We (me, DH and DD2) are and have been considering DVC for years. We are finally seriously considering taking the plunge but I'm still debating because of a couple of issues.
1. We were already planning a 8 night trip to BCV in a 2 bedroom paying cash for December. I we use points it's 323.
2. We want to stay at BCV predominantly but it kills me to buy where we will have 15 less years.
3. We were offered 160 points for 16970 with last years points with purchase. I know we can get this significantly cheaper if we go resale but how likely will it be for us to still book BCV?

Please help with this decision.

Thank you so much,

Jamie

UPDATE: Thank you so much for all of your help. WE finally decided and went with 160 points at BCV from disney. I know that we paid more than we would have with resale but it works best for us at this time. We booked the trip that we wanted for December and are absolutely thrilled. Can't wait to learn more about how to use our DVC the best way possible.

I think that if you buy resale, it will take about 2 months. At that point, you will only be 8 months out from December (a very popular DVC time) so I think the chances of getting a BCV reservation will be much harder.

Going through Disney will be more expensive, but they might be able to get you your reservation since you will have the points within a day or so to make those reservations.

If you know you want to be at BCV and will be traveling at times, like December, if the future, they I would buy there and not worry about those extra years. As more people become members, the harder it will be to get exactly what you want at the 7 month mark.

We bought BLT because we want to stay there. We could have saved about $5000 going resale at SSR, but to us, it wasn't worth the chance that BLT would not be available at 7 months for what we wanted (SV rooms).

Over the course of what we anticipate to be many, many years of DVC trips, it really didn't work out to be that much more. Even if you cost it out over 10 years only, that puts it at only around $500 per year--well worth it to me to own at the place I love.

Good luck!

I would think that reserving 8 months out would be a lot easier than booking 7 months out.

Are there specific dates in December that you must go to WDW?

When in December were you planning your trip?

Do you go to Disney every December? If you go every other year, the 160 points would be about perfect.

Make sure to consider the monetary value of the 160 2009 points in making your decision, as well as the cost of your vacation.

At even $700/nt. - you are talking about $5600!!

That's a chunk of money!!

It's so hard to say about getting BCV this year but you never know. After we bought our first resale I was able to book the second week of Dec at 6 months out but we did a split stay. 3 nights at OKW and 3 night at BCV. I could have had all nights at OKW or SSR and this was for 2 BR's.

I can't help too much on the decision to buy but if you go every year or every other year and stay in the Villas then I'd say yes and wouldn't worry too much about where you stay for this one year - you'll have 31 more years to stay at BCV. I imagine what you are paying cash for the 2BR would cover a good chunk of the purchase.

I would not buy a large BCV contract direct. If you stay 2BR's you might even be better off with a larger contract and could get closer to 200 points buying resale for the same price as the 160 direct.

I don't see any previous history of you staying at BCV before.

You need to stay at the resort in the room size that you would normally stay in after you buy.

You will be spending a lot of money on something new to you, that just doesn't make sense to me.

What if you don't like the location stuck behind the BC, what about the views or lack there of, the lay out of the room.

You could rent from a owner for your next stay and maybe save some money.

Thank you all for all of your responses. We do typically go every other year or so. We'd typically want a studio or one bedroom but this trip we planned to going with my parents before we'd even discussed buying into DVC. We haven't stayed at the BCV before, but have stayed at the yacht club and fell in love with the location and the pool. That is what sold us on BCV. Staying somewhere else this trip isn't really an option. It's the only way that I sold this vacation to my parents who aren't really disney people ( how is that possible). I agree that it makes sense to do it before this trip. In fact, DH and I have agreed that if we don't do DVC right now we probably aren't going this year. I can't see throwing away 6000 if it isn't going towards DVC. I'm still not sure what we are going to do but I appreciate the help.

Thanks again,

Jamie

Not sure if your 300+ points you need for this years vacation are the points needed for you and your parents accommodations. You should purchase what you'll need long term. If you'll receive 09 points also, you should have enough points for this trip if you purchase 1/2 the total needed. (This is also a good idea if you plan on going every other year).:thumbsup2

It's unlikely you can get your Dec reservation changed over to points at BCV if you buy resale and you might not be able to get it even if you went retail. You might get something, esp SSR or OKW. If you'd do most trips at BCV, it really makes no sense to buy anywhere else. If you are happy staying at other resorts but want to try for BCV most trips and waitlist when needed, SSR or an extended OKW option might be your best value. I do suspect they'll extend BCV & BWV at some point but there are no guarantees they will.

If you buy BCV... you can always add on BLT or any future offerings. We own at both... BCV runs through 2042 and BLT 2060. If and when a contract extension at BCV is offered... we will most likely do that.

What do your parents like?

Everyone is different, but I would have an easier time selling my folks on Ft. Wilderness than Beach Club.

A lot of us here on the DIS have been heart broken trying to share our appreciation of Disney with our relatives. :sad1:

:)When we purchased last year one of the selling points was being able to use points for an Oct trip already planned. That is how the Guide sold us on it that day. He got us 2 studio SV at AKV. If you buy direct from Disney I would make sure that your Guide stay on the phone with you to insure that these reservations happen. I can't imagine he couldn't pull some strings to get it for you...it is one of their best selling gigs. Worked for us.

If your Dec trip has to be BCV and you decide to purchase then the best option is to talk to your guide and tell them it's a condition of the sale. They may be able to check and immediately reserve a 2BR for you if it's available before you sign so that you know for certain you have the reservation you need.

A call to see if this can even be done may help you quickly make a decision.

Although BCV is a better deal thru resale if you have $6K that is going towards a room that could go towards the purchase then you've more than made up the difference of buying direct vs. resale.

I'll throw in my 2 cents to muck up the issue. Last minute plans can be the most frustrating and can end up being the most fun. Like you we literally agonized over whether to join or not. Once we made up our mind the question turned to when to take the plunge. For us it was timing. I guess you could say that the stars just happened to be in alignment. An overseas owner wanted to unload 300 points quickly that just happened to have another 300 banked. Then, right after that, a 100 pt add-on turned up with another overseas owner who threw in a years maintenance fees on top of the discounted price. It was an offer we couldn't refuse. There are deals to be found if your patient, whether you go through Disney or Resale. Since we purchased years back DVC has offered some very competitive incentives periodically that were more appealing than going with a resale. Again, it's all about patience and timing.

There is no doubt that you are going to become a DVC member. If you want to take the plunge now you may have to adjust the expectations for this trip. You may not get the accommodations you want at BCV. That's okay because you will have next year, and the year after that, and the year after that . . . On the other hand you may be pleasantly surprised. This past year we procrastinated and did not make our Christmas reservations at the 11 month window, nor the 7 month window. We dragged our feet and finally decided to make our Christmas week reservations for our home resort in August. We were put on a waiting list and, before the end of October, had our rooms. In fact, whenever we've used the wait list we've gotten what we wanted. Only once did we have to accept a resort in which we didn't plan to stay. That ended up being OK because we had a very nice experience that we would not have had or planned otherwise. Even though we prefer our home resort we have never been disappointed in any of the DVC resorts in which we have stayed. Oh yes, we resort hop on during our stays so we can have the best of all the World.

:thumbsup2

2. We want to stay at BCV predominantly but it kills me to buy where we will have 15 less years.

I don't think that anyone has addressed this issue with you, but do keep in mind that if you buy 160 points at BLT, it will cost you $18,400 (a difference in only $1,430 from what you would be paying for your BCV contract *and* you will get your additional 15 years *and* they are offering 2009 BLT points as well). I'm not trying to sway you away from BCV (you obviously want that to be your home), but that might be something to really consider before pulling the trigger on DVC given that the cost between BCV and BLT are soooooo close yet you do get the extra 15 years with BLT. And, who knows -- your Guide may have be able to book you at BCV at the 6 month mark if you make that a condition of the sale. Good luck! :goodvibes

Here is a crazy thought. SPLIT BUY .. Buy direct from Dis for 160 points. Use last years and this years (I think they are still offering this) for youe Dec trip.

Then buy a seperate contract resale for the additional points you want sounded like 140. Then you have no rush and get the best of both worlds. You could even wait a month or two, with no reason to rush.

I know some say buy where you want to stay. Depending on income levels, I couldnt justify the difference. For us 4K more and 12 more years pushed us into SSR. I think it was 69$ - 73$ resale for SSR and 85$ - 89$ for BCV. That was a big factor, as we are okay with staying at SSR or split stays if needed. So far 3 trips with points all got BCV. (We don't currently go when it is busy. Late Aug, mid Jan, April non spring break.) If you won't feel "ripped off" if you had to stay at SSR or OKW some times, buy the 1st at BC from dis and resale at SSR after. Your SSR contract will save about 30- 40$ per point up front and every year lower MF, and have 12 more years for 1/2 your points. Also make sure use years line up. good luck on your dec. :wizard:

Congratulations and welcome home! I know you will love DVC!!!
