OP I'm glad things are going better for you and your daughter. 
FWIW, obviously their family did do things for their daughter on v day. My mom got us little things, just like we made her valentine's day cards. I've never bought into it being for romantically involved people, especially since they had us make cards for our parents while we were in school. If a kid can give a parent a card, obviously a parent can give something to a child.
I would just assume that in *their* family before, they did give gifts to her, and this year without the OP reminding him, he didn't do it. Wouldn't be a deal in *your* house, but obviously it was in the OP's.

I am glad that things are going good for you. But I do have to comment on the above. I never get my kids things for Valentines day. They are my children, not my husband, boyfriend or lover. To me this is what Valentines days is for.
