why some families sitting on their roofs do NOT want to get rescued? I just don't get it....

Any thoughts on this...?

I've not seen anything like that, so I don't know. :confused3

possibly they dont want to leave all that they have behind
possibly they are drug addicted and fear if they leave they dont know where their next fix will come
possibly that place is all that they have ever known and the fear of going someplace new totally terrifies them.

There was a news channel showing rescuers pleading with this woman who had a 3 yr old child to leave and she didnt want to.

Some believe in staying with the only thing they have - they've survived floods before, they feel if they wait, the waters will recede, they do not have communication to understand the severity of the situation.

Some cant leave their pets behind, thhey believe they are dependent on the love of their pet.

One boat stopped and talked to a lady, they tried to explain the severity, but she didnt believe them, this boat had a doctor on board and asked if she was alone, she first replied yes, he asked about children, she admitted she had a 3yr old, he got extremely upset saying her child's life was in danger NOW... (she reported others in the neighborhood had boats and were getting supplies from the Winn Dixie)

She and her child got in the boat.

You have to remember that these people haven't been watching the news. They don't realize that it isn't just their neighborhood that's flooded, and they don't realize it will be a long time before services are restored and the water is gone. It's not the first time these people's houses have flooded. NOLA floods all the time, and not just from hurricanes. There's a lot of flash flooding, too. The floods make the pumps stop working, then they fix the pumps, and everything is okay again. They don't realize it's not the same old story this time.

I think many waiting it out now figured the water will receed and life will be somewhat back to normal. I don't think they realize the situation, other than their little part of the city they can see.
They are probably afraid they will lose everything through looting.

I am having trouble understanding the thinking process here too. They have been told for years that new orleans will fill up like a bowl and indeed it did.

I know. It would be like CA having a major earthquake and being totally shocked, and unprepared.

CNN had a reporter walking around live a few minutes ago on Bourbon Street. He was in some areas where he was wading in water 2 feet deep, but as he walked along, he could see places with water a few inches and areas that were dry.
The reporter ran into a woman who owns one of the most famous clubs in the French quarter (he didn't say what the club was, but he introduced her as Ms. Owen). He asked when she had come back and she said she had never left. She had planned to ride out the storm in her building which in her words was "a fortress, very strong" and she could see no reason to leave since the building had come thru hurricanes before and she knew where the potential flood areas were.
She had food and water stored up and said there never was any flood water in the area of the French Quarter that she could see from her home. She said the French Quarter had actually come out of the hurricane in pretty good shape. She had expected there might be some flooding in the areas around the French Quarter, and she was just out today since she could see the water had gone down some.
I don't think she had a clue of how bad it was any place else. Like you said, she just knew what was going on in her little part of the city.
She just looked like someone out on a nice Sunday stroll on a sunny day.

I saw that too. The part I saw they mentioned her club name a few times, but I don't recall it. I never would have heard of it anyway.
I know there are places like that.
But they are showing Live shots of heliocopter rescues. Some are accepting the help. Some are passing, and it has been noted they may want rescued later. :confused3 I hope they are set up for the long haul.

There are alot of potential reasons, including that the people are scared and traumatized and afraid to trust anyone. Also, the fact that they haven't had access to news might hamper their perspective of the extent of the damage.

Our homes are our fortresses....where do YOU want to go after a really bad day? Can you imagine leaving your home (even flooded), and walking away from all you had worked for, your pets, your pictures, everything- and realizing you may NEVER come back? Every day you stayed would make it harder. It would be very hard for any of us.......now add 5-6 days of no food, no water, probably no medication and intense heat. You are physically ill, not thinking straight, and all you want is what you know and are familiar with......I am sure that once the people LEAVE they will realize it is the correct choice- but it would be a very, very hard choice to do at the time.

I agree that they are probably traumatized. I mean, who wouldn't be? But, shouldn't they be made to leave? If they don't take the help, they will probably die right there. It just doesn't make any sense to me?
