I've spent waaaaay too much time researching these destinations for our summer vacation. My teens are accostomed to Disney where they can go off by themselves for a few hours. Which of these would you chose? I'm hoping to find an area with shops and entertainment as well as beach that they can come and go with some independence. TIA

My parents took me and my best friend to Myrtle Beach for our high school graduation present during our spring break. This was about 13 years ago, but it was great for us. We were able to walk the beach, shop, and roam (within reason) on our own, and as a family visited Brookgreen gardens, broadway at the beach, and other destinations that weren't right on the strip. It was lots of fun and very affordable. We stayed one street back from the beach, so no view, but our room was a bargain!

I would definately recommend Myrtle Beach I have a teenage son and we have traveled to all 3 and there is definately more to do in Myrtle I live in VA and there is very little going on here and Outer Banks I love but last time I took my boys they were broed to tears

Not sure about Virginia Beach, but there is very little to do at the Outer Banks. We enjoy just relaxing at the beach but for teens.... my three are sooooo bored and end up playing xbox360 in the rental. Last summer we went to Myrtle Beach and we couldn't do everything on our list. There is sooooooooooo much of everything in MB. Definitely MB for teens. Plan to spend too much though, lol.

My vote is for Myrtle. OBX doesn't have a lot to do, in terms of places for teens to walk to. Virginia Beach does have a Boardwalk, but most of the rental cottages arent' close by there, so again, they'd have to drive.

Contact the VB tourism office. I think they have a "trolley" that runs up and down the main shopping area and might hit some hotels/cottages that are a little to far to walk from.

If you are staying close to the main commercial area all the things you are asking about are available right there. The only wild card is the distance from your place to the "action".

OBX is still on the sleepy side.

No experience with Myrtle Beach.

I have to vote against Va Beach. If your wanting your teens to have some things to do without driving then there really isn't much for them here at the oceanfront. There are alot of shops, restaurants, bars, and only a couple of actual "things to do" for them besides the beach itself which may become boring. We are going to Myrtle Beach on our way home from FL in June for the first time & I am very excited to compare the two. Just from looking on line there is waaay more to do at Myrtle Beach, plus I've always heard that it blows our oceanfront away. Good luck.

Oh, and OBX is very spread out, there really isn't a boardwalk area. You have to drive to everything. We like day trips there just to kinda relax though.

I live in VA and I wouls recommend Myrtle beach. Lots to do that will keep teens entertained. Definately no to Outer Banks. They would be bored
