The long and the short of the story is that the last time we went to the dentist for a check up he was concerned that DD's (Vanessa, 12) last two baby teeth had not come out. He took xrays which showed the two adult teeth are buried but unfortunately not in the right place.

She was referred to an orthodontist who took more xrays and confirmed the position. He said her best chance is to have the two baby teeth taken out (we have an appointment in two weeks' time) and to go on the waiting list with the hospital for an operation.

We had a pre-op appointment at the hospital this morning but will have to wait around 6 months for the actual operation. They will apparently cut the gum in at least a couple of places to find the two buried teeth and attach gold thread to them. She will have lots of stitches and be very sore for a few days. The operation will be in the morning and provided everything goes well we can take her home at tea time. :scared1: Once everything is settled she then has to return to the orthodontist who will attach the gold threads to a brace in the hope of moving the teeth across and down.

Although hopefully the end result will be good, it all sounds quite nasty. DD will have two gaps until the operation, then the operation and then a brace. DD came out of the hospital in tears :scared: even though she usually hides her feelings outside!

Sorry to have gone on but please could you send her some messages to cheer her up. Many thanks.

Sending you hugs and best wishes. My son has had nothing but dental problems quite similar actually, he's now got extra teeth growing over existing adult teeth, he looks like a vampire when he smiles, but being a teenager doesn't do that very often!!!!(that's unfair on my part - he does). The dentist wants to refer him to the hospital but because of an existing heart condition we don't want him to go through any surgery that's not vital, neither does he and we've left the decision up to him. Good luck with getting it sorted.

Awww hugs to your DD, I have had a lot of orthodontic treatment from the age of 10 to 16 and it was hard, and painful but well worth it in the end.
Good luck to you all! :wizard:

 ive had no end of dental problems as well, im sure your dd will be very brave !

I had my wisdom teeth out at the start of the year so I can sympathise a little! I found the swelling worse than any pain (and I'm a wimp so hopefully it won't be too bad!)

Best to get it sorted whilst you're young - my friend has finally got her brace at the age of 30 :goodvibes

Best wishes

I have had that done!! I had it done to 5 teeth tho!! Basically what happened to me (i was around i think 15) was i went into the "special doctors office" and they gave me the option of getting anesthesia or get a shot to calm me down with some kinda pills to calm me down so i went for the shot and the pills so that they didnt put me "under" b/c it would have costed a lot of money to do that and the other stuff did basically the same thing only I was awake.

so what the dr did was give me the stuff and i sat there till it kicked in and then they went ahead with the surgery with pulling the teeth and then exposing the gums away from the adult teeth. I was there for a good hr or so I think. I was then given some stiches for some of the area which disolved within a week or 2 i think and the i had to go back for another visit to check-up and then I was done with the dr and was able to get my braces put on.

after the surgery i had to be wheeled to the car b/c of the "drugs" I was on and had to eat the soft food for a few days but then I was fine. If you have any other questions let me know!!!

I know it's not quite the same, but I work with students/tweens every day.

So many of them are getting braces (I know it's not the same) -

but I always tell them how LUCKY they are to have a beautiful smile in their future. I wish i would have gotten them, but I didn't get the luxury.

I know that it sounds horrible and painful now, but just think of how beautiful your teeth and smile are going to be in your future. How will it look or feel if you don't get it done?

I know that it doesn't sound like it, but you are SO lucky to have the resources to get what you need and be taken care of.

My 14 yr old DD has just gone through something very similar! her adult teeth had started to grow in behind her baby teeth, she's had four teeth removed, wore a retainer for 3 months and will finally be getting her track braces next week. If it's any consolation for your DD it was unpleasant and painful but not as bad as she had expected.

 for your DD and you, it's not nice having to put them through pain but it will be worth it when it's all over.

sending lots of hugs to your dd

this week my 5 year old had to have 11 teeth out under general aths and it was awful

there really is nothing worse then dental pain & problems :sad1:

 and :wizard: to your daughter. Tell her I sympathise - I am struggling with teething of wisdom teeth at the moment and I think I am far too old to be teething at 28! Hope everything goes well, I'm sure it will.
