I was interested to read what others thought of the Grand Californian. Here's what I can tell you about its older neighbor, the Disneyland Hotel:
The rooms are very nice, not great. They've been spruced up -- but I think most of the hotel has been renovated by now, so that doesn't make THAT much of a difference.
The concierge lounge itself is so-so. A few tables, some couches, plus a pleasant and expansive view of Downtown Disney and the California Adventure.
The offerings? Also so-so. There were the predictable muffins and bagels at breakfast, cookies and crackers in the afternoon. They also offered various wines for tasting, and some intriguing salsa dip. Plus sodas, coffee, water. No big whoop.
There's also a private elevator to take you directly from the ground floor to the concierge lounge, which I believe is on the 14th floor. This was handy in the mornings, when we wanted to dash off to the parks.
They had one very busy concierge person in a desk near the door, handling phones and answering questions. She was able to locate a Dairy Queen for us nearby (my wife wanted a DQ fix!)
But was it worth it? No.
I can understand wanting to make use of concierge services at Disney World, where the array of activities and options is vast. So many shows to see, character meals to reserve, places to visit! But not at Disneyland. It's quite manageable without the extra help. And the few perks you get for the extra money are just not worth it.
However...we got a great deal on concierge for the Boardwalk in November. I'm eager to see how it compares.

by a giant hissing cockroach in the shower. Don't ask.
