Ate at ESPN last Aug (08) - huge portions- good food - but small and cramped dining area. We went at lunch and walked right in.
Ate at Big River Grille several years ago - nice outside seating- excellent food- small portions and a bit pricey. Hope this helps.

We tried out Spoodles for the first time earlier this year and loved it. I ordered the cheesecake for dessert but it was quickly stolen by my wife. I enjoyed the Cape May Clambake but I am not hard to impress. The seafood was good and fresh. Over all it was a good meal. The mushroom Filet at LeCellier is always a hit. I have only had lunch at the ESPN club. It's hard to screw up a burger so I don't know how the rest of the food there is.

we ate at spoodles and we were pleasantly surprised - food and service was great!

captains grille food was also good - not a lot of atmosphere but we enjoyed our meal

cape may was a good buffet tho i think boma and biergarten are better buffets and the atmosphere better at both (cape may is in the middle of the lobby of the beach club...)

chefs is always good!

hurricane hannahs has very good sandwiches and chicken fingers - very nice to sit outside under the umbrellas and look at the lake!

espn - typical "bar food" - very good wings, etc ---doesn't feel like disney to me ... how about dinner at prime time (just take the ferry over to dhs) - lots of fun and the food is pretty good!

hope this helps!:goodvibes

We've eaten at most of these places, at one time or another - Le chefs and Le Cellier are standouts - last time we were at Cape Mays we were disappointed - thought the clams had gone downhill - and 1900 is a delightful place for breakfast - Haven't done Norway since in became a character place. Have fun.

Chefs de France - wonderful atmosphere, great food. :goodvibes
1900 Park Fare (breakfast) - characters are very good, food is okay.
Chef Mickeys (dinner) - food is okay, great for atmosphere (monorail above) and characters.
Le Cellier - Great food, no brainer if your on the dining plan.
Boardwalk bakery - YUM-O

Spoodles- dinner was good, loved the appetizers
Cape May- we enjoy both the breakfast and the dinner, clams, mussels, clam chowder and Oreo bons bons
Akershus-more for the characters than the food, food was okay
1900 Park Fare- breakfast very good and the Mad Hatter was very funny
Chef Mickey's-again more for the characters than the food, desserts are excellent
Mama Melrose-had dinner many years ago and did not like it at all
Le Cellier-all time favorite, love the mushroom fillet, cheese soup, pretzel bread and creme brulee
Boardwalk Bakery-sandwhiches are good, desserts are excellent

We like to try new places but love our favorite! Have fun!

Thank you everyone! So far these seem like great choices for us. Here are Disney restaurants we loved when we were there in July:

-Biergarten (dinner)
-Crystal Palace (dinner)
-Chef Mickey's (breakfast)
-Hollywood & Vine (breakfast)
-1900 Park Fare (dinner)
-Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner)
-Tangierine Cafe (lunch)
-Cosmic Ray's (lunch)

So from this you could judge more how our tastes are. We are generally pretty easy to please, not too picky. But we do enjoy good food!

-ESPN Club -good food and sports atmosphere if you are already there but wouldnt make a special trip for it
-1900 Park Fare-enjoyed this breakfast!
-Chef Mickey's -not a fan of CMs for dinner
-Mama Melrose-enjoy dinner here every trip
-Le Cellier-love it
-Boardwalk Bakery -good for treats but not for a meal

I can only give opinions on two places..first being, Le Cellier. This is a MUST for us every trip. The food is excellent and we've had the best servers there.

We had a good experience at Chefs De France last trip. The waiter was lovely and the food was good. It won't be a "Must" for us every trip, but we'd definitely go back again.

Akurshus is a great princess breakfast, but it doesn't look like you have any little girls so I don't know if it's what you'd be looking for? But if any of your family does like the princesses it's great too see them. I also really enjoyed the breakfast there. The hot food they bring right to your table, which I liked because it means one less trip getting up and going to the buffet. The buffet is very nice too, all kinds of breads, fruits, and ds enjoyed the fact they had salami. It was the only thing he liked about having to go to the princess breakfast. HA!
Did you try Whispering Canyon Cafe in July? Based on the other restaurants you liked, I would think you'd really love it.

We have eaten at several of your choices. Here goes...

Spoodles we loved the location and the atmosphere. The food was very good. Would definetly do again.

Akershus was great character interaction. The restaurant was gorgeous. The food was not our taste and as far a princess meals we much prefer...

1900 Park Fare the stepsisters were hilarious. They made the meal. The food was a basic buffet good but not great. I would do again because of the character interaction. Our favorite princess meal.

Chef Mickey's is a favorite for seeing traditional Disney characters. Basic buffet style food.

Les Cellier we thought was great steak but overated. Very small/crowded restaurant.

One of our favorite is Ohana, not on your list but thought I would mention it.

We just got back from Disney. Spoodles was awesome and a nice change from buffets. Everything was fresh and tasted homemade. The service was outstanding. It was the meal where my kids ate the best. They loved their soup and pizza and salad. My hubby had kebobs and I had the snapper. We were so full by the time dessert came.

Cape May was a good breakfast buffet but the characters didn't seem very enthused to be there. They were much friendler in the park. We won't go back.

Spoodles (Boardwalk, dinner) Awesome, tons of pics and review in my June link
-Captain's Grill (Yacht Club, dinner) Very very good, tons of pics and review in my April link
-Cape May Cafe (Beach Club, character breakfast) One of our favs, tons of pics in my April link
-Cape May Cafe (Beach Club, dinner) Loved it the first two times we went, it was eh the third time. We are going back next month
-Les Chefs de France (Epcot, dinner) Incredible, tons of pics in my April link
-1900 Park Fare (Grand Floridian, character breakfast) Went once, will not go back, way too loud and the food was awful
-Chef Mickey's (Contemporary, character dinner) Terrible, awful food
-Mama Melrose (DHS, dinner) It was just eh, nothing special
-Le Cellier (Epcot, dinner) Very good, loved our meal there

Thank you everyone! So far these seem like great choices for us. Here are Disney restaurants we loved when we were there in July:

-Biergarten (dinner)
-Crystal Palace (dinner)Didn't care for the dinner here, but really loved the breakfast
-Chef Mickey's (breakfast)Decent food- did it as a character dinner when the kids were younger
-Hollywood & Vine (breakfast)Don't care for this one at all. Been there 2 times for the Fantasmic pkg. That was the only reason we kept going back. Food not good, service terrible.
-1900 Park Fare (dinner)
-Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner)Our only visit here was just so-so
-Tangierine Cafe (lunch)
-Cosmic Ray's (lunch)

So from this you could judge more how our tastes are. We are generally pretty easy to please, not too picky. But we do enjoy good food!

Our favorite places:
LeCellier- a MUST
Whispering Canyon Cafe- kids loved this place
50's Prime Time- much, much better than H&V, and also kids loved it
O'hanas- great food and lovely atmosphere
Boma's- great for breakfast or dinner
Teppen Edo
California Grill

Here goes...

Spoodles - Tried it on our last visit with some friends, and we were pleasantly suprised, based on some of the reviews that we have read. I had the lamb...it was very good. Nice atmosphere, although a bit loud.
Cape May Cafe (Dinner) - Tried this last Christmas...I don't remember much about the food quality, but I can say that we all had a great time and I don't ever remember being so full in my life!
1900 Park Fare - Food quality is average to above average. Atmosphere is nice, but not memorable as other character breakfasts. We think that CHef Mickey's or Ohana are both better experiences.
Le Cellier - One of our favorite places to eat on property. Pretzel bread is fantastic. I still order the Chocolate "Moose" every time I go (and I'm 28). Yummy and fun.

Hope you have a great time!

We've been to:
Spoodles - Excellent..a "must do" every trip. Wonderful flat breads.
Chef de France - Excellent. Great food and desserts.
Captains Grille - Food was good, however, the manager was mean to guests, including us, and we didn't enjoy it because of his hissy fit..lol
Big River Grille - Good burgers.
Our favorite NOT on your list - Jiko's at AKL. Awesome food and super service! :woohoo:

Wow, thanks everyone! I just needed some input on some restaurants we want to try in the future. We bought a DVC membership at Boardwalk Villas, so we were specifically curious about the restaurants around that area. We will definitely be trying Spoodles dinner, Captain's Grille dinner, Cape May Cafe breakfast AND dinner, all on our next trip, provided they are all still there! Our next trip is not until summer 2010, but I was so curious since we just bought at BWV and I know we will be staying there from now on! The reason I was still curious about Chef Mickey's dinner is because we really enjoyed the breakfast there on the final morning of our trip in July. We thought a character breakfast was the perfect end to our magical vacation, just before hitting the road. Made it much less depressing to go to bed the night before, knowing we still had something Disney to look forward to in the morning. But since Cape May Cafe is just across the lake from BWV we are planning on doing that as our final character breakfast, because of the convenience. However, my older son loved Chef Mickey's so we thought it would be nice to give it a try for dinner one evening.

We're not all that big on doing so many character breakfasts. We're really more into having a quick breakfast in the room, then heading to the parks super early to be there well before rope drop. The only character breakfast we did on a park day in July was the one at DHS (Hollywood & Vine), but it was an hour before the park opened and perfect timing for rope drop when we were finished. That is the only way we would do a character breakfast on a park touring day, if it is before park opening. We can't bring ourselves to sit in a breakfast during the first hour of park opening, or even later in the morning, knowing we can be enjoying the attractions! We're early risers who enjoyed doing everything early in the day on our trip in July, and relaxing in the afternoon before heading to dinner! However, (getting back to the character breakfast thing), we will be spending 10 nights at WDW from now on, with only 5 or 6 park days, so we will have plenty of down days and maybe hit a resort for a character breakfast, which is why I had asked about the one at the Grand Floridian at 1900 Park Fare. We ate dinner there in July and loved the characters. I loved the food, DH said that although he liked what he ate, he liked it the least of all the dinners we had (he thought there was less variety than the rest...at least in the foods he prefers, but then again he is not really picky). DH loves Alice in Wonderland, and the kids love Winnie the Pooh so I thought that one may be really nice for us to do on one of our non-park days.

Of course, as I said, this is all speculation at this point since our next trip is far far away!! But, I always love to think ahead especially when it comes to vacations! And I can't help it...Disney research and planning makes me happy! ;)

Of those on your list, we've tried these:

Mama Melrose. This is one of DH's favorites, and we have enjoyed dinners there two years in a row. It's not exotic but is good.

1900 Park Faire breakfast. We had a nice breakfast there in August. The characters are fun, and the food was good.

Chef Mickey's dinner. We have had dinner here four times, the last three years in a row. I'm sorry to report it's being removed from our list because the food quality is not great. Though the characters are fun, the charm is gone for us because of the food really.

Les Chefs de France. We had lunch here this year, and we absolutely loved it. My DS said he wishes we could eat here everyday we're at WDW. Our server was very good, and the food was amazingly good. We'l be back.
