Please help! Kindle or Nook?

That makes a lot of sense.

But he's a semi-professional photographer (when he's not teaching.) He pretty much ALWAYS travels with a laptop so he can download the pictures. So he already has the internet access. Am I right in understanding that it's incidental to the use of the Kindle-- just an "extra" once the books are downloaded?

Yes, Alice - that's right. If he almost always has a laptop anyway the browser on the KIndle wouldn't be important. Get him the wifi only and buy more books with the savings!!

True. You only need access to download books. Once a book is downloaded onto the unit you do NOT need to be connected. In fact, turning off the wireless extends the battery life (three to four weeks of reading! Woo!)

With the Kindle, you can use the wireless 3G anywhere in the world to browse websites, including sending and receiving mail. You are not limited as to which sites you access. Mobile sites work beautifully. Nice not to have to find a computer or bring one.

So you CAN check email on the Kindle with 3G and NOT on the NOOK?

Are the pre-owned ones from Overstock good enough to give as a gift? Do they come with original box and documentation? Thinking of getting a Nook for my mom and getting it at this price sure would help the budget, :) Might even be able to squeak in a cover for it then.

I got my Nooks today. They came in a Barnes and Noble box, which surprised me. I thought they would come in a overstock.com box.

Anyway, the Nooks are in the original nook box. It comes with a power adapter, usb cable and battery (already installed). The only issue is that it has a clear sticker on the side that holds the box closed that says "Certified Preowned Nook". You could remove that no problem before giving it. But it may not be able to be returned if you remove that? I don't know.

Thank you so much for remembering to come back here and post what condition it arrived in! I think I've actually decided to go the Kindle route though after researching them both a lot further, lol. But thanks again!!

Enjoy your new Kindle when it arrives!! It's a great, great product...

That is correct. You can web browse on 3G on the Kindle anywhere in the world (free of charge) - including webmail sites like gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.

I just wanted to tell anyone who was waiting to buy a Kindle that they may not want to wait anymore. The international kindles are sold out (there's no difference between them and the US kindles, just wear they ship to). They now have a 2-3 month waiting period.

So if you want to get a kindle for yourself or someone else for Christmas, I'd go ahead and grab it very soon. I doubt they'll have any black Friday deals on something they have a problem keeping in stock.

Hold out don't buy it lol. Nah just joking buy what you like the most. I know I'm holding out for sony to make a new version in color eink. Till then I'll keep my sony. I have an evo so I can go online for everything else on my phone.

Just wanted to say Thanks to the OP for posting this! & to everyone for answering!!!! My dd (16) wants the new color nook for Christmas...doubtful there willbe any thing off that $249 pricetag, but that's ok it will be her only gift.

I just got my nookcolor yesterday and I have to say it is pretty awesome. The colors are really vibrant (magazines look great), pages turns are super quick, the internet browser works great - I was able to post on facebook, check email. etc. and the kids books were truly wonderful (my 4 year old twins had a great time having the books read to them). I can highly recommend the nookcolor!

I have the Nook 3g wifi and I can check email on mine.

Just to clear up any confusion some may have over internet access on the Nook, (and I have noticed that there is much confusion over Nook vs Kindle and what their 3G service can or cannot do) here is the information directly from the Barnes and Noble site:

You can access the Beta Web browser on your NOOK by tapping the browser icon on the Home screen. The NOOK browser will only connect to the Internet when NOOK is connected to a Wi-Fi® hotspot. If you are not connected to a hotspot, or only connected via the 3G connection, you will be unable to access Web sites.

So, yes you can go online using WI-FI but no, you cannot use the 3G connection to access the net. Nook's 3G is only available to connect directly to Barnes and Noble for the sole purpose of downloading books when you are unable to connect to a WI-FI service. The Kindle does have the option of using the net and checking emails with their 3G service if that is an important feature to someone.

A word of warning:

In the past 4 days, I've checked 3 Targets and a Staples; no one has any of the $139 Kindles in stock. They're flying off the shelves.

I just ordered mine through Amazon.

Thanks Jayme, for the heads up. I had no idea that it would be an issue!
