sorry I haven't been back on to update. Dakota is recovering well. He is having some motor skill problems and is stuttering. He is also having nightmares. Doctors are hoping he will come home midweek.

Dakota's family dynamic. His mom and dad were never married and only together for approximatly 6 months. He has a twin brother and 2 half brothers from his mom. Because his parents were together for such a short time is why I don't really know his dad and don't know stepmom at all. They don't live in the same town we do.

I am so glad to hear the update, and pray that every day brings more recovery.
That is my worse fear, the dynamics of a family that are not 100% for the best interest of the child.

If Dad had visitation he should have been with the child not having the step mom baby sitting if it was not in the court order and known to all, in this world you only have to turn on the TV to see recent news of step mom's in compromising persons of interest.

Edited as I read where the step mom was "playing this potentially deadly game" What a sick women.
Dad used poor judgement, in my opinion........

I can understand the strain on mom every time she had left the boy go with dad and send her huge supportive hugs and prayers.
I hope there is a detailed investigation into the conditions of this injury and action is taken to protect this family...
But, my prayer train is out there for healing of the child and comfort to the family.

I think any person who would have gone through this would be having nightmares. Heck...I have nightmares over a whole lot less than this.

Thank you for the update, I hope he continues to improve, and that the motor skills issues and stuttering are only temporary!

Wow...modern medicine is amazing. What a blessing to be in a coma a few days ago and now talking already and looking to go home midweek. I am continually thankful for the work doctors are able to do in these kinds of situations.

I know. Not even needing some rehab either. I'm totally amazed. I guess the prayers helped.

I know you didn't mean this the way it sounded, but for 14 years I was a stepmom. Even before I became a mom. It wasn't specifically spelled out in the agreement past infant/toddler stage. I was the main caregiver (not babysitter) for my stepson when he was at our house. I often picked him up from the bus stop, took him where he needed to be, took him shopping. I suppose his mother knew. Sometimes I was stricter on him safety wise than his mom ever was. I didn't agree with much she did in the safety area, but wasn't my call.

So as far as playing that ridiculous game goes, it is because she was a dumb person. Not because she was a stepmom. And really there have only been a handful of sensationlized stories about stepmoms. Yes it is sad when it happens and you wonder how someone could do that to a child. But everyday I see it on tv about stepdads and bio dads and bio moms and siblings and neighbors and friends of the family. I certainly wouldn't lump all of these people together.

In fact I trust my dd's future stepmom more than my ex......LOL.

Bond is set to insure that the person charged appears in court. There are few cases where someone is held without bail. She made bail so she is out.

This woman is an idiot. There are other things I would love to call her, but this is a family board.

"Loaded for bear" means to be prepared for any eventuality.

It is strange that we haven't heard anything about it on the news, Nancy Grace usually is all over stories like this, especially with it happening to a child, poor little guy.

Actually, you'd be surprised at how much stuff never makes the news. There are so many things that I am SURE will be on at least the local news, but there's not a peep. Sometimes you get a three sentence paragraph buried in the "Metro/State" section of the newspaper a few days later, but usually not even that.

Seriously, I'd say that 90-95% of the traumas we get where I work never make the news. And sadly, many of them have the "news-worthy-ness" (for lack of a better word) of this story. What you hear in the news is only the very tip of the iceberg. Stuff like this and worse happens every day.

I'm glad Dakota is recovering well. Someone said he wouldn't go to rehab, but my guess is that he already is getting such services even now. I pray he makes a full recovery, and that the step-mom is never allowed around children again.

I read another thread today which reminded me of this one. I just thought I'd check in and see if there was any new news regarding the recovery of the boy or the legal actions against the step mom. Very curious to hear how this wraps up.
