Okay I know I am old and lame and I use this word cause everyone uses it when they are excited in VMK. But what does woot mean? I have been wondering for the longest time. Maybe it is because I am old, or lame, live in a foreign country "eh" or I am just plain socially clueless. But I am pretty sure I am not only one. So I put aside all pride and humbly ask (please stop laughing) what does it mean. :confused3

Thank you for you kind, and sensitive replies. Boy am I in for it now. Oh well I think I have pretty thick skin. :rotfl:

Woot is like "Woohoo"

If I remember correctly (and now I'm aging myself ;) ) Arsenio Hall used to do the "Woot woot" thing with the arm rolling gesture.

Anyway, that's the origin and meaning :)

Does it come from the same dictionary as.....YOUT...You know Yout..What the heck is a yout...Fine never mind!!!

OMG I forgot about that!!! Thanks DisAeryn

oh god, i am going to REALLY date myself here. But actually the online term goes back to first person shooter games, and was actually an acronym for "we owned other team"

I can sense some of you may not buy that, so i looked it up on google. (gotta love google) lol

Word woot
Syllabification woot
Part of Speech interj.
Other Forms woo't, w00t, wewt, w007

Origin: is generally believed to have originated in Shooter games such as Doom, Quake, Tribes and old newsgroups.

Definition 1. Expressing extreme happiness towards someone's actions or upon oneself; used to express positive or optimistic feeling. "I got an A on my report card! Woot!"
2. An acronym in team-based gameplay, meaning: We Owned Other Team.

Seems in terms of vmk, and now pretty much everywhere, we are leaning more towards definition 1. ;)

Rofl!! I'd totally forgotten about that, Mike, and I grew up playing Doom and Hexen...

Of course, I also remember "Elf needs food badly!" and "Elf shot the food!" and that really ages me ;)

Well, if you really want to date yourself AND want to show what a nerd you are, explain XYZZY and PLUGH. Yes, I know what they are as I used them a lot when I was studying computers in college.

It is when your extremely happy and can't find a single word that expresses it, that is where woot comes in

Hehe... You are in a twisty maze of passages...

I spent many many hours very productively playing Colossal Caves )

Now, someone hand me my dentures and my walker. I need to go find a 300 baud modem and a BBS :)

WOOT! You are definitely an ancient nerd (and I mean that as a compliment!)!

KILL DRAGON

With what, your bare hands?

THROW BIRD

The bird is burned to a cinder.

KILL DRAGON

With what, your bare hands?

KILL DRAGON

With what, your bare hands?

YES

Congratulations, you just killed a dragon with your bare hands.

:rotfl2:

I just about died at that one! And I never won the game despite keeping carefully drawn maps.

Lol, I had to go and look this game up, I vaguely remember playing it. Actually it is the maps I remember...my friend had it at her house

Thanks for the meaning Mike!

I knew it was the same as WooHoo!!! but that is all I knew...now I do not feel so clueless!

Ok, this is how old I am. Anyone remember text adventure: Enter house: light match. House burns down! I think it was a mansion game. :sunny:

I just have to say.....I really HATE the word WOOT. I first heard it on a Lucid Dreaming forum I belong to and had to ask what it meant. For some reason it really bugs me...I am bugged by acronyms like "rotfl" and "LOL" too, but I find myself saying LOL all the time anyway, I guess just because it's fast and easy, and b/c I can't say "hahaha" on VMK. But I refuse to use "rofl" or "woot" no matter what. ROTFL...I find it hard to beleive that someone can be rolling on the floor and still typing at the same time. It's just one of my silly pet peeves, like when people say "PIN number" and "ATM machine"....(those are my SERIOUS pet peeves.....arggggg).

WOOT! I even hear someone wrote a cheer about it!

WOOT WOOT!

Wow, I've never heard of someone having this kind of pet peeve. It must drive you crazy when you're on VMK! :rotfl: Mine was always how r u? Lets not forget one that they can't use on VMK (thank goodness) and thats a/s/l
Whats really bad though is when you're in the middle of dinner and your kid wants to use the restroom and they excuse themselves by saying.. "brb"!
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

As much as I hate all of the shortcuts because they always show up in my student's writing, I have to admit to using them all the time now! :rotfl2: VMK makes it so hard to communicate sometimes and I am always worried that I will say the wrong thing and get slapped by the big white glove. :confused3

Ok now I will date myself, I use to play pong on Odyssey and Conan the Barbarian on a green screen Apple IIE! :rotfl:

I simply refuse to use "Woot", but I need to figure out a new way to express myself because I sound so old!! :earboy2:

Disney age is 8yrs old as quoted to me by Peter Pan himself!

Hey, did any of you ever solve the Babel Fish?

Hitchhiker's Guide and Larn were my text games ..
