Please! Help Stop Global Warming!!

Global warming is a myth-the earth goes through cycles of warmth and cold every century or so. When it's warm in the winter, everyone screams global warming, but during a cold winter, does anyone say the next Ice Age is coming?

Many are doing their parts to help keep the earth clean though. Even though I beleive global warming does not exist, I still recycle cans, paper, and other items. Anyone remember the exhaust blowing huge cars of the 70s, does anyone see plumes of exhaust coming out of today's vehicles, outside of the Dodge Caravan?

Have you done any research or seen an inconvenient truth or other documentaries on the subject?

For those who don't believe in global warming, just think about the earth's health ;)

I wrote for a weather news service. Their meteorologists (educated scientists in the subject of weather) did not think it was a myth. Sorry, but the scientists opinions count more than some uninformed, partisan disboard member. I really don't care about your opinion. You are entitled to your opinion, but that is all that it is - an opinion. Scientists who understand this stuff say it is happening and even the Dept. of the Interior (part of the Bush cabinet) is about to declare the polar bear an endangered species due to global warming.

I'm sure there is plenty of info on the net re: global warming beyond Al Gore's information. If you won't read his information, please take the time to read the information being published and produced by the scientists.

I won't debate whether or not global warming is real. I do know that it was announced earlier this week that polar bears need to be added to the endangered species list because their habitat is disappearing as the ice melts due to global warming. The story I saw on the news said that this was the first official acknowledgement of the US government that global warming is real.

For those of you wanting to help, the following little things can make a difference.

Use an insulated blanket on your water heater

Stop drinking bottled water. If you are concerned about tap water, install a filter.

Organize your life so that you make fewer small trips for things. In the long run, you will like having the extra time this saves.

Drive 55 mph. Cars are engines are constructed to be most efficient at 55mph. If you drive over 55 mph, you are burning more gas. In fact, the car makers are going to reissue their gas milage stats for the cars they produce since they were based on 55 mph speed limits. Since people don't drive 55 mph, they are not getting the milage advertized by the car makers.

IMHO, global warming is one of those issues where you cannot convince people who don't want to be convinced. People don't want to believe it is happening because it is an inconvenience. It is much easier to tell yourself it isn't happening and that I, as one person, couldn't change it anyway. In another ten years, there will be no debate. If nothing drastic has happened, the nay-sayers can say they told us so. If things continue as those of us who believe in global warming think they will continue, no one will be able to deny it. Unfortunately, by then, it may be too late.

Every little bit helps. I'm 22 (well 23 tomorrow)...

First off, Happy Birthday Tim. :bday:

Secondly, A lot of what we here is meant to scare us. You know, "If we don't do this, or don't do that," kind of a thing. Which is good, because it teaches us to do what's right for the environment. However, we've done a lot already that's not being reported. For instance, according to the EPA, since 1970, the "total emissions of the six principal air pollutants dropped by 53 percent." Here's the direct quote from the EPA's website:
Looking at Growth and Emissions
Each year EPA looks at emissions that impact the ambient concentrations of these pollutants. These annual emissions estimates are used as one indicator of the effectiveness of our programs. The graph below shows that between 1970 and 2005, gross domestic product increased 195 percent, vehicle miles traveled increased 178 percent, energy consumption increased 48 percent, and U.S. population grew by 42 percent. During the same time period, total emissions of the six principal air pollutants dropped by 53 percent.
Here's the chart that they use

So while it's good to recyle and use less energy, don't believe all you hear. We are making a difference.

Our new washer uses 69% less water as it is a front loader. It also uses less energy, as does the new dryer. BTW we did not buy new because we wanted to (like people who throw out a 3 year old TV to get the newest model) but because we had to!
I wish I could use a dryer line in the summer but they are not allowed in our subdivision.

Global warming is definitely NOT a myth. Whether humans are effecting it is a question being debated at this time. Several times in history global warming has led to mass extinctions, including the near-extinction of the human race at one period. So here is the question, do we just sit back and wait?

If a meteor was aimed at earth, would we try to find some way to overcome it? Or would we just sit and wait and say "meteors have hit the earth before" I equate these issues. If we can do something, anything, to slow this down until a real solution is found , we should do so. I dont think we have found the answer yet. I think we need our best and brightest working on the issue. For now, we should do everythig we can.

Thank you!! :)

We can go back and forth showing graphs by different organizations and facts and figures and we'd still come back to the same thing: I believe it's happening and you don't. ;)

Whether you believe it or not, I think we can all agree that pollution isn't good for the environment and that we, as humans, should be doing all we can to conserve energy and resources.

This is from truthout.org:

Here are 10 things you can do in the new year to do your part for the environment, including some "go green" tips from David's Web site, http://www.StopGlobalWarming.org.

Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Replace three frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs and save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide and about $60 a year. The Council on the Environment and Jewish Life is organizing a campaign called "How Many Jews Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb?" to encourage synagogues and other Jewish groups to replace conventional bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which last four times longer but use 25 percent of the energy.

Save the water bottle. Sick of watching your recycle bin fill up with water bottles? Time to buy a reusable water bottle. REI, the outdoor equipment store, carries a 16-ounce Nalgene bottle, $7.95, in five colors, made from polycarbonate plastic; it has a wide mouth and is easily washed. Eastern Mountain Sports carries SIGG bottles from Switzerland, including an 0.6-liter lightweight stainless steel model that is a replica of a 1941 Swiss Army bottle, $20, in blue or red.

Pull the plug on electronics and chargers. Mobile phones, BlackBerry devices, iPods, digital cameras and other electronics use energy, even if they are turned off, if the charger is still going.

Take shorter showers. Water for bathing accounts for two-thirds of all water-heating costs.

Buy a hybrid car. Hollywood actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz have glamorized them; David even convinced her husband's HBO comedy series to have his character drive one on the show.

Create idle-free zones. Schools, churches, synagogues, libraries, shopping malls and anywhere that accommodates a large number of vehicles are prime spots for signs requiring vehicle engines to be turned off to help cut fuel emissions and improve air quality. David helped institute a no-idle rule in the parking lot of her children's school in Southern California to cut down on the "carbon dioxide haze" created by parents' idling vehicles. "You can do the same at your school, temple or church," David said. "Ask that a sign be posted outside that says, 'Turn off your vehicle.'"

Buy local food products. You may pay a bit more in the grocery store, but buying locally grown products helps the earth because less fuel is required to transport your products to market. Additionally, buying goods that require less packaging may help reduce your garbage.

Bring cloth bags to the market. Tote your own cloth bags to the store instead of plastic and paper bags, reducing waste and requiring no additional energy. David also suggests carrying your own garment bag to the drycleaners to avoid bringing home plastic bags and wire hangers.

Put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat in your home.

Use recycled paper. Switch your home and business paper products to 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper, saving countless trees and five pounds of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.

Those are really good tips, Liberty Belle.:thumbsup2

Some good suggestions here. I just wanted to add a couple.

Buy items with as little packaging as possible and in recyclable packaging. Buy large amounts when you can -a bigger bottle is better then 2 small.

Especially try to buy recycled products. Right now, we have more paper going in to be recycled then can be used but if everyone bought recycled paper (computer, toilet, paper towels, greeting cards etc) we would use the surplus and the prices would come down. Ask your local store to carry these products.

Turn your heat down and get out your blankets! Nothing feels better then snuggling under a blanky! Wear your wooly (recycled) sweaters.

Shop at places like the Greater Good stores and National Wildlife.

We can make a difference!!:cool1:

I too suggest everyone watch An Inconvenient Truth. Then educate yourself through other sources as well.

After seeing the movie I was really tempted to start a thread called, "Global warming will wash away Disney World!" But I resisted. :)

I did some research for a patron the other day (I am a Librarian).
I was actually shocked at how much information there is out there that proves GW is happening and will change our lives for the worse within OUR LIFETIMES. :scared1: Not 1000 years from now. Nearly all of the "GW is a fallacy" articles/information was either very old or had no research to back it up like the other articles do.

National Geographic has a number of articles on the topic as well as many other highly reliable sources. I'll post some links if I get a second!

I think a lot of people want to believe that it isn't true. Many of the facts they state are true. yes the earth does go through natural cycles, but when scientists prove that what we're heading toward is disasterous and we are causing it (or at least even a small part of it), how can you ignore it?:confused3

We're not just spouting this because we're having a warm winter! It is real!

What exactly should we do?

No wait..I see the suggestions.

I can't think that a lot of people will give up convenience voluntarily to take these steps. Best way is to vote in people who will pass laws in that direction.

I am not interested in a hybrid car (before you rip into me, note that I don't drive to work) and I'm not really going to take the time to check where things came from and how much energy was expended to make them before I buy them.

For those of you who live in Florida (there are other programs available in many other states), for a minimal price of $10/month, you can sign up for the Sunshine Energy Program through FPL, a green energy program which uses the extra cost to generate and develop solar and wind powered electricity. In just one year as a Sunshine Energy customer, you can avoid over 8,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions nationwide – as much as a car would produce in almost 9,000 miles of driving. We signed up immediately after watching An Inconvenient Truth. We use compact fluorescent bulbs in all of our light fixtures, have our A/C set on a timer to minimize energy output, our home's water heater is warmed by the exhaust captured from our a/c condenser (during the hot summer months, we can completely cut off electric to our water heater), our new car runs on flex-fuels and we also recycle (I don't know anyone who doesn't anymore).

Thank you!! :)

I didn't make myself clear, and for that I apologize. I do believe that global wamring is happening, however, what I meant is that all the doom and gloom we hear is probably hyped up more than it needs to be. Why? Just look at the chart, it show's that air pollution is down 53%. Which means the air is getting cleaner and we are therefore making a difference. So all we hear is, "We need to do something about it now," well, we are. And that chart proves that we are doing something, which is making a difference. Now, here's a paragraph that shows that 66% of Americans believe that the air quality is getting worse:
Individuals were asked whether or not they "believe that the nation's air has gotten better or worse in the last ten years." Air pollution statistics prove that two-thirds (66%) of Americans feel that the nation's air population has gotten worse, while close to three-in-ten (28%) feel the nation's air quality has gotten better. The statistics are consistent with air pollution statistics from the 1999 study where six-in-ten (61%) respondents felt that the air pollution had gotten worse, and only two-in-ten (22%) felt that the air pollution had improved.
http://www.cleanairprogress.org/clean-air-pollution/air-pollution-statistics.asp
Why did I post this paragraph? To show that not only do people need to educate themselves on GW, but also what we have done and that it is making a difference. So I apologize for not making myself clear. I just wanted to point out that we are making a difference.
