I have been talking to a friend about Disney art. The art I have been talking about is production art used for disney productions both film and other areas. He is getting it confused with the art you see at Collectors editions and at the Art of Disney stores.

Can some explain the difference in value and everything of art that is actual used for something major on a disney film versus art that is made just to sell at a gallery.

Are you speaking of animation cels?

The value of any piece of art is in what it is and its rarity (and that's the extent of my knowledgeof art!)

Cels are very rare especially if originals and I do think they make copies. The original artwork of course is by someone who worked directly with Walt in its creation in one way or another.

Then you have the Disney artist of today making disney art and depicting some aspect of Disney, but it is created in the present. They are commissioned by a corporation. (like the Thomas Kinkade paintings!)

I believe though, you are arguing value and not everyone values everything.

I place great value in anything that was used in a movie--so exhibits like the Narnia exhibit, I just go ga ga over b/c they will have items that were used in the movie. I don't go ga ga over a Pooh ride or anything else even though I enjoy them. To me, the rarity of what I am seeing and the fact that it was used in the creationof a film--makes me happy and joyful.

I can't explain it. But I would personally place more value in animation cels or even cel copies (not lithographs!)

Thus, I believe that even though there is value and you place value in earlier Disney works that related to the creation of their animated features (if I am reading your post correctly), you have a friend who does not see it that way.

The intrinsic value of somehting only is as high as one is willng to pay for it. I

Well, you have production cells and everything else.

Production cells have the highest value, and everything else after that (the aftermarket cells) do down from there. These can be gicles and hand-drawn and mass-marketed cells and mass-marketed cells with hand-drawn backgrounds, but if they were NOT used to create an animated TV show or feature, they are not production cells.

Then again, production cells vary in value too. If you get a cell with one of the minor dwarves, it will certainly be less value than if you had a cell with Snow White and Dopey in the same cell. Then again, the minor dwarf would be worth much more than a cell with just a tree in it.

Also, TV cells are worth less than features. Shorts are less than Features, but more than TV.

For example, we own a production cell from one of the Roger Rabit shorts. It is a GREAT one with Roger in an action shot. If the near-same action shot was from the Feature, it would be worth about double or triple the current value.
