Because I'm gonna kill him!! He's got horrible nasty breath and so I decided to brush his teeth. He won't hold still or open his mouth for me at all. He even growled at me :furious: So I sent him to his room to think about his attitude for a while and because I was losing my temper. How do I get this dog to hold still and open his mouth? I can't take another night of him breathing in my face!

You scared me!!! I thought something was wrong with him - I was ready to donate blood!!!

What about a mint? :teeth:

Your title scared me too!

Mine don't like to have their teeth brushed either. Have you considered allowing his vet to do a dental? After I found a tumor in one of my pug's mouths last month, I dedicated myself to having the regular dentals.

My friends poodle had really bad breath and then she noticed that several of her teeth were loose (she wasn't eating well which prompted her to look at the teeth). Took her to the vet and they ended up pulling 11 teeth!

I hope that's not the case for your pooch, but it may explain why he wouldn't want you to look into his mouth.

You better go and invest in some doggy mints.

Sophie hates getting her teeth brushed too. You would think she would like the chicken flavored toothpaste, guess not.

Don't make us have another "Save Petey Joseph" rally!

I barely recovered from the last one!! :)

Good thing I happened to be around today to help out my good friend Pete! Mom goes to the vet and gets me C.E.T. made by Virbac. It's an oral hygiene chew and has the *same enzymes* as human toothpaste. (These can't be bought in the run of the mill pet stores.) They have a website that I think you should check out...CETDental.com

I'd show you how nice my teeth look but people would think I was smiling and that's not macho! ;) The Spider

Just called the vet and they have CET in stock. I'm running over there now! Can't take anymore, his breath smells like the inside of the cat box!

Do you have a cat?? Are you sure he hasn't been snacking on the crunchies in the litter box?

Do you let Petey Joseph kiss you?? I sure wouldn't!!!! :rotfl2:

Well you sure did scare me! Is Petey still in his room? :teeth:

Do come back and update us on this new chew for Petey. Sure hope it helps! :scratchin Maybe this bad breath issue was the reason Spider threatened to whip Petey's butt that time. :confused3

Wow, that scared me! :scared: :rotfl:

Can't help you - it is Dh's job to do our dog's teeth cleaning, but our dog is good about it. She actually likes the taste of the doggie toothpaste! :confused3 Another thing she likes is Pedigree Breath Buster dog biscuits. Maybe you could give them a try.

I brush my boys each week or so - Harley is easier to handle because he's only 12 pounds (Winston is a nightmare) but it takes 2 of us to do each of them. One to hold and pry the mouth open and the other to do the brushing. Thankfully, they both love the toothpaste flavor so I use LOTS of it.

I don't like the thought of having regular cleanings so I do this to avoid that - Harley is almost 2 and the vet said his teeth are in fantastic shape and don't need a cleaning for quite a bit longer. I know that eventually they will need them I just want to avoid it as long as possible.

Do you have someone else that can help? I think 2 people tackling Petey might work better =)

I gave him a CET and he didn't seem to know what it was at first. Then he ran off with it and probably stashed it under the bed for later. His breath does smell a tad bit better though. And yes, I've caught him dining at the the "doggie deli" :crazy2:  and no, mommy doesn't ask for kisses anymore :lmao:

Petey is back on parole. I only keep him in there long enough for me to cool down. He doesn't remember an hour later why he's there anyway. I'll have the upper hand before the nights over though...IT'S BATH NIGHT :rotfl:

Holy Crap! You scared the beejeebers out of me with the title of this thread. I was going to throw Reilly and Lauri into the car and head down there to save his little furry apricot behind..lol

In the meantime, we have found something that temporarily improves their little "seasoned kisses" (Lauri gets them much more than I do. :rotfl: ) Anyway, Pedigree has a package of soft bones called "DentaStixs". When Reilly is getting a bit..umm.. ripe between cleanings we pass him one of these and it actually does take the stink away for a few days.

I just can't get over how much he looks like Reilly!

I got a little worried at the title too!!

My Sally had the WORST breath...and I found doggie altoids at PetSmart...she actually eats them! And they helped!

So do activated charcoal bones (I think Mother Hubbard makes them)...but they don't like them as well.

Hope the CET works for you! I might have to see if my vet has it!

(and Petey looks too cute after a bath!)

sounds like someone has been enjoying kitty fritters with extra sprinkles
My dog gets his teeth, face and tongue scrubbed if he does that.
Good luck.
