's a lot of frontline cast members that have worked across the board, but never up, because of the lack of pay in management, and overtime with no overtime pay.

Universal isn't much better either. There's only a handful of management positions and places to go higher within that company, with thousands upon thousands of frontline cast members. So chances aren't high with moving and growing with a company.

If you look at other companies, most the time, new stores open up, the company expands, and other things that make it more obtainable for the low rung person to move up. There are things like getting coordinator at Disney, but you're still front line with more responsibility, and an extra buck an hour when you're clocked in as one. If not, you're just a regular old CM.

And Disney only looks cool on an application when you're not in Orlando. If you stay in Orlando, it's expected of just about any one to work for one of the theme parks.

I think I see why you have such a hard time obtaining and holding jobs and WHY Disney put you on their Do Not Hire Blacklist.

Yes, Disney is hot. Yes, their employees work hard and at times very hard. Yes, they work most if not all major holidays. Yes, it is WORK.

At Disney and most every other place the difference between an ex-employee, a "regular old CM," and those who have a future in the company is about 25% skill, education and ability and about 75% attitude and willingness.

FRom everything I've read lately-all WDW employees hours have been cut to below 40 hour week-surprised that there are some working that much

Just to clarify. You were offered a job at Hard Rock not at Universal. Is that correct? So wouldn't you be working for Hard Rock/Loews Hotels?
Really just wondering. I know Disney owns their hotels but Universal's on-sites are a joint venture.

the portofino and royal pacific are the loews hotel and hard rock is more universal. but all the bosses from all 3 hotels treat thier employees the same way and follow the same rules so in a way its like a loews hotel. i know this because my gf works at the royal pacific as a pool att. and she loves her job but wants me to try disney as well since she seen herself that alot of the people there are lazy and the bosses are very chilled out. i know alot of people would say thats cool and im young so it would fit my attitude better but i want to be treated more like a professional honestly. thats just me, so thats another reason disney might be my choice.

i love the wilderness theme and its really cool to think that every morning i will see a sunrise over the huge lake there. but i listen and love rock. so i would love to have music playing while im doing my job. but i would say disneys theme is always better. also and this is random i love the new cards you get a magic kingddom, "the sourcerers of magic kingdom" and i would leave work and grab my 5 cards everyday

thank you alot Rita E im not going to lose this dream i love to write and hopefully i make it big but if not i have a good paying hotel job as a fall back and yes planogirl its confusing as hell. every day i wake up i choose the opposite of what i wanted yesterday. but this is the second morning i wanted disney so hopefully i made my choice. and also thank to everyone else that have wished me luck. im still want oppinions though. and just a random statement, im a huge fan of "the shining" and imo the wilderness lodge looks alot like it so thats also inspiration for writting

Have you worked for either of these companies? It is great to give advice but it is better to give advice on something you actually have experienced.

What tips? I've used the HRH pool, shown my keycard and gotten towels (and water) and saw no one tipping the towel person. Who is giving tips for that?

What a dumb thing to say! This is a real job and it is always much easier to move up if you actually have a foot in the door.

OP, from my time on the Universal boards I know that many people work as both CMs and TMs (not that you'd be a TM, working at HRH, but we'll use it as shorthand). Is there any way you can do both jobs? You'd be busy as anything, but the money and experience would be nice! (I once worked 3 jobs at once, wheeeee!)

VERY good point- I have never tipped the Towel guy ever! Only the waiter at the pool -or bartender got a tip-and it was charged to the room
